After checking out the Chiang Kai-Shek Park and Memorial, I had to head back to Taipei. But first, I wanted to check out the Daxi Old Street and see what it had to offer.
It was a typical market with a bunch of different local restaurants, a bunch of fruit and vegetable vendors, and small shops selling souvenirs. I didn't realize this at the time but the street was actually formed during the period of Japanese occupation (1895-1945). The shops are faced in Japanese baroque style with washed stone and are beautifully decorated with intricate carvings of birds, animals, flowers, and plants.
While there I ate some beef noodle soup at a local restaurant and then bought some delicious lychee from a street vendor who had an interesting story to tell.

This particular town is famous for the dehydrated tofu, or simply dried tofu. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dougan It's not anything funky like stinky tofu. It's dehydrated (but not fermented), just to enhance the flavor and textual. It's normally braised or marinated and can be cooked in many different ways.

From the price list on the wall, you can find that the bowl of noodles is plain noodles, not beef noodles! Litchi is 79 yuan per Taiwanese kilogram, and a bag of 100 yuan, obviously that bag of lychees is more than one Taiwanese kilogram! I don't know where you are now, so I would like to remind you that if you encounter heavy rain or difficulties, both the temple and the police station can ask for help! Take good care of yourself! Happy and safe travel! 👍😄🙌

At about 4:29, the shop lady greeted you with "Hello" and then asked you whether you would be interested in trying out their dried tofu. She apparently thought that you understood Mandarin since you responded with Mandarin. At 1130, the fruit vendor was saying that the NT79 price is for a Kilo of lichy not for the whole bundle which happend to weigh nearly 2 kilo. So she rounded down to NT100 even.

The lychee stand which they show you 「79$/1斤」 means one catty(about 600 grams) for 79 ntd. So they have to put that bag of lychees on the scales to know how much the weight, then they will tell you how much of that bag. Different bag of lychees has different prices.

Hi, nick and vanessa 1、You can buy all kinds of fruits in the local market, the price is cheaper than in tourist areas. 2、Fruit sales in Taiwan are priced by weight.( its like $79/斤, that's mean 600g=$79), that's boss sold you a bag of 荔枝 $100 cheaper than $79/600g(maybe), you gave her looked $100, she thought you wanted buy $100) 3、Many places only open on saturday sunday, you can search on google or google map. (my english is not perfect🥲)

That type of noodle is supposed to bland. The broth is most likely to be pork bone. This type of noodle shop is common for breakfast because you don't want heavy flavor in the morning. Also, they serves a long list of small dishes to go with the noodle and those dishes are where you get the additional flavor and textual for the meal. Those dishes includes many different cuts of pork and organs, sometimes even beef, seafood, smoked meat, sausages and some veggies. Maybe you expect something like spicy braised beef noodle soup or Japanese ramen, which are both much heavier than this type of noodle. One thing you can do though is do the dry one which is more flavorful. Other than the dishes, this type of shops often offer different types of noodle, as you can see, they had at least 5. This is one of the quintessential and simple Taiwanese comfort food. It's not something you will fall in love at first but it's something many Taiwanese craves when they just want a simple, healthy and light meal.
@NickKTravel

The fruit stands price signs showed $69 or $79 for 600g, not a kilo. The 600g is a traditional Chinese measurement 斤 the is still in use in Taiwan. In China, they have changed to 500g for easier calculation.

1:00 "泡菜" can be called pickles. "Kimchi" refers to specific Korean pickles and nothing else. But sometimes Google Translate does translate "泡菜(pickles)" into kimchi, because Mandarin is used to translating kimchi into "韓式泡菜(Korean pickles)", the abbreviation is "泡菜(pickles)", even though the Korean government has stipulated that it should be written as "辛奇" in Chinese character(漢字), but that doesn't work.

最後那個水果是「紅肉李」我也不喜歡,聽說要等熟透軟化才會好吃,但還是有些人偏好酸味!The last fruit is "Red Plum", which I don't like either. I heard that it will be delicious when it is ripe and softened, but some people still prefer sour taste!

Light flavor is better for health after all. Even though adding chilli sauce + soy sauce or vinegar produces stronger flavor that might cheat your taste buds, the sodium you had in that bowl of noodles, might already exceeds your daily maximum intake amount.
