In the aftermath of Yolanda, Former President Rody Duterte made a promise to the people of Tacloban.
"While they were bringing back the pieces of their lives together, while they were trying to get back on their feet, just to lighten the atmosphere, I promised them na if one day, magkaroon ng piyesta dito sa Tacloban, babalik ako at sasamahan ko kayo."
On June 30, 2024 Tatay Digong fulfilled this promise. This is why he personally considers his most recent visit to Tacloban a significant event with a meaningful reason.
The people of Tacloban welcomed FPRRD with the same warmth and enthusiasm. It was like seeing the reunion of old friends. Right from the airport then to the Sto Niño Parish Church where he said his prayers for the country, people followed him with much joy and excitement.
He later joined his youngest son Davao City Mayor Sebastian "Baste" Duterte in a Maisug forum held simultaneously in the different cities all over the country and abroad.
"I am old and I think don't have enough time to fulfill this promise kaya nandito ako," Tatay Digong remarked.
Tacloban, you are so lucky to be loved so deeply by this man. He has a word of honor. He values his promises just as he values each one of you and every Filipino that he served for most of his life.
He promised to return. And on the last day of June 2024, he did so, remembering that sad and gloomy day on ground zero, Tacloban City, when a simple assurance from an old man gave a little hope to those who listened.
Someday, there will be a feast, and we will be together.
