Shadow Fighting - Takedown Counters:
Rehearse your counter techniques against an imaginary opponent that is attempting to execute a takedown for the duration of the drill. Note the difference between a takedown and a throw: A throw technique would cause both of your feet to leave the ground simultaneously, while a takedown technique typically would not. Include defenses and counterattacks to double and single leg takedowns, side trip takedowns, bear-hug trips, and any other takedown techniques with which you’re familiar. When first practicing this drill, simply executing an effective defense is sufficient. As you get more proficient, you’ll want to incorporate not just a defensive movement, but also an offensive counter that preferably would result in your opponent’s submission. We provide a list of counters to specific takedown attacks for your reference in this program. Work both sides.
