According to legend, the first chapel was built in the Middle Ages with the name of São Cristóvão, patron saint of travelers and boatmen. Today, at the top of the Hermitage hill there is still a small chapel rebuilt in 1864 on one of the terraces of the hill in the middle of the vineyards. It would have succeeded a Roman temple dedicated to Hercules and, according to local tradition, the knight Henri-Gaspard of Sterimberg would have retired to the hill of Tegna (Tain l'Hermitage in antiquity) after returning from a crusade against the Albigenses, in the 13th century. He spent the rest of his life on its hillside cultivating his vines to offer them to pilgrims, hence the origin of the Hermitage vineyard. Inside, the altar is topped by a statue with the effigy of Saint Christopher, patron saint of travelers, recognizable by the baby Jesus he carries in his arms. The chapel is now owned by the Paul Jaboulet Aîné house.
