Dr. Cooper is an internationally recognized health services researcher and medical educator at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. She has developed interventions that enhance patient-physician communication, improve health outcomes and reduce healthcare disparities. She is a 2007 recipient of the prestigious MacArthur Foundation "Genius" Award.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Thank you, Dr. Cooper, for sharing such a powerful, inspirational, and motivational talk on health equity, disparities, and racial discrimination. I am a Jamaican of African descent and as a student currently studying The Communities That Care Course at UOPeople, I am intrinsically motivated and moved by your speech to help others not only in my community but globally. Thanks again for sharing. It was a pleasure learning from you. Opal Pennycooke- Grant.

I disagree, as an ER nurse, we ask that triage question regarding drug use of everyone. We ask the abuse questions, we ask the depression/suicide risk screening. We didn't assume anything, it is our job to ask.

Bravo Dr. Cooper! How inspiring and sensitive you are to these important issues! I am so glad that we watched this in a grant writing seminar on CLAS standards and cultural competency for the Nonprofit where I work (we help people with disabilities live independently in the community. As disabled people, we are the largest minority in the world to be the last to get civil rights when the ADA was finally passed, 51% of us who work full time here aare disabled and can definitely relate to Culture INcompetency.) This is such a great TED talk. Too bad the racists and culturally INcompetent providers that need to watch this probably won't watch this!

Ya man I gotta say I don't get it. She sounds pretty biased, A LOT of assumptions were made by her. This feels dangerous to me. For instance when she said, "First of all, your probably wondering why I'm dressed like this," then launches into her identity... Well, no I wasn't wondering that. America is made up of every other country in the world, and it is our greatest strength. People wear whatever they like here...
