Personally the trd pro exhaust did make the exhaust more noticeable and more throaty. It is a perfect sound for someone looking to have extra noise but not sound like garbage. Aka most aftermarket exhausts on a v6 tacoma. I can confirm its louder because the gf noticed and she never notices any modifications.
The main reason I put both the TRD CAI and exhaust on my Tacoma was because of the huge TRD sale back in 2019. I will say that it did enhance my pride of ownership if nothing else.
My 2022 toyota tacoma must be magic or something. Because after I dropped the cold air intake and installed the exhaust I gained 22bhp. Didn't notice mileage increasements. I had the truck dynoed at a friend's shop, he has a mustang dyno. I paid $1500.00 for the two and am very happy with what I spent. My truck has exactly 300bhp and 289 torque. You only notice it when you floor it though. So unless you get this set cheap is Say pass. The stock tacoma is quick. But not quite a rocket.
No no, see you’re not doing it right. Washing it does NOTHING to help you truck go faster. It just makes it look good. But waxing it, now there’s the secret sauce. I read on the internet it makes it fast and give you better mpg. It reduces wind drag which increases coefficients 😂
It use to think that too with in my old BMW 330 : i discovered it was just the cheap rubber mat sliding under the gas pedal🤦🏻♂️… it stop happening after I put weatherTechs 🤣
tune it, is the best way, and most cost per difference way to change the power or performance. Added an hp tuners with tune to my 2nd gen, and the difference for my $ is unbelievable! Then only after the tune start adding stuff like exhaust, CAI, etc.... this way you can retune for these added items to actually work.
Just bought a 4 runner TRD pro with the TRD exhaust. Wasn't expecting any more horsepower or fuel economy But they advertised it would sound a little better and it was made out of stainless steel from front to back. For me the stainless steel was a good selling point am I wrong about that?
My pro came with the trd cat back and my buddy has a OR without the exhaust and it's pretty easy to hear the difference lol. Performance wise might not make much difference but I have a real world, everyday comparison and there is definitely a difference in sound. Trd catback gives it a lower tone and under acceleration is VERY noticeable.
@@RobMotive why don't you just put a supercharger on it if you want to throw money for real performance. Because you most definitely will gain significant power for $6k. A Magnuson supercharger plus labor seems like better money spent then the $2k already in useful so called performance oriented parts that do very little. So you might as well do something that will would make a noticeable difference for once.....🥱
The TRD SPORT I just picked up last week had the TRD EXHAUST already installed. Previously had another TRD SPORT and my son has a TRD OFFROAD and both have factory exhaust. We can all tell you 100% there is a big difference with the TRD exhaust system as far as sound. Good tone, very little drone. We will have to disagree on this one my friend.
The TRD intake and exhaust paired with a OV tune is night and day difference in my opinion. I hate the way every aftermarket exhaust company sounds on this motor. The TRD is by far the most conservative aggressive toned set up. It's plenty of sound without the annoying droning and raspyness the others have. These motors sound like crap with after market sets ups no matter who it is after 2500k RPM.
just change out the airflow accelerator through the fender and the filter itself in the stock box ,and a muffler swap , all I did , lil higher air flow without breaking the bank muffler is quiet series 50 delta flow , Peter airflow over stock
No experience with the exhaust but did install the 57-9039 K&N Performance Air Intake System ($199). It's just a K&N filter and tube replacement. I agree with you. Not worth the $$. Not sure why I did it.
Just got an MBRP to replace my currently bent pipe. I see some comments saying to tune it first, would you recommend tuning my Tacoma after my new exhaust is installed?
I like the pro trd exhaust on my runner because I’m no longer pinching the rear tip departing ditches gully’s and such off road. That’s real world experience as my runner and where we wheel is such terrain.
Playing around with CAI's and my mustang, I really got nothing until I matched it up with a custom Tune. And I'm not really sure if the Tune wouldn't have resulted in the performance gain even without the CAI change. So I would say if you are really interested in a performance gain, invest in a Tune.
I don't know about the exhaust, but you can tell by looking at the intake that that's just for looks, you'd be better off with a DIY intake that you make yourself for $80 give or take.
Worse then that they will blame it on any type of engine failure if they want all depending on the dealer most won't give damn and just fix it. Also even if you put a TRD intake on instead it still would cause warranty issues unless installed by authorized Toyota dealer
Personally, I don’t consider it a waste but rather an expensive cosmetic mod/customization. Almost all mods can be considered a “waste of money” and like most, are mostly for aesthetic purposes. I agree, there are really 0 performance gains (see Toyota’s own HP and toque numbers for the Pro ... zero gains noted) but I’m happy with mine ... no regrets
Want more power and acceleration? I recommend a magnuson supercharger! Also, I love the MBRP. Got one for the Taco after hearing what it did for my wife's Fiesta ST.
apparently someone can’t hear very well lol the trd exhaust absolutely is deeper and throatier, and the combo of It and the trd intake is awesome. Love it.
Hey Rob, happy new year! I agree 100%. I added a CAI to my 2017 Taco over a year ago, expecting better performance and gas mileage, but it isn't there. Save your money folks and skip it.
I have probably the same setup...i knew that the TRD had the same set up as any stock CAI because it still has the dampening system...some ive heard have called it a resonator but anyway...i have an MBRP black performance series catback exhaust and just installed the S&B...love the sound...pushed in ECT and sounds even better but ive heard that the sensor is still set for stock airflow so it would need to be tuned to get it to recognize the setup to get the stated performance or make the throttle body more responsive...like using that ECT or Pedal Commander...i dont have PC, just using name as an example. Right now I am really happy with the setup..
Strangebas i had my tacoma for 6 months before i got both on sale. Installed and made a big difference in sound. Way loud growl. Also the cold air intake made a big difference in the pedal response. There is no delay. Now this is on a 2018 TRD Tacoma manual. Seriousky loud and much more prep and go. Automatics are horrible compared to the standard. Add a pedal commander didnt make any difference. Same as itvwas prior. However the top setting with pedal commander, slighly better. Any kther of the lower features reduce acceleration. Just make sure itsbinstalled correctly, and the cokd air intake actually has a good source of cokd air. If therevis no vents in the fender area to draw in outside air, you are getting nothing. And i mean good large vents.
Thanks for the advice, you just save me some cash. I was was going to get the cold air intake because I heard it helps with fuel economy but I think I’ll just live with what I got
Same thing with their Corolla hatchback right? How about the spoiler for corolla hatch? Useless too and just for cosmetics? Maybe just get spoiler to make my hatchback look more pretty and avoid the TRD Air Intake.
Rob, I like a man who tells it like it is!! TRD is CRAP. I installed a bigger throttle body. Upgraded the exhaust pipe from the 1st Cat to the rear with 3" piping(stock=2"). Noticed hp gain & improved drivability.
Better yet do a KandN drop in filter ($50). Remove the charcoal airbox after filter (free). Have a muffler shop install a generic free flow muffler ($200). Good to go!
@@RobMotive Sounds as good as any high dollar set up. I'm sure on a dyno these upgrades would show decent results however probably not enough to feel much behind the wheel. Perhaps if you were towing a heavy trailer you could notice a slite increase in performance.
Have TRD cold air intake and exhaust on a 2022 TRD OR. Love it. Sound is different, and not loud. No regrets. I wanted to go with OEM. Yes, it’s more expensive. And yes, as you said, it may be more about aesthetics. I love the aesthetics, and the sound. Of course, it’s a personal choice, and others may make other choices or flat-out disagree with mine. That’s fine. Love how Tacoma owners have so many options!
Rob, with a little effort you can cut and reshape the S&B box to allow for the 2nd hood strut. My friend says he wouldn't know if I hadn't told him it was modified. Wish I could include pictures here.
CAI is not about fuel economy but added horsepower. When you tow a trailer, the extra 5-15 hp makes a huge difference while trailering in mountain terrain. Fuel economy is a little better too, but not much. Thanks for the video.
Love the honesty in your vids and that you're not afraid to admit that you were wrong about the dual exhaust adding any noticeable horsepower or fuel efficiency. Keep up the great vids!
I did the K&N cold air intake and the trd exhaust. Works best when it's under 70 degrees. When it's 50-69 degrees and the air is cold and dense it picks up. When it hot out, not as much. It is alot louder for sure
Yeah I don't know why people put any exhaust on any V6 imo. I've never heard a V6 with an exhaust that I like. Oh and don't forget Toyota has a TRD drop in air filter that I would get, not for performance, but reusability.
awesome information, glad i found this this!! i'll spend my 400+ on something else!!,...thanks!! looking forward on better mods for my 2021 TRD sport 4x4 Taco!!
Rob why didn’t you get a turn down exhaust that doesn’t exit off the side of your truck? When you go off-road and kick up rocks it won’t hit your exhaust pipe.
Cold air intakes will not improve economy with a computer controlled injected system. It will slightly in a carburetor engine, but with a modern system, the sensors tell the computer the engine is getting more air so it maintains proper fuel trims by INCREASING FUEL. With a old carb engine that is jetted on the rich side, the new intake s increased airflow will help lean out an overly rich engine and make it more efficient.
Rob - Not here to debate the merits of CAI or TRD Exhaust...to each his own. However, your comment on not being able to improve gas milage and/or power is simply not accurate. Invest in a vF Tune or find someone in your area that does it. You have a lot money invested in that truck and can't believe you haven't taken the plunge and upgraded Toyota's horrendous factory tune, especially since you have an A/T. Point is, you are investing in a lot of cosmetic stuff, shell out a few hundred and get the vF Tune...you won't regret it. BTW: Love the Voodoo Blue. Have a 2021 on order!
Hey Rob, my "Intake Flow Accelerator" part along with pressing the "Tacoma ECT PWR Button" gives me the best performance. Now I do run an auto transmission in a very hilly area, but short of getting a supercharger that's really all you can do. The computer does the rest. Great video stay safe.
I installed bigger tires and bed rack with a RTT. Purchased a K&N air filter and it help a lil but still felt it hitting rpm’s higher. Decided to get the S&B air intake and saw a big difference. The rpm’s are lower and accelerated much better with more air gives less stress on engine. I purchased it to help with the added weight and it does. The sounds was a great bonus.
Let's not forget that you are based out of the US.In Montreal,Canada, the TRD Exhaust is 1462,16$ plus 15% tax. For me even 600$ US is an amazing deal. Lol. Aside from that, thanks for your honest opinion and other manufacturer recommendations!
Lol this is soooo true I've got all that plus the RIPP coils and pedal commander, gas milage is still horrible and the performance gain was minimal, still love my tacoma looking at installing the Harrod supercharger, I think I will make a vid of that. Keep up the great honest vids.
Happy New Year 🥳 Robmotive! Of course if you get a super loud muffler, you can barely hear the engine..... and super chargers are the worst. OEM parts are always better to start 2021 the right way with your Toyota Tacoma.
Hi Rob thanks for the video awesome my tundra came factory with the TRD exhaust. Curious if you’re cold air intake on in Tacoma is California legal? Also do you ever try sprint booster on your Tacoma makes it much more responsive? Hope the new year is starting out well for you and your family God bless
Hi Kevin, I also have the Air Flow Accelerator and a TRD air filter. I was running stock exhaust and wanting to preserve my warranty I just put on the TRD Pro exhaust. This opening up of the exhaust made a huge difference in performance and sound. In my opinion the stock exhaust was holding the engine back. Consider the TRD Pro exhaust upgrade.
I have a Gibson Black Elite exhaust on my Tacoma and really like it. Not obnoxious but of course you will notice some increased sound in the cab. I wouldn’t call it a drone though. Kept my stock exhaust just in case I get sick of it at some point.
Lol...most mods are made for better performance...gas mileage proably would be worse off because your putting your foot into it more to hear what ever it is YOU want to hear and feel the increase in performance?!? Air box and exhaust modifications are probably more noticeable at WOT.
Premium fuel isn’t going to increase fuel economy, the Tacoma is recommended to use 87 octane using lower octane may cause fuel economy loss and/ or damage, but higher octane is just a waste of money
@@RobMotive there's a computer that controls everything. How much air how much fuel how long do the intake and exhaust valves stay open ect.. unless you change the program in the computer its only going to let so much air in eve with the best cold air system and exhaust
