Tajo del Molino and Cueva de las Palomas - TEBA
El Tajo del Molino is a slightly curved gorge. Caves and cavities abound in the canyon, just over 3 km away. From Teba is this extraordinary limestone canyon that is also known by the Tebeños as Tajo de Torró. The gorge was formed during the emergence of the limestone seabed during the Jurassic. Afterwards, the action of water and mainly the Río de la Venta that runs through it led to the phenomenon of karstification, resulting in an abundance of caves and cavities in this area. The most important of them is the Cueva de las Palomas.
The existing flora and fauna are of great interest. Large birds of prey such as the griffon vulture, Egyptian vultures, as well as nocturnal birds of prey as well as bats that live in caves can be seen. Above all, the presence of the mountain goats that come to the gorge in summer to drink stands out. As flora we find palm hearts, rosemary, asparagus, wild olive trees, orchids...
At the bottom of the Tagus is a ruined mill through which water entered and, when falling on the mill's own machinery, moved the turbines that allowed the grain to be ground. The presence of mill wheels confirms this fact as well as the origin of its name.
On the way back we passed through the Sima and the Cueva de las Palomas, which we found both closed and fenced.
