It’s crazy to think that an animal the everyone thought was gone out of existence, was still alive, and is living free and happy in the wild. Thank you guys, and thank you to all the scientists who re-discovered them.
Makes me think my mom's theory about certain extinct species is correct - that they aren't completely gone, just that a few who are left are hiding somewhere safe.
I saw one at a small reserve in New Zealand. I specifically wanted to see them, having a deep love of New Zealands birds. They are very beautiful and much bigger then I'd imagined
These birds really do look prehistoric. As an avid avian dinosaur (bird) lover it would be incredible to visit NZ and have chance to see all these unique avian species (I’m from the UK more specifically England). Hopefully they will continue to exist for years to come thanks to your work!
A wonderful film, and a great story. We met some of the Takahe team on the Heaphy Track a few weeks ago - good to see them hard at work (travelling on their mountain bikes, too!). And we were beyond thrilled to see one bird waddling down the track on the approach to Mackay. Love your work, DOC!
I know a story about the first real efforts to bring Takahe back for the first captive breeding efforts. The full story was written down by Gerald Durrell, the founder of the Jersey Zoo, in the 1950's. He was told it by some of the people involved, and if you want the details, it's to be found in Mr Durrell's book 'Two in the Bush'. The venture was fraught with difficulty, not least of which was how to get some birds for the programme out of their remote location. They decided that capturing live birds was out of the question, so concentrated on getting eggs and having them hatched out by broody chickens. Given that the chickens would be subjected to an extremely rough journey, these chickens needed to be determined to stay on their eggs no matter what. They chose some birds and began subjecting them to various conditions, growing in violence until, at the end of this 'brain-washing' process, just three hens were left sitting stubbornly on their clutches of eggs. According to Mr Durrell, one of these three was chosen simply because during this 'training', she, in her box with a clutch of eggs, was put on a car roof and forgotten about, to be knocked off the roof by a low hanging branch and sent tumbling along the road for a good number of metres. This chicken must have been made of steel because she did not only not abandon her nest and eggs, but also survived the accident apparently uninjured, and every single one of her eggs not even cracked. To keep this short, they did succeed in getting some Takahe eggs, and they duly hatched, but because so little was known about the birds, no-one knew what kind of parental care they would get. The programme conservationists worked this issue out, too. That there are Takahe still living is a credit to those conservationinsts, and all who followed their steps.
Mankind can do truly remarkable things, it's a shame we don't all think and care like these guys😢 so many more species lost but so many more can be saved, the time to think about the future of other species and our own is now! Otherwise all will be lost. You guys are awesome ❤
Having beem to NZ and Fjordland, i feel that somewhere in one of those valleys, there might still be Moa. Not necessarily the giant ones but smaller types. They rediscovered Takahe and Kakapoe, so a brush Moa might be somewhere out there 🤞🏼
