Caroline & Gabriele compare two Taiwanese oolongs made with the same cultivar, from the same year: Dong Ding & Ali Shan. Each comes from a different (eponymous) mountain in Nantou, Taiwan, and one is more roasted than the other, making this an ideal horizontal tasting to compare how terroir and processing affect the flavour, and what teas of the same cultivar have in common.

The way y’all described the texture of the Ali Shan perfectly sums up what I love about Ali Shan. Mmm the florals too

I can't say I like one over the other only that good quality versions of these two teas are some of the best teas in the world. Jewels in Taiwan's crown for sure.

the steps which seem casual are a bit much just to get a cup of tea,,,,, 1 oz pkg now $10 and up make it much more than coffee which may be only $1-2.50 per ounce. Some alishan come with branches and stems = unfair shame. some strive for just leaves. I just make it in a decent amount 12 oz+ add 12 - 16 + pellets and dilute till taste>otherwise a guess per batch. Not all the same flavor at all. Love the good batches but never known till you brew it. What was life before a weight scale.

Hi Stefan, when I read "sweet oolong" in your message I instantly thought at Jin Mudan (www.nannuoshan.org/products/jin-mudan). Find a nutty Oolong is a more of a difficult task. I would look at Dancong, by exclusion at least. Here two candidates: www.nannuoshan.org/products/xingren-xiang nannuoshan.org/products/bai-ye-bouquet Dong Ding as well as other rolled oolong with a medium level of oxidation and/or roasting might also be good choices.

Can I find good quality oolong tea from Taiwan,.......on Amazon? What are the signs of a good quality tea companies? What should be the the correct price? I have seen tea very $13_-$75. cheap and tea very expensive, I need a good name of a companie

Answer in short: most likely, not. Amazon imposes strong restrictions on the type of products that can be sold and, unless someone finds a way to go around the rule, it is not possible to sell farmer tea on Amazon. So you can find there only mass production teas, i.e. nothing good. If you are searching high quality tea, I would rather search for specialty tea shops. There are quite a few nowadays and also forum online to get good advices. E.g. reddit or Facebook groups.

dongding oolong is my favorite taiwanese tea. did a side to side taste testing with alishan and jin xuan, and the aftertaste of dongding stood out the most. kinda reminds me of wuyi yancha but with a unique taste all of its own

Totally agreed. If Dong Ding is traditionally picked and processed, it is one of the best teas on Earth. Thank you Daniel for sharing!
