This is an update and some thoughts on the Takacat 260lx I purchased as the tender/dinghy for the boat. I have had the Takacat in use for about four months at this stage and It includes the outboard motor upgrade to 6hp from 2.5hp.

Good video mate. I was looking closely at a Takacat last year as well, seems like a great little boat. Decided in the end to go for a RIB with alu hull as I'm in the coral all the time.

I do intend to end up where there is coral, I just have limited deck space for a RIB. I was planning on getting a larger Hyperlon version of what I have. If I'm careful do you think I will be okay? or do you think I should try and find away to get a RIB on board?

I have a 340lx with 15 (18 apparently)hp Suzuki and all the add-ons including a Garmin plotter/finder. i use the std prop and fitted a SE200 Hydrofoil (it's big). Happy for the most part but back spray past 3/4 throttle is to much. Otherwise it fly's. The thing that impressed me most is you actually pronounce 'Takacat' correctly. Named after Takapuna Beach where designer spent his youth apparently. Cheers.

Nice setup!! I think the 340 with a Suzuki 15hp in hindsight is the setup I should have gone with and may still do so in the future. Although I might try cupping the prop only and no hydrofoil next time. Cheers.

I've got the 340 with 15hp and the boats amazing had my setup for 4 years. We get just under 20 knots. I've had a rocket launcher made with x4 rod holders and it's ideal for fishing. Best $5k I've spend and that was a new motor and boat. I would recommend it to anyone. I'm still trying to sort cavitation, but it's not a big deal.

I would definitely go bigger if you can. The longer water line is easier to plane and they pack down to a similar size.

If you turn the wheels around they position wider and more under the boat, so not in the way of the engine :)
@madogblue
@madogblue 4 года назад
Hi. Great video. What did you find out about the cavitation?
@ryan-w
@ryan-w 4 года назад
Its actually ventilation. A normal dinghy transom pushes water down to the prop. These cats don't do this so air can enter t0eh water column and if it gets close to the prop is causes the boat to slow a bit and revs increase. The cupped prop shape I think helps the most and the permatrim corrects the last small amount of the issue.
@alexstubbins6298
@alexstubbins6298 2 года назад
Great vid have you tried a hydrofoil they don't mess the water up round the shaft as much and introduces less air. ....put that engine kill chord on your wrist you naughty boy ha 😏
@ryan-w
@ryan-w 2 года назад
Hi Alex...yep total agree kill cord should have been on the wrist!! You are the first person to notice! I used a permatrim, which is a very popular type of hydro foil and you will see that in some of the next videos, and it was part of the final solution for making this setup work.

I like the wheels on the back there, easy transportation. Is there a place to hold the engine when you use those?
@ryan-w
@ryan-w 5 лет назад
The engine can stay on the transom as normal with the wheels down. A short shaft outboard won't reach the ground with the wheels down or if you what you can raise the outboard.

What speed you getting with the 6 at half throttle?
@ryan-w

With my set up as detailed in the videos...Top speed in ideal conditions and at full throttle was 16 knots...Plaining but at the lowest speed was close too 6knots with the 2.6 metre takacat...half throttle was in between and very dependant on conditions...can not give a definitive number.

I am having the same issue (ventilation/cavitation) with my Truekit 3.3. Really disappointing. Apparently I need to buy a permatrim foil and or aftermarket propeller.
@ryan-w

I think it is an issue with most cat dinghys. Permatrim will definitely help. I have a video on that if you look through the play list.

Great video, I have a Takacat 260 with a 3hp Evinrude which I am about to swap for a higher HP Suzuki 4 stroke (weighs less than Honda) so your comments on cavitation were interesting. I too live in Whangarei and am interested to find out measurements with the trim plate as I need to store it upright in my motorhome. Perhaps send me a reply so we can make contact.
