I watch your videos more than once and each time I pick up something new I missed previously. I.E. tying a knot in your timber cruising tape indicating the direction of original travel. I have a good memory but it's short at times! Great videos! -- Tom

Thank you for using the correct pronunciation of the words, orient and oriented. Not orientate or orientated. For the life of me I can't figure why people use the incorrect words. Just like preventative. It's preventive, not preventative. Ok, jumping off my high rise soapbox now. Outstanding subject matter. I learned some basic land nav in Basic NCO school in the National Guard but that was 35 years ago so I pretty much forgot a lot of it. Bravo Zulu.

@@STOKERMATIC Well, I'm not an expert at the King's English so I know how it goes with speaking. You do fine job. No communication problems. Years of military training teaches you to be clear and concise. I guess with words like orient and it's tenses people sometimes try and take the word orientation and use it to come up with the word orientate. Anywhoo, I like to know the proper pronunciation of words so I don't sound like a complete dumb ass. I have a hard enough time proof reading my comments to make sure I didn't leave out any words or used words twice.

I always ask - how will I get $X back from this thing? The return could be literally $$ or it could be time, enjoyment, proficiency, efficiency, etc. But, if there’s not ROI, it’s best to hold off. Just my 2 cents.

I have a pretty solid Signal/Navigation Kit in my Long Term Bug Out Bag, but I do need a Protractor and a decent pair of Binoculars. I too have a Fire Kit, Repair Kit, Water Purification Kit, Food Procurement Kit, Hygiene Kit, etc. Most of my kits are separated into Maxpedition/Condor MOLLE pouches or Sealine/Aqua Quest Drybags. It all goes into a USMC ILBE Main Pack. For the Headlamp, I would also suggest having a red light function for nonpermissive environments, it has less signature and saves your natural night vision. The flagging tape is genius. So many possibilities.

I really appreciate the Kestrel (I have the 3500): knowing what the wind is doing helps good decision making on e.g. route selection, and on the hills an altimeter makes pinpointing location much easier. I got it for mountain stuff which...hasn't been happening.

Very interesting. I had most of what you talked about except the weather and range equipment. At first I thought your range finder were binoculars, which I have. However thinking it over a range finder make a lot more sense. I still like my binoculars but I think I will have to look up a range finder and see what they run for. I considered the hand held weather but still have not gotten around to getting one. I liked the idea of the orange tape to help you. I can see it as a very good way of learning or disciplining yourself as a learning tool. In an actual event I think the idea of putting up orange tape would give the bad guys an unfair advantage over you. If you know what I mean. Tonight is the first time I can think of I heard you use the one is none and two is one idea. I have lived by that for some years now. It hasn't let me down yet.

Knot on tape for direction is very clever ! Is your range finder based on Lazer ? I've used optical rangers with various degrees of accuracy -- good enough for my shooting skill . Today I think up close and personal because of age . A young turd on RU-vid wrote me off because of physical impairment -- I would introduce him to more hurt than he can imagine and never be close . Sorry for the side trip , great post ! 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

Another excellent and instructing video from You! I would add even a GPS as a 'third' backup item. In case of emergency (or if you have lost the way) having an instrument that almost istantaneously tells you your coordinates may become a life-saver. I Also have a question: when you're in the field and find your azimuth and distance from your next objective, do you proceed in a straight line or do you try to follow terrain features, using them as a sort of guide (enabling you to know where you are without having ti constantly check your azimuth or Map)? Thank you in advance, greetings from Italy. R

More excellent content as we've come to expect on your channel! I like your comment response to Rawhide Adventures on looking at the ROI, especially for the rangefinder ($350 1/26/2022) and the weather meter ($554 to $944 1/26/2022). Surprised that your kit doesn't include an altimeter separate from the weather meter (2 is 1, 1 is 0 philosophy) and a GPS and/or phone navigation app. I'm looking forward to more.
@STOKERMATIC
@STOKERMATIC 2 года назад
TBH, If I have a map, I have an altimeter, so that's my redundancy. I do carry my phone and have a couple applications I use from time to time.
@jadenantal1652
@jadenantal1652 2 года назад
I've noticed the emphasis on altimeters in the comments and video, why is having altitude that important? I mean, theres already one pretty much on the map, is it important enough for me to spend the money on a separate unit?
@ssbfmcw
@ssbfmcw 2 года назад
@@jadenantal1652 Elevation adds a 3rd position descriptive element. Several tools are available to collect the information, ranging through topographic maps, altimeters and gps systems. Usefulness depends on why the elevation is required. If answering a question such as how is my progress to the summit or is this summit A or B, elevation data are valuable. If just hiking from A to B, elevation may not be that important.
