Taiwan Just Isn’t The Same Anymore

So many foreigners in Taiwan have told me how it's just not the same anymore. Taiwan has really straightened itself out in the last couple of years to because more of a developed country (yes I said country, lick a big one) and its quality of life has increased dramatically. Today I talk (with a massive hangover sorry) with Allen about some of the changes he's noticed.
Check out Allen's video where we try out some Taiwanese fruit and read some juice comments: • 酸民比台灣的水果酸嗎 SOUR HATERS...

Heyy come on! The nightlife in Taiwan is not about night club and drinking! It's having a late dinner in the night market, going prawn fishing for some snacks at 12am, singing in a local KTV until dawn, having a big breakfast at 四海豆漿, and finally calling it a day by watching local seniors exercising in the park peacefully.

I lived in Taichung 2009-2010. I left in May 2010 to move back to Canada and I think the fire was a couple months later. That was at Ala, a place we used to go to a couple times a month. Incredible cover band that used to play there every night. The nightlife was indeed amazing, but we were young, living in Asia so of course we were having a great time. My friends who I kept in contact with who were still living in Taichung said the entire nightlife scene shut down overnight. So unfortunate..

I had to double check that it was you typing this comment! Lol mm... to go to a night club is not a norm for most Taiwanese people, many people even criticise girls who go to night clubs as “愛玩“ which is not a good description. When I was in Uni at the time when you were in Taichung, lady’s night hold in a night club is a norm as not many girls like to go to night clubs as we saw it as somewhere complicated and bad. I remembered back in 2008, after 2 months of “work and travel” in America, my friends and I missed the fun dancing feeling in the night clubs in the US, we gathered in one of the night club again, when we were talking about it at the uni, my other classmates were giving us a look that I don’t know how to explain. Anyways, I think there are many good bands playing music in the coffee shop ‘文青‘ style is more popular and acceptable in Taiwan I think.

I just got back from my 2nd visit to Taiwan, and I'm in love with the country. I've lived in Vietnam for 3 and a half years and Taiwan is such a great change from the bullshit of Vietnam. It's great being able to walk around, not hearing car horns and getting hit by people driving on the pavement. Didn't even notice the air pollution, the air pollution in Hanoi is so shit.

Prozzie, I met a Czech engineer working on the coal fired power plants and he was saying that a lot of the older ones are being decommissioned due to their emissions of pollutants and their general lack of efficiency. New coal fired power stations are being built with far higher efficiency but also with new processes and systems to reduce pollutants to near zero. He did mention that the new coal fired stations do still emit CO2 (not a pollutant, it is a greenhouse gas - the terminology is clearly defined as pollutants have a direct health impact, CO2 has a direct environmental impact) but are nowhere near as bad as before. His view along with mine (I am a mech engineer too) is that modern nuclear power production is really the only way to go forward though as they are far, far more safer than they were many years ago when the original nuclear power plants were built (these days CAD/CAM/CAE plays a major part) and much more efficient, making more use of the fissile material - not withstanding the fact that it can all be reprocessed (mostly in the UK funnily enough.) A lot of city pollutants will come directly from traffic, and in Taipei's case Songshan Airport is smack bang in the middle of Taipei. The switch to electric scooters really can't come soon enough. Taxi's buses and cars need to at the very least switch over to hybrid.

If you want to learn proper English, get an authentic English man or woman with a degree in English from a reputable English Uni to teach you "the Queen's English" otherwise don't bother is my advice. Don't get your English taught to you by a Scottish, Irish, Yorkshire, Welsh, Scouser, East ender, etc. And definitely not by an Australian, New Zealander, American, Canadian or South-African. Wow .. Sooo much to talk/ comment about on your video. I was there 20 years ago, '99'-00, The English teachers I worked with at our cram school mostly tried to take the profession seriously, one was a grad Linguist student. I worked for a fairly reputable 'bushiban', Kojen English (ELSI-Taiwan, at the time). As for the Taiwanese that I hung out with ... most welcomed Westerners/USA/North Americans. They mostly spoke American English. They also wanted to favor the West to get on it's good side in case of any conflicts with 'Big Brother' (PRC). From what I've seen in return visits is that Taipei has just gotten to be a BIG International/ Expensive city ! I'd probably prefer Kaohsiung or Taichung or Hualien. I have plans to return the last Sat. of Oct. for a certain festival in Taipei ;-)

Prozzie, I just watched your other video about going to the US. It's interesting to learn that Canadians have such a stereotype about Americans. Now I know why some comments are shouting "People from the US are not the only 'AMERICANS'! They shouldn't call themselves Americans." Yes, there are lots of stupid people and smart people everywhere in any country. Americans happen to have a very loud, colorful, party style of life mostly. Canadians, according to your descriptions, have more like a Zen style of life. Being an Aisan myself, I have to tell you the bad news is most Asians probably think Canadians and Americans are the same. I hope you enjoy your trip to San Diego, a lovely lovely city. I love In-N-Out burger. Make sure you also try Shake Shack. Have fun!!

Please?! US are not the only Americans? Unlike Europeans, we generally refer to ourselves by our nationality in "the Americas". That would be a little awkward.

Keep Taiwan Taiwanese doesn't mean that you can't have cultural exchange. It means that Taiwanese must remain predominant because only they can express Taiwanese culture to the world; only one culture can maintain unity among peoples. We're well into a period of multiculturalism and to remain completely oblivious to the factious nature of having different groups of significant size, occupying a space, is incredibly shortsighted. Making appeals to the convenience of having that one random minority that's keen to delve into a culture they're foreign to, and assimilate, and subsequently find exchange with, is nonsensical. Multiculturalism is having that one random minority bringing a sizeable population that can effectively cordon off sections of an area, and designate them to be expressive of their culture and idiosyncrasies. It no longer becomes an exchange, but a political struggle to maintain the unique cultural expressions. You see this now in London. Now Denmark. Muslims are vying for a Sharia compliant state to maintain their cultural uniqueness - nothing to do with assimilation and equivalent exchange. Even if exchange were equivalent, then it's merely destructive to the home culture, rendering their ability to sustain themselves feeble. Multiculturalism that people clamor on about *has* to call for the yielding of foundations predicated on history and ancestry, all precedence, to a newly established minority; they have to have equal cultural importance, or you're a racist or whatever nonsense. Multiculturalism results in nothing but ethnic warfare. Groups will either fight to main their cultures or they will destroy their cultures. We'll either have ethnic conflict or turn into grey blobs, always seeking for the next fleeting exchange - always pursuing change for change's sake, and never finding anything meaningful and lasting. What a depressive existence people are trying to conjure up. To destroy a happily homogeneous country to experiment with a monochromatic, globalist religion of cultural death. You can have foreign people living in you country, but the amount must be controlled. Multiculturalism does not work - it is quite literally against the tribal nature of man. There must always be a predominant group to quell the urge of politicizing minority culture. And we already live in a rainbow - it's called Earth. Like a rainbow, there are clearly defined colors, and peripheral fluidity does not render these distinct colors fluid. You can have sprinkling of foreigners, but it doesn't mean we should now make countries indistinct and fluid.

okay, but what does 'keeping Taiwanese' mean? Does it mean aboriginal Taiwanese? Does it mean Chinese? Does it mean Japanese, who clearly have influenced Taiwan a lot? When I visited Taiwan it felt like a cool blend of China and Japan, taking some of the cool aspects of both cultures. Great countries and cultures are made by cherry taking the cool stuff from other cultures and ditching the crap. Cultures, like languages, always gradually evolve. After all, tradition is basically peer pressure from dead people. Having said all that, I agree with some of the points against multiculturalism, it's a nice idea that different cultures can live side by side, but in some cases authorities have tolerated terrible things (e.g. FGM, forced or incestuous marriages, honor killings, religious extremism) because they were scared to interfere in minority communities. London, NYC, Paris etc are successful multicultural cities because there are so many cultures that one never dominates, and they are special global cities which not every city can or should be.

The pollution is worst in the winter in Taichung. Last August it down-poured an hour a day then went sunny for about the whole month, so the whole month of August was pretty much clean air. Taiwan needs an offshore wind-farm, It's perfectly located to do so, although it would only be a little bit of power, it's clean, helps, restores coral and fish homes, seafood, food supply, and could be combined with gondolas to offer entertainment. Connect Penghu to Taichung by wind-farm and gondola, that would be sweet.

Cities tend to go through these cycles. If they have a great atmosphere for young people, it's a party place, and attracts many young people. Many decide to stay, and settle down and start families. Then they don't party as much and the character of the city changes, then it matures. Later a new generation grows up and it changes toward younger people again.

1) It's kind of cool/fun to watch this video and know exactly which street you are on, which neighborhood, etc. 2) I have noticed myself engaged in similar conversations over the last year or two; Basically, how fast Taiwan is changing and how much it has changed since I got here in 2013. 3) There are absolutely more foreigners here, now. It seems to have a negative impact on everyone (locals and foreigners). One example is that as there are more foreigners and thus more potential English teachers, the average wage for said English teachers has been dropping lower and lower every year and the general attitude toward them (and treatment of them) has become much more negative and neglectful. This kind of "I'm only going to pay you ________ and I am going to treat you like an unwanted, dimwit guest. If you don't like it, leave! There is a whole line of foreigners waiting to replace you".

Interesting video. As someone who has lived in Taiwan twice - first in 2011, and then again in 2016 - here is my view. The pollution was always really bad in Taiwan (those mopeds are one of the reasons), and the nightlife was already basically dead by the time I got there. What has really changed is people's view towards foreigners. On the whole Taiwanese people were always generally polite to foreigners in-person, but when I lived there in 2011, the first sentence I learnt in Chinese was 【你是美國人嗎】which means 'Are you an American?' People were much more likely to stare at me, and hold very superficial views towards me, from the silly - such as the idea that I must never have eaten rice before going to Asia - to the sometimes outright offensive (e.g. I must be an alcoholic despite being someone who does not drink). In 2016, there were still plenty of stereotypes about foreigners flying about, but they were less extreme (aka they were surprised I knew about Taiwanese food, as opposed to being amazed I had eaten rice before), and people would now ask 【你來自哪裡】which means 'where are you from?' as opposed to assuming I was an American. People were also much less likely to do things such as talk about me in Mandarin, assuming I would not understand. I think this change reflects the second biggest change, which is the kinds of foreigners that now live in Taiwan. When I was there in 2011, the majority of foreigners were young, mostly white and male, and went to Taiwan for a gap year. They were either at a University studying Mandarin, or working as an English teacher on the whole. However, by 2016, with the arrival major companies, such as Google, and many media companies moving their Asia HQs to Taiwan, the international community had become a bit more diverse on all metrics. There was also many more mature and professional foreigners, who were there for work rather than fun. From what you both said, it appears this increase in professionalism has even impacted the English teaching community, which is good to hear. I think this change really impacted how foreigners in Taiwan presented themselves, and Taiwanese people have often reacted to that.

Prozzie, I like your take on things, but you are WRONG about the DPP shutting down a "brand new nuclear power plant." Do some research about this. The battle over Nuke 4 goes way back and the final decision to give up on this money pit was made by the Ma administration (though yes the DPP--and not the KMT--are the ones attempting to eventually phase out nuclear power). Cheers, Guy

Haha you guys are funny, The Ma administration only shut it down because DPP use it against KMT so the government had to shut it down to calm people down. But then when Cai administration comes in the lie that they used against KMT starting to emerged and they can't hide the lie anymore, so they increase the usage rate on those coal power plant and the local government which is the Lin Chia Long administration gave out extra permits for more power plant to be built. So they can keep the power supplying to northern Taiwan. Instead they have to make up lies like clean coal tech or some shit to fool the Taiwanese people. People of Taichung health is at stake and they still chose to make up more lies, so they can still have advantages on the shutting down nuclear plants 4. So tell me, how is he wrong in this?

Taiwan is much better now than it was in the 1990s. I still remember when if you went to a club or bar you had to show ID. When I first came here it was also at the tail end when the Military Police would ask to check IDs of people. Smokes were 20NT a pack, back when I got here bribing the police was something that was done. The roads were terrible. But back whenI came here there was a much bigger foreign community, because at the time many major companies had their Asian offices in Taiwan. But in the last 12 or so years many have relocated to Shanghai and Beijing. Even in our office, we have been here since 1970. When I came here we had a staff of around 150 and 30 foreigners. Today we have 22 and 6 foreigners including myself. In 2025 when I retire as we have a mandatory retirement of 55 I have the job of closing our office here. Its only still going now, because I have been with the same organization since I was 16.

I've been to TW in 2016 and 2018/2019, and the way I described it to white people I knew in USA who lived there in the past, during the 80s, 90s or even the mid 2000s kinda had them scratching their heads asking if we went to the same country or not. I did see a lot lot more white people in 2018 and 2019 compared to 2016, though. Also due to the subsidies/promotion of it, imo the MRT seems more crowded in Taipei than 2016, though I could have had a fluke time in 2016. :/

Less shitty teachers is a good thing. The most night life stuff I do here is night market and hot pot. On the multicultural stuff, depends on the culture. Most Taiwanese I've met are open to be friends with Japanese, Koreans, Chinese, Westerners etc. but not Filipino and Indonesians (although that's a common trend throughout most of Asia). There's also a LOT of young people against gay marriage which as an early twenties American, I found pretty shocking. Been here for 2 years now and have loved every moment of it though. Also before anyone says anything, no I'm not an English teacher nor a student which on the experience side of things I think is beneficial as I'm not a part of the English teacher or student bubble whichs tends to throw a lot of foreigners perspectives out the wazoo.

Excuse to say that the previous DPP Taichung government has made a lot of improvements and the manifesto for green energy and cutting CO2 emission were very well written. What's worry me is the KMT which is more right wing does not have a clear vision for the future to cut emission. As a whole, pollution sources were not just generated from Taiwan but a big proportion of them came from China. Many countries suffer such this industrial pain including the Korean peninsula , Japan and Taiwan.

I believe the drink driving limit should be zero across the world then there is no confusion as to whether that “extra drink” will put one over the limit. Everyone is a different size and has a different metabolism plus there is whether one has eaten or not and other factors to consider. 🇬🇧🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

kind of unreasonable. alcohol stays in your system for quite a while. Even the next day after you've drunk something you can still have a small amount of alcohol in your blood. even if you eat food that's overdue it can start fermenting and you can get alcohol in your blood that way.

Actually, the statistics shows that the air pollution problem in Taichung is slowly improving each year, though only by a very small margin and still have a long way to go before it is considered to be clean (The air pollution still is and has always been terrible, but it is actually improving according to statistics). People in Taichung “feel” that it is getting worse may be the fact that the discussion for pollution has skyrocketed in the media over the years due to political interests. Both KMT and DPP used this issue to attack their political rivals.
