Takara Tomy MP-44S Masterpiece Optimus Prime Review. Comparisons with MP-44 Prime

I have been thinking about buying the MP 44S for the past few days because I am afraid that the joint loosening problem of the previous MP 44 will continue to occur. I look forward for TakaraTomy to re-use the MP-44 G1 Optimus Prime mold and make it into a Masterpiece G1 toy Ultra Magnus (aka White Optimus Prime)! That would be cool.

This is a fantastic looking figure, If the price tag wasn't 289.99$ in Canada I would have considered buying it. It's a good idea to do this color scheme on MP-44, I like it. Great review as always!

I might need to let you guys know a bit info on the MP-44s. 1. This is an upgrade from the mp-44 for sure, being the knees fix but... 2. They removed the tab securing near side tanks in alt mode. 3. They used more flathead pins instead of screws. Harder to fix if theres an issue that requires removing. Looks premium thou. 4. Some will have the left chest window frame bigger thus putting more stress on the hinge, you can see in this video aswell. 5. Nub marks are everywheres, most obvious on the tighs. 6. The shoulders has a rachet design that will fail. You will notice the clicks becoming softer. Think its the same with mp-44. So thats whats i can say based on the mp-44s that i have. Its not a deal breaker, still a solid figure. Btw I fixed mine, only the shoulders I had to purchase a used KO prime v3 to swap the shoulder rachets parts being a better design.

Oh man, I'm interested to hear what you have to say about MP-44 and MP-44S as it's definitely one of "those" transformations. Thanks for the comparison video! I think the looseness on your original MP-44 can be fixed by tightening some screws. Mine was lucky enough to have solid legs out of the box but I've fixed other MP-style joint tightness issues that way.

Thanks for this review. I was thinking of getting this but the fact they didn't even tampo the stickers, and gave a sticker sheet instead is so cheap! NewAge toy deco version is how it should be done.

Why didn't they paint the eyes yellow on the toy style head...?

For the price they charge they should have molded in and painted the details on the toes and shins. A couple of little extra parts surely wouldn't have sent them broke

Thanks for the thorough comparison! I really really appreciate it. I like them both very much, but I slightly prefer the cartoon version. Having said that, I would take either one of them over my MP-01. I thought he was cool when I got him, but his bot mode definitely differs from his animation model. In particular, having the wheels out on his legs always bothered me. Plus, he is HUGE! He doesn’t scale at all with MP Grimlocks. He has to be a standalone figure in my collection.

Does it have any paint chipping issues like the regular MP-44?

I got mine today and the thing that impresses me the most is the quality of my KO now I've got an official version to compare it too

I got the repaint at tfcon recently. I previously had the KO version but that one broke. I was able to transfer the blue eyes from the KO to this version. The yellow eyes were the only thing I wasn’t big on for this figure

Please did they fixed the MP44’s knees ? I would like so much from TAKARA to offer us an upgrade spare kit for our MP44 by the way…

I saw this at TFCon this weekend for $220. I would love to have this with Mp36+ Megatron but I missed out on that one. I hope we get a rerelease.

you forgot to mention the lights on the top of the cabin, the 44 has orange painted lights (which is a plus for me) while the 44S does not

Stickers on a $200 figure are nuts. I thought those were tampo etc. so glad I only do Legends, I just cannot see the value in MP.

I've been looking on a few online stores for 1 of these trying to find the best price . I couldn't believe it when I checked Hasbro pulse , it's the most expensive option I could find ! £ 30 more expensive than a UK based toy collectables site and £80 more than hobby link Japan . It seems VERY wrong to me that the company involved in production (in whatever way) is by far the most expensive

Does MP-44S still have the tabs on the knees or does he use the MP-49 Black Convoy mold

Back when MP-44 came out, I opted for the Transform Element instead so I am considering getting this one because I like the mold. I do wish it came with a Trailer and a Sparkplug figure. Regardless, this one would look good in my Masterpiece Diaclone display.

I have to say I’m a bit disappointed with this release after how well toy colors MP-36+ Megatron turned out. That one was awesome and is still one of my favorite things I own. Other than the colors and tampos, there’s really nothing G1 toy about this. A standard Takara MP-10 is more of a toy Optimus than this can ever be. At the very least, they needed to give him a toy head and not just paint the eyes yellow on the ‘86 movie head for MP-44. And I say this as somebody that owns the toon MP-44 (still no issues with his knees after five years) and still considers it to be the best version. Had they tried at least a little with this, I would have considered buying it. EDIT: Commented before I saw the bot mode. No tampos, just stickers.

I wish they woulda clipped that huge backpack with the sound thing, i'd definitely pick it up😃🤙

I got mine. mp44s is better imo. I like the new head sculpt. The darker color looks better more mature looking, doesnt look like a kids toy. Dont need the electronics and Im going to display this on robot mode I woudnt need the trailer but if it does come with it, it will stay in the box so dont need the trailer. The price for $200 its a win, unlike the mp44 that retails at $400 comes with tons of accessories that i dont need, Just need the gun and the axe thats it.

Looks good but I think the MS masterpiece Prime toy deco looks better. Considering they dropped the electronics that backpack should have been addressed.

Are you getting the missing link convoy? I know it's another Optimus Prime but it's a modern G1 update. I only pre-ordered Optimus without the cab

yeah this is definitely a cheaper option. I dont need a trailer and accessories that are going to just sit in a box in a closet somewhere. TFSource has him for $219. i may sang him =) not sure. it is either him or back the Haslab =( great review! ALL HALE FLOORTIME!!!
