Director: Michael Lindsay-Hogg
Executive Producer: Sandy Lieberson
Producer: Robin Klein
Taj Mahal performing "Ain't That A Lot Of Love" from The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus
Recorded before a live audience in London in 1968, The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus was originally conceived as a BBC-TV special. Directed by Michael Lindsay-Hogg, it centers on the original line up of The Rolling Stones -- Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Brian Jones, Charlie Watts, Bill Wyman (with Nicky Hopkins and Rocky Dijon) -- who serves as both the show’s hosts and featured attraction. For the first time in front of an audience, “The World’s Greatest Rock and Roll Band” performs six Stones classics. The program also includes extraordinary performances by The Who, Jethro Tull, Taj Mahal, Marianne Faithfull, Yoko Ono, and The Dirty Mac. A ‘supergroup’ before the term had even been coined, the band was comprised of Eric Clapton (lead guitar), Keith Richards (bass), Mitch Mitchell of The Jimi Hendrix Experience (drums), and John Lennon on guitar and vocals.

The thing I loved about the Rollings Stone's Rock and Roll Circus is that it featured some of the biggest names at the time and everybody played their hearts out. This perfomance by Taj Mahal (featuring Jeese Ed Davis) is no exception.

@@paullevine1813 Don't forget the legendary Who performance of "A Quick One While He's Away." It is rumored in some circles that that's the particular performance the made the Stones sit on the Circus for so many years. Another (relatively credible) story: that it was 72 consecutive hours of chemically-supported production work and ego/talent wrangling that had the Stones too flat to outdo their supporting cast by the time they got on stage to close the show.

No surprise Jesse Ed Davis would later be hired by George Harrison to play lead guitar at the Concert for Bangladesh when it was unclear until the very last minute if Eric Clapton would show up. (The Concert for Bangladesh took place at MSG in New York City on August 1st, 1971, roughly 3 years after the Rolling Stones Rock & Roll Circus had been recorded.)

All great bands start with dyno-mite rhythm section. Chuck and Gary = primo! Totally! Locked! Essential! Jesse Ed ranks in my top 5, err top 4,....err top three favorite guitarists, um maybe top two! Touch, sweetness, tone, lyrical lines, rockin', country touches, and horn lines! craftmanship!....I could go on. And all done with straight face & body, no extraneous movement, no show, no guitar face. All the beauty, all the music comes out of his fingers. All his musical energy comes out his hands. And Taj! What else is there to say about the Taj? His energy, his groovy soulful tunes, such a wide variety of those tunes charisma etc. Master!!!! Oh! Did I mention the guitarist in this fantastic combo? One of the best ever musical combos. Guess I did. Can't say enough. Sorely missed......

Had to go out the next day and buy me a Taj Mahal album! The Who performances was great as well. I think that is why the Stones didnt release it at the time. They were rusty as a live band and had not toured at this point in nearly two years due to management issues and drug busts and it showed.

It would be 100 times better with his own amp set-up. But it really is all in his hands and heart.

He still is killing it. Check out Taj Mahal and Keb Mo Paste Studios Sessions on RU-vid. Just two guys, two voices, two acoustic guitars and a harmonica just tearing the place down. Cheers

I saw Taj & these band members in 1969. I took some friends & told them they wouldn’t believe how good they were & my friends just loved it. They were great & still sound fresh. 💕🎸🎤

One of the most incandescent live performances I know of. The whole show was, but Taj Mahal stole it for me.

Gran colaboración de Jess Ed Davis con su slide de guitarra en el precioso album "Walls And Bridges" (1974) de John Lennon.

This is such a freaking good video. I know why they shot it so tight ( they were first, so not many fans in the wide shots), but the closeness made it feel so right. Damn, wish Jess Ed could have seen this...
