Such a stark contrast to the Dragon2. I’m not necessarily knocking Starliner - if it works, it works - but you can’t help but notice a massive difference between the way these two vehicles were designed. It’s like Boeing used as many off the shelf parts/designs to get this thing flying.
None of the controls are from any planes or other Boeing vehicles. They're all invented specifically for Starliner. It's a difference in design philosophy. Starliner is designed to maximize redundancy, safety, and control. Starliner files by computer under normal circumstances, but it's designed so that it can be flown completely manually if ever need be. Hence the controls, switches, and knobs. Made to be flown by astronaut if the computer ever goes down.
@@user-ku7jn6fc6g If all those knobs and switches and dials were made specifically for this, Boeing got ripped off massively. They all look like off the shelf components that have existed for the last 70+ years or so. I swear I can buy a lot of those switches from my local music instrument store for a couple of dollars each.
They were both involved with the design especially Suni. So they probably wanted that because that what they’re used to. When Bob and Doug flew the crewed mission of dragon they said it was a massive learning curve with the touch screen.
They both pooped their diapers on the way up and they had to wash them in zero g and they have to reuse them for the way back. They're just pretending starliner is broken so they send another capsule with fresh undergarments so they don't have to sit in doo doo for 8 hours
Having 3 vehicles capable of getting up there is fantastic, more is always better but until they start making spacecraft less claustrophobic I think Ill keep my feet planted on the Earth. Still prefer the polished look of the SpaceX vehicles.
Hopefully Dream chaser from Sierra Space will be human rated forth spacecraft soon. So disappointed the US Congress did not pick Sierra Space instead of Boeing, guess not enough money for the politicians :(
Modern space exploration: The battle keeping 10 million things in their place and under control 😊 What a mess LoL Great tour. Thanks a lot and tie your hair ma'am.
They should have done a Dragon tour right after for comparison sake. I like steam gauges over glass cockpits but that doesnt mean I think the B-36's is the best either. There is a balance. And Starliner seams waaay to cramp for extended journeys.
I thank God for your successful liftoff, flight, and docking! I would love to fly Starliner! I bet that’s a blast maneuvering her manually! Y’all enjoy the ISS and prayers for a successful reentry and landing!
Their positivity about this Boeing craft has probably been dampened now that all the technical problems have surfaced and they're already a week overdue from returning because they have to try and sort out the issues before the return flight. Hopefully they return safely and Boeing can try to produce something more reliable next time.
Middle honor really that’s fucking stupid. I have friends that got killed in combat that deserved of honor. Do you even know the meaning of the metal honor
Guys, airlines haven't removed physical switches and knobs from their fleet's cockpits just because it's the 2020s and tablets are everywhere. So crewed spacecraft can absolutely have them, too. A lot of astronauts are former military pilots, so this layout might be easier and more intuitive for them to learn. Pressurized gloves can be clumsy to work with, so having a bigger button to press can be better for the crew. Also, Starliner looks cluttered because it's carrying a significant cargo payload. Crew rotation flights carrying 4 astronauts won't have all those cargo pallets onboard. It's good to test Starliner flying with a somewhat higher launch mass than a typical mission on this demo flight.
BrianFoss571 Airliners aren’t ever “the tip of the spear’ as far as avionics goes and they are usually up to 10 years behind the latest proven, reliable, up-to-date avionics. Airliners aren’t even flying with infrared vision yet and they have yet to put in synthetic ground mapping. Smaller OEM aircraft manufacturers have the flexibility to adopt the latest and greatest much quicker than the budget. Conscious airliner manufacturers are… Like Boeing.
@@bearlemley Starliner is every bit as advanced as Dragon. There are no systems Dragon has that Starliner lacks. Starliner just has a different design philosophy that gives pilots absolute manual control if the computers ever fail. Under normal circumstances the computer flies everything and it docks by LIDAR.

@@user-ku7jn6fc6g Starliner failed numerous times and Boeing is already at a loss of over a billion dollars from the Starliner program. Not to mention their track record for building regular airplanes is not too great.
They must feel very special being able to be only the very few that get to experience such amazing experience. Being so far away from earth, going so fast and surrounded by only smart folks.
Wow, the interior of this spacecraft looks really.. old. The screens not being CRTs and the tablet are about the only thing giving away that this wasn't a capsule interior designed in the 80s-early 2000s to me.
The astronauts were heavily involved in the designing of Starliner. The spacecraft is designed to give the astronauts complete manual control if the computers ever go down. Bob and Doug said getting used to Dragon’s touch screen iPad-like controls was a huge learning curve.
Boeing did not have the communications bandwidth except for the vital sensor data, they had to wait to get to use the ISS communication system. We have been totally spoilt by SpaceX live feeds, July will be exciting to see the updated Crew Dragon use ultra high bandwidth Starlinlk laser communications for the upcoming Polaris Dawn SpaceX EVA test.
When do we get d video of any craft approaching d ISS , catching up to it, docking, and eventually disconnecting. 2024 it is. We should b able to see this, no?
The starliner is actually a little bit larger in terms of volume it looks smaller because of the control panel takes up more room then it does in dragon
I believe Dragon volume is 9.3 cubic meters and Starliner has around 11 cubic meters. The controls in the crew dragon are smaller and can fold away for access, but it also includes a toilet space unlike Starliner.
Despite all of its technical issues, I love the Starliner. It just has a more analogue charm to it than SpaceX's clean, almost sterile look. Safe travels home.
Interesting how Starliner sort of looks like something that was made with components from the 60s and 70s. Not that I’m complaining merely and observation.
I think I'd rather have some controls and switches I can actually put my hands on in addition to the CRT screens. Dragon may look cleaner but it bothers me that most of the controls are images on a screen. All I can see is the screen going out for some reason.
Actually, those Orange bags are delivery bags. They have a part-time job with GrubHub and DoorDash : ) Imagine how big the tips would be from the other astronauts. : )
Why the hell are they both grabbing that ring around the DO NOT TOUCH HANDLE just to move around? And here's my seat, just turn around, oops I just hit the eject handle. My bad.
I believe I would be on the radio with Elon asking Space X to get a dragon capsule ready to come rescue you from the Space Station after confirming all thrusters are operational. Why they took off with a known leak is beyond me. Should have called Elon.
4:18 Nice that Boeing put that little red ring handhold so conveniently placed between them Pilot and CoPilot. Great for steading oneself in zero gee. I'll bet the Pilot had a hold of it all during launch too, to steady himself... 4:43 "and hunker down and hopefully everything..." holding the little red ring.
He looks scared like he pooed his diaper on the way up holding that handle. Talking about his emergency equipment like he's probably gonna have to use it and running emergency drills. He thinks they might die
vacuum cleaners don't scrub ,guess it sucks they can't do the ascent in the pants and T,s , it's like an science station support capsule , they are intuitive and it goes with the station , lovely matched n hatched, manipulation of the robust high above the , hair bands. hopefully a frequent attraction
when they talk about helium leakage they talk about ten molecules per hour) you will only notice it with instruments. It’s just that some of the design components need improvement. This is a test flight, by the way, and is being done specifically for inspections.
