Quick video showing the installation of an add a leaf in a 2015 Toyota Tacoma.
The Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro has a slightly lifted front and a lower rear suspension. This is great for blasting down the desert at high speed but I found it annoying when hauling my camping gear and motorcycle on camping trips.
This Kit by Rev Tech has the longest leaf you can fit without binding on the pack alignment brackets under flex. This will help with ride and keep the springs from sagging past the tip of the add a leaf, a common occurrence with short add a leafs.
Adding the leaf to the rear leveled the truck out and keeps the tuck from squatting when towing my boat and hauling my camping gear or bike. Total install time should be around an hour or so with proper tools.
I use motorcycle chain wax to lube the spring pack when re assembling to minimize squeaking and promote smooth action. The wax dries acting as a lubricant and rust inhibitor.

Chain wax, quick drying good for lots of uses: ALL LINKS REMOVED
A NOTE ON SAFETY, Your safety is your responsibility. Always use appropriate tools and safety gear, check your manual for procedures and torque specs ! The truck is supported out of frame by another jack stand behind the camera. For those thinking that i am relying on the jack to hold up the truck I am not. I do not intend to expire under a truck in my driveway. Be safe, when in doubt put another jack stand under the vehicle, its hard to call for help when you are crushed by your vehicle.

Overall great video of an install without having to remove the entire leaf pack as I've seen on other videos. Only a couple things I would improve on and that would be to put clamps on the outside of the leaf pack before disassembling so that they stay together, and I would also not completely lower the axle so that it's hanging from the parking brake cable. I really appreciate you making this video as I'm doing this on my own as well

ive seen so many videos while installing my lift. This guy's video was just amazing. - he did not show him disconnecting the strut, but that information was apparent... In other videos they cut crucial parts, or wave the camera so you cant see... ect, amazing, you could predict the video well too if you were just scouting for information, seeing as it's scaled to the project, including all steps. One hundred thumbs up. Tire choice A+ too.

Hey bud thanks for making this video. I'll be doing mine very soon and I wasn't quite sure regular C-clamps would get the job done right. I loved the "real world" style of your video. Some of the more professional shops putting out videos leave me with a little doubt that I can get everything done properly in the driveway. I have been fairly successful so far though and your video makes me feel better about this project. Carrying tools all the time makes this necessary for me. Sorry I didn't have anything mean or condescending to say like some of the other comments. I'll try harder next time. God bless and carry on.

I missed this D.... My son's Toyota has a very heavy set of springs that my older brother added when he owned the truck and we should take them out due to the VERY ROUGH ride when not hauling anything substantial... Good video as usual.. Figures that you can't stay out from under a truck! ;)

NO joke. I have a dirt driveway and found that putting down a tarp was super helpful when doing the valve cover gaskets on my 1st gen, any dropped fasteners were easy to find.

Great video. I just ordered a set for my 21 trd pro. 👀 by forward to putting them on. Just curious if it change the ride or if you needed to do anything else after installing them. Thanks for the great video👍🏻

The only real thing that I changed was to lower tire pressure to 30 from 35 and reset the TPMS sensor/monitor. The Pro suspension is a little stiffer and I found the ride a little obnoxious when not carrying a load on washboard and smaller bumps... other than that I lube the spring packs with chain wax about twice a year.

Well It would have gone smoother in my shop and not my driveway ha ha, but I think the only thing that I missed was not taking the E brake cable bolt loose before dropping the axle down. Its always a pain filming and trying to get a job done, normally takes me an hour to do a set of these. As for the springs they are still doing just fine, I regularly tow a 1500lb boat and I carry a motorcycle in the back a few times a year camping and they havn't started sagging yet. Hope that helps and good luck on yours !

Is it ok to use the same U-bolts? I'll be doing mine soon and have the extra leafs but didn't pick up new u-bolts
@Scablands_Scavenger
@Scablands_Scavenger 3 года назад
You should be fine as long as you don't damage them removing and torque them properly when you put them back on. There are lots of opinions on this, like anything else on the internet but I would guess more people have re-used U-bolts than have bought new.

So how much lift did you get out of the springs after they settled
@Scablands_Scavenger
@Scablands_Scavenger 4 года назад
I would say at least an inch+, the truck still sets fairly level. The main thing for me is when I load my bike in the back it does not bottom out on every little bump anymore. I am pretty happy with how well this worked out. In the past on other rigs I have used shorter add-a-leaf and "booster" springs that just caused the ends of the spring pack to bend. This is a pretty good solution until I can get a hd spring pack for the rear.

How long that height last?? Did it ever go back down to stock Height??
@Scablands_Scavenger
@Scablands_Scavenger 4 года назад
Well I havn't measured it lately, but it still sets level and dosn't sag in the back anymore. I regularly tow a 1500lb boat and haul a motorcyle camping from time to time and the suspension no longer bottoms out on the bump stops when going over large bumps.

I did this and it created an annoying squeaking in the springs... :(
@Scablands_Scavenger
@Scablands_Scavenger 4 года назад
That's a pretty common occurrence with leaf springs unfortunately. Luckily there are solutions. Squeaking is generally caused by the suspension working, inner leaf friction causes the individual springs to rub against each other, it can also be caused by worn out or dry leaf eye bushings, shock absorber bushings, or anti sway bar bushings. Normally it is the leaf springs. To try and eliminate the squeak raise the truck up (not by the axle) so that the suspension will droop and separate the leafs in the spring pack, check to make sure that the isolator pads are installed and in good shape, look for debris and rust and clean if necessary. Then apply a film of lubricant of some sorts, preferably something that dries so it will not attract and hold dirt to your springs accelerating wear. Personally I use motorcycle chain wax but silicone, lithium grease etc will work, apply liberally all friction faces of the spring. Allow the wax to dry and lower the suspension. You also want to make sure your leaves are parallel and that all fasteners are properly torqued. It is not uncommon to have to do this several times a year if you have a "squeaker" depending on your use and environment. In some cases a bent leaf pack can be the culprit ant the uneven pressure causes a squeak that is near impossible to get rid of without new springs. I had an old Jeep that I had to lube up every oil change, it really goes pretty quick and just becomes part of maintenance.

Hey man I’m doing a pro comp aal u have two questions. First should I take the overload out I want it to be level/tiny rake. I won’t be towing or anything. Second which direction do those metal pieces go in between the leafs does the skinny side go towards the front? Thanks!

Ha ha ha ha, thanks, it might look scary but there is really no cause for concern. The vehicle is safely supported and very little risk involved once you understand what components are weight bearing and which are not.
