Unreported World meets Taiwan’s ‘preppers’ determined to defend their country against a Chinese invasion. Krishnan Guru-Murthy follows civilians learning how to shoot weapons and save lives, as the Island prepares to protect its way of life.
Subscribe to our channel for more Unreported World episodes / unreportedworld .
Democratic Taiwan is living in limbo. The self-ruling island is viewed by China as a renegade province, and Beijing has vowed to unify by force if necessary. As Taiwan’s autonomy strengthens, the threat of war grows louder. But China’s military is twelve times that of Taiwan’s, and there is growing concern that Taipei isn't ready.
But not everyone thinks resistance is the wisest route to survival. On Taiwan's Kinmen Island, just 2 miles from mainland China, Guru-Murthy learns what happened the last time China’s mighty military attacked Taiwan's shores.

Taiwan government should be paying people to take training and sign up for reservist positions in all locations. Weapon and ammo caches should be in every neighborhood. Reservists should be allowed to buy kits to come equipped and ready to report at local stations

People can buy kits except guns. Reservists are getting paid by the tax payer's money to be officially trained by the Army. The problem is the content of the training just wasn't enough to meet the challenge of an invasion by PRC (CCP ruled China, the one recognized by the UN). That's why there are people invested in "self training" using their own money and time.

@@JamieLannyster i mean yeah police stations arent secret. But i for example wouldnt know what kind of weaponry my nearest police station has. Its just a small one, might literally just be an office where you can go and file a report and cops stop to have a coffee. Maybe they have 10 rifles there, maybe they have nothing other than 3 or 4 pistols and 3 mags each on the hips of the officers present. So its not clear to me at all that a police station would be an obvious place where i can just go and get warfighting type weaponry. So if that is part of taiwans plan, then they need to make sure people actually know that they can go to a police station, to not only get a semi or fully automatic rifle, but also at least 5 or more magazines for every rifle and enough ammo to fill them all.

Taiwan have force conscription. So even if they don’t have guns at home, everyone (as in people that have to be conscripted) know how to use a gun and is required to go back for training every few years after their conscription is over. Gun ownership is controversial because of cultural influences, not because they don’t know how to use a gun or fight. My uncle use to fly fighter jets and my dad use to drive destroyers when they were the ages of 18 to 22. During the years when KMT tried to suck up to China (early 2000s) they reduced conscription time from 4 years to 2 years. Then at the height of this sucking up they reduced further to only 1 year and eventually less. Now with tension escalating they are increasing it back up to one year.

All of which Taiwan lacks. Back in the days of Vietnam, CCP soldiers did not have the combat experience compare to Vietnam's over a decade experience in guerrilla warfare with a much more advanced adversary. Nowadays I'd say Taiwan lacks exactly the things you've said, while CCP has been studying NATO war efforts in the middle east for 2 decades and have grown more and more similar in terms of training. If you take a look at those CCP soldiers, their training and their standards, you realize CCP recruits much more motivated people highly brainwashed) compare to Taiwan when most people don't even wanna go to the military. CCP also studied US military education by providing better training and nutrition standards that fits the need of the battle instead of just teaching tactics. I think if Taiwan actually wanna have a chance, they need a much better budget, much more realistic and reliable program, and a much better recruiting scheme. Most of my Taiwanese civilian friends I've met back in college here in America don't want to serve but had no choice due to the mandatory draft, and with their average physical standards they absolutely are not gonna turn into war machines just by months long boot camp. Even with the most advanced tactics you're not gonna win a war if your men can't even do a 10 mile ruck within standards, in Vietnam they did not had the training program so whoever fit survives, that's basically still a 'selection program'. Taiwan just tells every military aged male to serve while they live in a perfectly developed and civilized society are nowhere near Vietnam's selection brutality. If the war happens tomorrow, unless any NATO country interferes, Taiwan will fall just a matter of days or weeks, simple as that.

In the past PRC couldn't afford a proper amphibious invasion to the level of the US nor overly-sophisticated air defenses, so the old strategy was that the ROCAF, despite US efforts to neuter them during the Cold War, would immediately mobilize and strike PLA staging areas on Mainland China, ending the war quickly. Of course that's likely not happening now. Thanks, USA. There are also concerns that some of the preppers would instead be interchangeable with rioters in the event of a war. Contrary to mainstream belief outside of Taiwan, a bigger segment of Taiwanese population has anti-ROC sentiment, who consider any war across Taiwan Strait as none of their business despite living on the island, than that with pro-PRC one.

People in America who are prepared in case of a war are also prepared for pretty much any natural or man made disasters. They are only seen as eccentric by people who have been told to see them that way by the media, which has become the propaganda arm of a certain political party. It's better to be prepared and never need to use those skills than to need those skills and not have them. Ask anyone who went through the power outage in Texas a few years ago. A skill that can save one's self and others should not be seen as "eccentric" or unnecessary.

You'd think a nation that is constantly worried about being invaded might let their citizens own weapons. Seems to be the first right nations hand out when they get invaded recently... I don't think a lot of people understand how incredible of a deterrent it is when your populations maintain their own weaponry. The thought of an invading military trying to contend with the American armed population is what gives military powers nightmares. It's also why the Japanese knew they could never actually occupy or invade mainland US. I know the Chinese are making you feel like you will fail, or die for your country, and they want you to feel like you can't win. And understand, perhaps you won't... so be it. There is a line at which you cannot yield. There is nothing so precious that it isn't worth the damage it will sustain to protect it. The general concensus of the Taiwanese, which hold true for the entire East Asian region (China, Japan, Korea), because of their Confucious-influenced collectivist mindset, It's not a matter of complacency but in the belief that civilian ownership of firearms will disrupt public safety due to its potential misuse. In other words, their government (as well as the civilians) don't trust their average Joe with firearms. The recent occurrences of "mass shootings" and other gun related crimes in America proved their point. I obviously disagree with that kind of sheeples mindset, but that's how they feel. I even had a chat with a local Olympic Shooting coach while I was there and she share her sentiment that Firearms must be heavily regulated and civilian MUST not have any access to them, no matter the cost. The distribution of comments below mostly focuses on firearms handling and ownership. This same problem also manifests in many US prepper online discussions. Guns, other weapons, and direct violent/kinetic action are high profile, glamorous b/c of movies, and relatively familiar to many noncombatants b/c of movies and video games. But as Jo and the army captain spent most of their segments discussing, govt/emergency services and other infrastructure will be overwhelmed in the case of invasion. Any effort that civilians and noncombatants can contribute here will free up the more current and equipped military personnel to do their jobs more freely. Just as any modern military is only constituted of 10% combat soldiers, so too 90% or more of an invasion scenario will involve search and rescue, emergency response, logistics, and other noncombat needs. Just look at any Ukrainian fundraising event -- the quantity of medical supplies (both first aid and more extensive medical/surgical needs), water, fuel, electronics, power generators, vehicles, clothing, etc dwarfs the military component. That's not to say that one replaces the other -- the need for military supplies and hardware is also immense: weapons, uniforms, vests, helmets, night/thermal vision, drones, etc. Through distorted frequency bias, many people get the impression that guns and bullets make up 90% of what's needed, however. In a given year of hypothetical conflict, the 5-30 minutes a prepper might spend actually getting shot at will be the most critical minutes of their life. But then there are also the 360+ days of the year when all the other aspects of survival take precedence. Or to put it in a personal prepper context, at the very least one individual cannot stay on alert and man every watch every day forever. Over any time horizon longer than a few days, teamwork and sharing a distributed set of numerous noncombat skills is essential to survival -- i.e. building a community.

That small portion of time in which combat is necessary is the most important time, without weapons and combat first there’s nothing left. Ukraine’s disarmed population being disarmed probably caused a lot more casualties than if they were armed and they have a small, weak military. The USA doesn’t have those problems and civilians can easily get the resources/supplies needed if we were attacked

There was an experiment of something similar in America. I can't remember the details exactly, but I think it was on T-Rex Arms channel. A guy trained with airsoft replicas (rifle, pistol) in his country where he could not own firearms. He came over to the States and shot the real weapons and did remarkably well except for some minor issues to work out given the differences in functionality between airsoft and real cycling bolt carrier groups. What Taiwan is doing is valuable and a lot of it will carry over if things get dire. If they do need to pickup real weapons, they'll just need a little bit of training to finish it off which is better than starting from nothing.

Basic trauma care is essential. Sometimes the ambulance just cant get there soon enough. Learning how to prolong life is necessary. From turning someone on their side when there is a seizure, to pinching/closing bleeding arteries or using tourniquets to preserve buy as much time. Trauma kits are better than first aid kits and you only see their value when you lose someone important. Upgrading first aid kits with basic tourniquets, butterfly bandages, basic suture kits can mean life or death.

If they do get a video game loot box..I bet 90% of them will drop their mag and hear a click with no bang. And if they get a round off they may produce a jam they have no experience in fixing when they are off target from recoil and stance...if I could talk to them they should prep more than fight..if they want to defend they need to pick up a real gun like they did in Ukraine before their invasion.

I know i may not last very long. But i have served 6 years in the military. Received extra training for convoy security with 2 deployments to Afghanistan. I can help those that received no training become proficient and there are millions of other in my nation that are able to do the same. We can make life of invading soldiers very dangerous and miserable. Yes mass shootings commited by psychopaths are tragic but are rare considering the number of guns in the hands of the people. Its not a fear that normal people have here. Its hard for other nations to comprehend. But modern day examples like Ukraine and Israel show that common citizens should be armed and are a rapid response force and deterrent to aggression. Private gun ownership in Taiwan needs to happen. World wide the common citizen should be armed with sufficient weaponry to keep themselves safe from tyranny and foreign enemies. Train hard and often Taiwan. I support you

It's absolutely insane to see these people so dedicated to defending their country and not being able to do the most basic training with actual guns. Yes if you have extensive training with airsoft 1:1 copies you will know how to maneuver a gun, but not how to anticipate recoil, not to flinch when shooting, how to actually adjust for distances and so on. The idea that (Communist) China has never invaded or fought other countries is simply not true. China invaded Vietnam in 1979. In 1969, Chinese troops were involved in a series of border clashes with Soviet soldiers. Outside observers, including the United States, wondered whether these clashes would escalate into a nuclear confrontation; thankfully, that didn’t happen. In the past few years, Chinese soldiers have been involved in multiple border clashes with soldiers from India. And of course, let’s not forget that large numbers of Chinese “volunteers” fought against South Korean and American soldiers during the Korean War.

If you can do both you will be an asset to whoever your around. You will be able to attack, defend, then save those around you. This is the most important skill to have. It makes you constantly think about the aggressivenes/defense and that will save you and the ones around you and be vocal about when they're being to aggressive. It takes patience to hunt and eliminate the target. However some around you will get themselves in trouble and that's when it takes your skill to dig them out of a nasty situation. The best defense is a good offense. I commend you from Texas. I wish I could show you a few tricks. Also .68 caliber paintballs slap the crap outa you. The media keeps refering to the massive size of the Chinese army, but unless they're all excellent swimmers, it's not going to help. The only way China can ferry troops over the Taiwan Strait is by ship or helicopter, both of which can be taken out by small anti-tank or anti-aircraft shoulder-fired weapons fired by two guys hiding in a shed somewhere. And with the number of acceptable amphibious landing sites being limited in Taiwan, once the approaches to these select beaches or ports are clogged up with sunken landing craft, the rests will be stuck out at sea, waiting to be sunk!

The Taiwanese are being realistic. When it comes down to it, you've only got yourself to look to. Keep prepping guys.
