The concept of the Tiger I tank has its origins in 1937, when studies were carried out on tanks heavier than the Panzer III and Panzer IV. These plans were frozen until in 1940 the French Char B1 heavy tanks captured during the invasion of France were analyzed, and it was decided to reactivate the German heavy tank program.
There were several setbacks in the process of choosing the models presented, the VK4501(P) from Porsche and the VK4501(H) from Henschel. Prototypes of the two tanks were built and the Henschel model was considered simpler to manufacture, with an order having been placed for 1,300 units.
