Tahr hunting with New Zealand Safaris on privately owned wilderness land. This old Bull Tahr has been seen for many years around the area, having 3 legs from what we think was a long range shot off another area he has come from he was given the nick name tripod. Tahr are incredibly tough animals living in extreme climates, very similar to a North American Mountain goat during the warmer months November-late April the Bull Tahr spend much of their time in heavy cover or up high in shaded cliffs feeding only in the cooler hours in the evenings until the weather changes in early May. Talking old trophy Bulls like this one is something New Zealand Safaris targets, at the end of their life span it ensures younger Bulls come through into these areas to breed keeping the genetics pure. Waiting and taking our time, setting up correctly for the shot and right position of the animal, using the ability and skill to stalk and an animal in open country is a skill few guides posses. Closer shots means great accuracy and their fatal shots like this one at 300 yards. With hides 3/4 inch thick and long coats means these animal are very well insulated and tough. As hunting in New Zealand Tahr has grown in numbers many both international and local hunters will go on government land where there is no regulation, with this very few will take a mature animal instead a young juvenile Bull. Management and value of these animals are become key now to the longevity of the Tahr population thanks to properties such as this one that value these animals and can co exist with sheep and cattle on the same mountains.
