I am glad that you mentioned that this book is extremely difficult! My coach, when I was 1500 USCF, told me to pick this book up and the fact that it was well outside of my abilities became clear to me when I failed to find the correct idea (let alone get all the details) for the first 10 or so problems. I put the book down and went on to greener pastures like Vukovic's Art of Attack and Tal-Botvinnik 1960(Thank you Chess Dojo). Now at 1850~ I am revisiting Tactical Play and still finding it quite difficult, although I am finding the ideas in most positions, just not most of the details. That said I agree, this book is really not for at least sub-2000 players. I am going to try and plug away at it and see how far I can get before I give up but I don't feel so confident about it. It goes without saying, that coach didn't last long. Now that I mention it, I have a couple other books due to that coach which I will likely never read because of the difficultly of the books: "Positional Decision Making in Chess" - Gelfand, "Strategic Play" - Aagard. Both of those books I have heard placed at the " Don't touch till you're 2300" level. And 2300 is not a given for me. The likelihood that I may never be able to enjoy these books motivates me to hit the master level. LOL

So glad you've been enjoying your chess training since then 😃 Having a goal of understanding a certain level of book can sometimes be very motivating!

God get it! Don't let a bad coach recommendation discourage you!

The thumbnail is misleading. It gives the impression that Jesse doesn't like Tactics Time, Advanced Chess Tactics, and 1001 Chess Exercises for Advanced Club Players, yet Jesse doesn't say that in the video.

Jesse I can’t tell you how much I love that you made this review. “Here’s this dvorestsky book that’s incredible…you have to be 2300 FIDE minimum and the book is riddled with errors”. Ha sounds fantastic.

It's an "engaging" read for sure! haha

Yeah, I'm definitely going to try some of these! Then, have Dvoretsky tell me why my answer is wrong, in depth of enough, or I missed a key idea 😅 . And then have the silicon master tell me why Dverotsky is wrong 😅.

A totally entertaining video! I bought the John Nunn book at the time, thinking it would be great for a beginning club player. It's mind bending too!

The very first position in this book is just terrifying! You could analyse it for a month and still not know if you are winning or losing 😂

It's a bit of a curious book if it's only meant for less than 1% of chess players and 50% of it is wrong.

I thought some of Dvoretsky books was updated with computers? Anyone know anything about that?

I'm generally not interested in books on tactics that have errors, but this one is going to be an exception, assuming I get to 2300, which I won't.

Nice review, however at my level probably over my understanding at this time... Hopefully that will change... Getting a lot of value out of the Davorin Kuljasevic books which highlighted the areas to focus on to improve...

John Nunn Thought they ruined Secrerts of Gran master Play by adding Peter Griffiths comments.

Me seeing the title: "A dvoretsky book on calculation? Why haven't I heard about this before?" Jesse one minute in: "50% of this book is just wrong. The computer says no boss." "Ah that'll do it."
