A friend of mine just picked up an 81 300SD Turbo Diesel, it doesn't seem to fun on all cylinders, and the Transmission shifts funny, i'm all sure because it sat for 5 years, but its really like riding on a couch!!! Why don't they make cars like that now days???
I had a 1970 Mercedes 220D my dad gave it to me when it had a 150,000 miles on it . I used to drive it at 60 mph that was it cruising speed . I used to live in the peoples republic of Berkeley in commiefornia . I loved that car more than any car I have ever had it went to 762,000 miles on it without ever taking the heads off it had the original Clutch . replaced shocks at 250,000 miles , I replaced engine mounts twice, two starters, 4 battery's. See how good cars used to be before EPA dug there teeth into us and before the bureaucratic politicians took over. Its to bad benzes now are a pile of junk and brake all the time. By tbr way Myrtle meet its end when my brother drove it into a telephone pole he got a real good nose job as a result. anyway a guy bought the engine and put it in his boat without rebuilding it he said it ran perfect. If that car was a women I would have married in a heart beat.
I used to have one, my first car, not a D, but a 73 220. Baby blue, black interior, Chevy 350 engine inside (some crazy mechanic's conversion). Got for 1100$ back in 1997 or so. Just had a dream about it and woke up crying. Bless you for this.
lol you are welcome? Chevy 350....that's not surprising since that gas burner had a Solex carb on it that most people won't touch. The 6cyl 280 had twin carbs.
You lost me there with the engine talk..I don't know that much about the inner workings of cars, but I do know that the dude had to grind on the engine blocks to get the 350 in and that there was so much torque on the drive train that when I shifted (was an automatic) from drive to reverse or park, the whole back end of the car would lift up and drop back down as I shifted back and people thought I had hydraulics. Lol. Loved that car.
I wish they did. If your friend isn't familiar with Mercedes, he should do a valve job soon, that may help get it running good again. Also, those transmissions depend on a vacuum signal to shift, so he will want to go over all the vacuum lines to look for leaks. They tend to ESPECIALLY leak inside the car where they go to the door locks and trunk. Another common leak area is at the junctions at the left rear of engine compartment.
Man I am really enjoying driving this car around. I rebuild the vacuum pump, replaced a lot of hoses and fuel line, put the fast glow glowplugs in it. It starts in ten seconds now. If you guys think this is loud, dont buy any old Volkswagens. Mine are much louder than this is. I can actually talk to the other people in the car with me. This car rides awsome also.
WhoSaidTyler what year, automatic?, gas mileage? I dont really know. I drove this for a month on one tank of fuel. That is driving it daily. And out of town a couple of times. Loving it.
That thing screams! It needs another gear! I love those old benz's. Its sad to see them in the junkyard! They are in great shape compared to the ones I used to see on the road in the north east all rusted out
Everyone drives like that around here. I am barely through the intersection and working into 2nd gear and everyone is darting around me because I actually want to enjoy my drive and I don't have this rush to be everywhere right away. My Dad drives the same way and I can't stand it, you got all day! That thing sure does stay wound up on the highway...
Swap in a 5cyl turbodiesel. Remember though, "fast" is relative. After a certain point it makes more sense to buy another car because you are migrating away from the character of the car.
Everything from seat cushions to glow plugs insulators. Parts aren't as expensive as you'd think either. Parts are more expensive for my 1985 w126 380se than they are for my 1974 w115 240d.
I love old Mercedesses and especially the Diesel ones. I have only one question, what is that ''knob'' you are twisting to make the car run different? Is it like a choke?! Legitimate question i am only 23 and the oldest car i ever drove was an ''75 Mercedes 280sec of my aunt but it didn't have that ''knob''.
Rodrigo Ros Then how about not commenting on the video? That car had a ton of miles and was worn out due to low compression on one cylinder. He had since then sold this car to someone who probably ended up fixing it. God, how much of an idiot do you have to be?
This engine sounds pretty good for an OM615. You're 1999 is much newer. Diesels have come a long way since these were new. Notice how there's no remote start to this diesel and the glow plugs take forever to heat up? And how on a new diesel they start instantly and can be remote started? I have a 1974 w115 240d, much like the one in this video. But I've got a 1983 Volvo 240 and it's 4 cylinder is much louder and has much more valve noise than my 2016 Honda. The reason for that is my Volvo doesn't have hydraulic lifters and has rubber valve silencers that fill with oil. My Honda has hydraulic lifters, sound insulation under the hood, on the engine and is also just newer. Engines have come a long way in 40 or so years.
