This video illustrates perfectly why drag racing is the best form of motorsports in existence. Could you imagine a NASCAR, Indy or Formula 1 star taking the time to make a 30 minute video to give fans an inside look at everything they do from start to finish? Drag racers are by far the most fan friendly of all the race car drivers. It is amazing to attend a drag racing event and take a stroll through the pits. You can actually walk right up to the cars and can talk to the drivers. And they embrace the fans, rather than treating fans as a nuisance. It is simply a different world. For anyone that hasn't gone to an NHRA or PDRA event, you owe it to yourself to experience this just once. If you do, you are hooked for life.

Steve I have been watching lots of videos where you are one of the drivers, and I must say you really have a handle on your car, from the starting line to wheeling back around..your car launches and accelerates so fast !! I thought I was fast back in the early to mid 80's with my 1st car,a 67 SS Camaro with a 327 I built..it was fast for back then but my god your car and others are so badass ! Keep it up and stay safe ! I am hoping you guys come to Ennis,Texas at the Texas Motorplex sometime so I can check you all out ! Thanks for the awesome video here !

You meant three to four minutes from the time you fire it to the time you let go of the button you could even get the car staged in three or four seconds. I'm sure most people knew what you meant. I think you're one of the cooler Racers out there hope you kick their ass every season especially old man Smith like to see you run some NPK I don't think they would want any of you... I have a B&J Quick Drive converter trans brake set up that works similar to your Lenco trans brake unit. Something you might try doing when slowing down from a burnout is just before barely coming to a stop, activate the trans brake button and feel it into reverse. Slides in like butter because the transmission has stopped but the output shaft to the driveshaft is still barely turning with the movement of the car. Do the same when backing up from a burnout. Just as you are about to come to a stop hit the trans brake button just before stopping and you'll be able to move the lever to forward gear feeling it in with little effort. It keeps you from getting stuck between gear teeth where it won't let you find the forward/reverse gear without releasing the trans brake button again and again.

There is so much going on in a very little amount of time , even with you doing a run down , there is still so much more. Love the video , but Stevie you still was on the wheel after you left. I paused this video, rewind , slow mo it all a hundred times . And it made my head hurt. Glad I drive a PSRA Outlaw Pro Mod with a glide. That sh!$ with the shifter , trans break , and brake pedal would definitely be worth having a camera in the car. AWSOME . Everybody should put there ear buds in, crank the volume up , and watch this run from start to shut down , and pause and rewind often. U the MAN Stevie

That was awesome, informative and entertaining Steve, thanks! I've "only" designed and built Virginia Tech's Formula SAE car for four years eons ago as well as being our engine team leader and doing 100% of our dyno tuning for our turbo charged fuel injected 20mm post throttle restricted Honda CBR 600 F3 motors. I autocrossed these cars as well as my daily driver, a 1973 Porsche 914 2.0 liter (the bigger if the two available engines. 😱😋 At least she only weighed 2,030 lbs at Watkins Glen with a full tank of gas. I've been a John Forde fan since I was a kid because he was sponsored by Castrol and that's what dad put in his car, then as a young teen I liked his win or die trying attitude, his "don't wash the good luck sweat out of it" fire suit, etc. I imagine y'all build your own motors, do you? What about the chassis? Are you able to race on sponsorship money or are you like my old coworker's friend who lived on adrenaline and credit cards while his other racing friend scraped by on money won & contingency? Take care and good luck. I learned a lot, that was awesome. Thanks again.👊

You sir are awesome thank you for a great inside look i am a 61 year young man that got into drag racing in 1995 as a photographer. I met a guy with a pro street car we had fun but never got the grasp of there was more to it than go to the track race a bit load up drink beer and go home. In 2004 i hooked up with a boss from work and we won a I.H.R.A. World Championship together. I later was on a funny car team with a 1948 fiat Topoleneo and a JR. Dragster which in 2008 i was awarded a Trophy for crew chief of the year in the Jr. Dragster part of the team. In 2011 i joined a T/A Dragster team and our first run set a track record at home of .98 sixty foot and a 4.98 188 mph in the 1/8 th mile but do to the job thing i had to leave that venture. Hope i didnt bore you but i would love to see more and wish you the best in 2019.

Do you use a pro-cube delay box? If so... I’ve been doing a research project on the Z-Force setting. Granted a professional driver already has well-established a movement pattern... I believe for a novice: just pressing the trans brake button down, instead of holding it down then releasing, allows you to decrease the perceptual demand of telling your antagonist muscle to quiet down and simultaneously telling the agonist muscle to contract; Simply tapping the button to set the brake then tapping to release has a lower mean reaction time in ~24 of the 32 people I’ve tested.

good stuff Stevie It's hard to explain what it feels like to people . I will never forget my first time trying to make a pass key word TRY in a Funny Car . You know how people are I wish I could drive that . Well you will know real fast after they strap you in and start that beast up and you said it best this thing wants to EAT you and you have to push the pedal to the floor and hold it. Man you start thinking man what am I doing. you will find out real quick if it's for you or not. I loved it after I stopped freaking out. But it's about the money . Best of luck hope you can keep the money coming in. As they say No Money No funny as Paul Smith would tell me.

Its alot to take in. Ive never drove quicker then 10.30, ive been around 8.50 cars intimately, and i totally understand this is a process. Although a little long winded, this was an awesome real life description. Also as he indicates, different drivers do different things...i mean, imagine that! Most important to me is when you bump in top bulb, you care less about other lane. U got a job to do. Do your own proven thing going all in, and react. I like what he said about not staring down the tree. Pro tree you stare down the center of the top bulb. If you bracket racing its not much different, but for me stare down the center of the 3rd yellow. Nothing else matters. Im no expert and i enjoyed this video!

TUTORIAL???...This is more of a "Documentary" !.....WOW !!!....I RESPECT YOU SIR !!! Warren Johnson could NOT have done a better job...Great articulation and communication skills with spot-on information that I'm sure answered a lot of questions people had been inquisitive about but were afraid to ask. Most fans know you guys are at "work" when you're at the races and find "question(s)" as inappropriate. BTW ...I used to run this class back in the late eighties with a Don Ness Camaro before "Pro Mod" was added under IHRA sanctioning. At that time, The class was labeled as "Top-Sportsman". Pro Mod was added later on to relinquish the "Quick-8" category of Top-Sportsman. Fans wanted to see the Nitrous elites of Top-Sportsman on Sunday, But the Quick-8 shootouts were ran Saturday nights and ALL of those guys was only there for the Quick 8 purse to begin with so they intentionally go out first round Sunday...There goes half of the show right there !!!...Great times 👍👍
