Been for watching this channel for a bit. Today-got serious: took the extender leash to locked length; corrected cat chasing; dog chasing/ barking; people chasing /barking; maintained heal w/out words/yelling; w/out treats begging for her to look at me. In 30 mins I have a dog that is calm & attentive. In another week….can only imagine. Thank you!!! ❤️
That's awesome! The flexi leads are so dangerous and actually reward the dog with more freedom for pulling on leash. Tried using it with my very first dog, a Whippet, and before I knew it, she was in the middle of the road - didn't even feel it happen. If you forget and grab that rope on a flexi, can get a very bad burn or worse. Next time, I had flexi with leashes the entire way (so no litte rope) on my Min Pin and a Boxer who took off after geese. Just like water skiing, let go of the rope. Well I didn't - still hurts when you hit the ground. Want a dog to stop pulling on leash, this video, video with the Rottweiler named Creed, and ditch the flexi. You're not going anywhere until they're on your page. Proactive stops - do they stop when you do? If not, back the other way BEFORE the pulling happens - you know if they care whether you're on the other end of the leash or not. Had an instructor who spent a whole week in the driveway with a cigar of string cheese hanging out of her mouth. The neighbors were even laughing at her. Guess what, they're not laughing anymore. She can take the Rottweiler anywhere and he doesn't want to leave her side. Hope that helps.
well, I must say I didn't see that dog as leash reactive as I expected. I was expecting more like my min pin who goes into the "red zone" when he sees a car, bike, person, dog, etc. I would be interested in seeing a small dog with that type of reaction.
This man is a genius. My Cavoodle was terrible on the lead pulling making a very frustrating walk for both of us. After putting these instructions into play I have a different dog 24 hours later and it will only improve. Thank you !!!!

My ogusedto fly out the door barking and pulling. I've been using the door method and she now sits waits for the release. She's great with loose leash walking until she sees a dog. I was making her stop and sit. I've used treats, nothing was working. I'm working on the stop and pop method and the turn around method and stepping into the dogs path . She's WAY better after just 2 weeks. I've had enough of this reactivity. Now I'm moving on to encounters with other dogs which is making ME reactive! I realize Thank you for this humane sensible training method. Shes very smart and I'm no dummy or quitter. We are going to get this under control!!! I need to be consistent and confident. I was also lacking confidence, this stops now. Thank you for giving me the tools to help her and myself.👍
Thank you for making a video with a small dog. This is so helpful. I have a terrier who is wildly reactive on walk toward other dogs (barking and lunging). We have built up his tolerance a bit where he can at least see them and not immediately react. But you’re right. I don’t want to just distract him or always have to cross the street. It’s helpful to see how quickly change can happen. I am excited to incorporate these tips.
I have a 9 yo beagle and I have had many health issues over the coarse of his life. I’ve never been able to leash train him due my health. I defaulted to him pulling me whenever I was well enough to get him out. I recently came across your videos and i am in awe of how this works. It’s like a miracle lol still not the best reactions to other dogs but definitely not dragging me down the street and out the front door! It’s getting better and watching more videos regarding him barking and pulling at other dogs. Kinda think my boy has some anxiety issues. Still so grateful. I also take my two yo beagle out as well with zero prior leash training and this is working so well. 🎉🎉🎉I take them out individually infront of my house and maybe two houses down snd make several turns and stops and I think my neighbors think I’m nuts lol all the while I wait for dogs to go buy us to train some more 🎉🎉🎉🎉 Ty for sharing all of this content I’m so grateful ❤ I watch my mom with dementia during the day Monday-Friday so this leash training has helped me find a sunny spot in my day😊
Thank you. I have a fearful reactive rescue who hasn’t responded really well to other methods. Partly because I’m always afraid I’ll hurt his neck as he can violently thrash his head when reacting to certain dogs. Today after using this method, with very gentle corrections, consistently on a long walk I saw a huge improvement. It’s reassuring to have this advice specific to a small dog.
The best part and most distinct thing that sets you apart from other trainers is that you don't ask the dogs to sit heel or whatever. You understand that it's the state of mind they're in. Not whether they can perform a 'sit' command. Cos I've seen many leash reactive dogs performing a 'sit' as if it's a trick and continue barking even while seated. Awesome video

This was so helpful for small dog owners. I will be doing this I don't like treats and dog breath hands on a 10 minute morning walk. For some reason he's fine in the afternoon and evening walks. It's like a different dog.
Joel, you are a God’s send. I have a galactic reactive, aggressive and overly hyper rescue- the shelter said she is a retriever mix, and positive training made her worst. Perhaps, it was my lack of experience (first dog at 60), but I started your method, and I can see the improvement! Appreciate you!!!
People who see this: No matter what you heard, saw, belive, got told or did until now, FORGET IT and TRUST this man! I've never met him nor have I ever talked to him but I know he is ONE HUNDRED PERCENT right! This is ALL you need to do if your dog does not behave on leash. I have small but very lively Yorkshire, he's such a good boy, we trained him professionally from the begining to do the basic stuff you want your dog to do, like a sit, lay down, stay and all of that. However, he's a terrier and they are agile and often just want to do their thing instead of what YOU want them to do. So even tho he is a good leash walker in general he every so often tried to fly off or run out the door (or back in) without us telling him to do so. I SWEAR to you, I tried the methods he shows in his videos and my dog instantly understood what's going on. First time giving him the slight pull back on the leash was pretty shocking for him, I could clearly see it in his look, he realized that something was not right there. I did that on ONE walk and belive it or not, after our 20 min. walk he just walked when I did and he stopped immediately when I did. There was almost not pulling and he waited at the door to get in. OK as I said, he is not a completley untrained dog so all of that was not really new to him but he tends to forget sometimes and that's just briliant to fix it instantly. I didn't had treats with me but you won't need them if your dog already learned that you are the good guy. I just let him know he's the best dog, that's really enough at this point. Remember, you won't get an extra paycheck for doing what you're supposed to do so why would you treat your dog for that reason?

I really appreciate that you've made many different videos about leash reactivity -- seeing the variety of dogs and the slightly different levels of force that works with dogs of different sizes and ages has helped me understand better what will be appropriate for my 8 month old Standard Poodle. I'm seeing improvement in just two days!

I was missing a detail all these walks... To stop and do the method when there is a dog in sight and before my dog sees it. I believe that is essential to do with my dog. Once he sees the dog it is almost impossible to get him focused on me. Once again, amazing video, greatly appreciated. I just wish I found you before my wife got a trainer that uses e-collar! Luckily, we lost the controller, but there goes all that money down the drain... Joel, thank you.
Have you tried to correct as soon as your dog notices? My dog will notice - perk up look at the dog but the leash will stay loose until the dog gets closer even a cross the other side of the street- then he will lunge and bark and I will correct. Would you stop and correct as soon as he sees the dog? By pulling the leash and getting him to look at you? Even if the leash is still loose and he hasn’t lunged? Just curious how you have done this? I want to correct before he reacts but I am not sure how… so I end up waiting. Thank you!!
I have a similar problem with my dog. She can see a dog at the end of the street, walking away from her. Her reaction is immediate, and the only way to get her to calm down is to turn her around and sit her in front of me (facing me). As soon as she sees the dog again, she goes crazy. I'm hoping the pop and turn will help.
Joel has some reactive dog videos from years ago where they actually meet other dogs on leash - has to be a loose leash and 3 second rule. If you wait until 5 seconds, that's when something bad can happen. 1001, 1002, 1003, let's go and you're walking away from the other dog. Good job , was that your buddy? Of course you're not doing this if the other dog isn't good or you know your dog actually wants to kill other dogs. If you know someone with a well behaved dog around other dogs and know their dog is vaccinated, can parallel walk them, etc - that would be ideal. Hope that helps.

I can't wait to try your method. I have a 6 pound Yorkie and she is so reactive. She's constantly pulling side ways and pulling forward. It's so frustrating. I have 3 dogs. 2 older dogs that are already trained so my new 4-month-old puppy is causing chaos when walking. I really hope this works. Thank you for an awesome video!

I’ve been letting my little Cavapoo run freely as a puppy thinking he needs to explore and sniff around to figure out the world (and I tend to walk him around fields), but now he’s getting worse at being reactive to everything. As he gets bigger I want him to really be able to walk properly. I’ve been taught the bend down and feed a treat method but you’re right, I only ever bother with that for when I desperately need him to behave around another dog or person as opposed to all the time because i can’t just walk bent down the whole time.
I have the same dog you were training. A 7 lb Maltese and he has the same problem, but my dog is worse. He lunges at dogs, cars, people., etc. I've tried everything and this video may just help us out. My husband and I have been trying some of your techniques and we see a small improvement so far. Check out his Rottweiler named Creed video - foundation for loose leash walking and reactivity. Quick 5 min game of retrieve before going on a walk helps take the edge off too. He also has a video of calming ovals from years ago. Hope that helps.
Your videos are so helpful in clearly demonstrating a balanced approach to dog training. That approach has gotten great results with my smart but ditsy-hyper, needy af, 7-month old Aussie rescue pup. Consistency and clarity of correction are key. We are making great strides now in walking on leash, walking in the company of other dogs/people, and meeting new people in public situations.
I only meant one thing. I think I have seen all youtube channels that talk about conduct and have tried all possible methods as my very dominant boxer pulled like crazy and attacked dogs. After using all of Joe's methods my dog has completely changed. he does not pull on the leash, when he meets other dogs he sits and greets calmly and when we pass in front of the gates where there are barking dogs he remains indifferent and always focused on me. Love the small dog items. All too often they become too big for their boots because of the cuteness factor. You’re right about treats too. My dog isn’t always interested in them anyway so other strategies are needed.

Thank you for the most intelligent, common sense instructions to be found anywhere - and it is free! Your loose leash walking method is the best! We've had the pleasure of adopting many rescue dogs over the years, all with different personalities and needs. Our latest, a 18 lb - 18 mo old Chihuahua / poodle mix is proving to be a challenge we are needing help on. We adopted Quinn during Covid (Zoom meet and greet) ( he sounds like one of those Tijuana border puppies you spoke of - from Chula Vista Humane Society) - have had him 7 months. He is loving to my husband and myself - and loves (though very roughly ) his Cairn Terrier mix 12 yo sister. We are finding Quinn To be aggressive, growl bark, lunge, snap at any other humans, dogs, motorcycle, etc. on his walks and inside the house. He will not let people in the house, without being put in another room. We've worked with a praise only trainer (3 months training and exercises that continue daily) and our vet. With their advice Quinn is taking 15mg Prozac daily. The Prozac has made his sleepier and somewhat less anxious in general. I'd love your take on psychotropic drugs used in behavior modification therapy. I'm watching all of your videos and reading all comments - learning more, and trying your methods. Your loose leash walking - prep in the house and as you walk out , has done more to make walks more pleasurable and let us enjoy more of the outside world. Please keep publishing small dog reativity/aggression behavior modification training. I feel at a loss in dealing with Quinn on a walk when we suddenly meet a trigger (Large black dog on deck 25 feet away) and he hits a level 10 in lunge, bark, snap. Thank you so much. I’ve been practising trying to learn the moves in this video and will continue because this is the only method that has worked out of many other dog trainer’s techniques. Even if I haven’t gotten this practise quite right yet, my one year old Mini schnauzer got so much better at the leash walk even on the first day trying this. 🐶😊☃️

I have a one year old Pomeranian who is usually well behaved at home, but out on walks she barks like CRAZY when we see other dogs. I feel like I've tried so many things. Like distracting her with treats and trying to turn around when we see other dogs. I know she's barking out of excitement and not aggression... but I really want to stop the behavior! I'm going to try this on our next walk! Thank you!
I have a Beagle/JRT mix whose revert to mode is barking. Have said No Bark or we're going home, your choice. You have to follow through the very first time you say it so they know you're not crying wolf. And you're going back home on the boring part of the walk you've already been on. Next walk, could be later the same day or even the next day, same thing - No Bark or we're going home - your choice. They almost always choose the walk. You can almost see the wheels turning - hmmm, do I want to bark and go home or do I want to keep walking with Mom or Dad? For dogs barking in their own yard, will say No Bark, he's doing his job - if that was your yard, you'd be doing the same thing. Usually get one whine and we continue on our walk. Hope that helps.
Nice vid, really instructive.Maybe is not 100% perfect method for a 5 month old puppy as you said in others vid but i can say that it works really well for my female shiba. Since i started to watch your video 3 months ago and apply your methods she drastically improved her overhaul behaviour (not only on walks)!
Thank you for it making it look so simple. For myself, during a reactive episode, It's a shock in a way, as a handler, like being a deer in the headlights moment, where the dog's all of a sudden stronger: lunging & getting what he/she wants; ie barking at cars, dogs, people... vs my re-direction skills. I will practice of course, redirecting away sooner.
Great video! I have two small dogs were one is no big problem (he is a bit of a scaredy-cat and will often gladly stay at my side) while the other one is way too brave for his own good 😆. The treat in front of the nose thing is not TEACHING anything. I have been there. Might work if the dog is super food motivated, but will not let the dog understand cause and effect and help the dog overcome the reactivity issue. “Eating mode” will not allow brain to absorb anything else.
This is the video I needed to see, since my two dogs are similar to Bailey. I always walk on a harness, which I think ramps up their pulling, but I'm afraid of hurting their necks. Appreciate seeing you walking Bailey with a regular collar. Going to try to apply your methods. Thanks so much.
Your videos have helped me so much with my new dog. He is some sort of doberman mix, about 1-1/2 years old. He was leash reactive with other dogs, and it was scary. I haven't had an incident ever since I started loose leash training. I do use a prong collar though because he is very strong.

This method, whatever it is, is what I do with my dogs. I see it as we build a partnership built on me taking you around this cool world and you listen so we stay safe and have a good time. Mutual respect. I don't want to constantly talk either. Most of it is fluff peopke use and get confused why the dog isn't listening anyways. Body language and noises work perfectly fine and are undramatic. Some dogs also get absolutely stupid in a bad way with treats too. My old dog was PERFECT and I ditched treats with training in the beginning because it was mindless actions and messy energy for a cookie instead of focusing on me. Now im the reward, im the party, im your protection, let's have a good adventure together and id change nothing. People comment on their beautiful manners all the time. The small and big dogs.
" by the time your dog flips out, you kinda lost". So TRUE! Our adopted Doberman + bull is still very insecure and reactive to anything that moves. He's doing much better with loose leash walk AT HOME, in his safe space. But he still pulls like a machine out of the house. Would you mind showing us, WHEN the dog flips out, what can we do then? I would love to see this, too. When my dog freaks out the only way to get her to calm down is to turn her away from the dogs, but then once she sees them again her reaction is immediate.

I mean having some treats in the pocket doesn't hurt. But watching zack and this guy, this guy is hands down a better trainer. It's been now over 10 years since i owned a dog, i was just so sad i couldn't bring myself to get another one. But now that i am an adult i think im read again for a dog in my life. Pretty sure he has a few older videos of leash reactive dogs on front correcting harnesses that actually get to meet each other and walk together - parallel walking. They just keep doing 180 degree turns until they stop reacting before they can get close enough to meet on loose leashes - has to be loose and 3 second rule. Wanna meet your friend? If they go fwd and start reacting, 180 degree turn, away from the dog, then once good in that direction, turn back towards the other dog. Have done this before and they walked together to the fenced in area where they got to run off leash - but both dogs had muzzles on for protection. They had a ball and no vet visits. Hope that helps.

Our dog is doing great with most of common problems but without a leash, he walks very fast and the distance is in a short time mostly to big. If we say stop or stay he stops and wait but how to force him to keep in a radius of arround 4-5 meters? All the best for you and your family. Greats from germany
Thank you for this...I feel I’m getting incrementally closer. Been walking my rescue pup twice daily for 6 months and he loses engagement completely, even after stopping, and turning. He becomes very verbal and turns his head behind as I walk away. I feel he just wants to meet dogs, but his demeanor is threatening to other dogs and things escalate. He is otherwise the most lovable pup. Makes walks a bummer sometimes. Would love to experience progress/success. Would love to see your interaction in meeting another dog you don’t know. Happens to us daily.
This is exactly what my little dog does too! I feel like I have my dog's attention when nothing exciting is going on. She won't pull on the leash and she looks up at me. But after seeing another dog she starts barking like crazy! Even when I turn around to walk away she still wants to look behind and keeps barking! It's like she ignores me completely until the other dog totally gone. And yes! I would love to see a video on small dogs meeting another dog or walking past dogs calmly too!
Exactly! I would like to see how correct the over excitement when my dog sees other dog and wants to meet and play. Please, please, make more videos about this!
From what I gather, if your dog is in full stimulation mode and already barking and lunging, then in that state they're not even able to hear you. Correcting during the excitement isn't going to do anything, it's before they build up to that. I know it's easier said than done, I'm still trying to get this right but I also have a dog that sees a dog and it kind of starts from that point.
You’ve described what I experience with my rescue Dane. I know he’s a sweetie, but his size and sound of his bark is intimidating to others. I also know he wants to meet the other dogs, but doesn’t know how and I’m not sure how to get him there. These videos are so helpful, but I still have a lot of work to do.
Can I just say it? You’re videos are 1,000,000 times better than Zak George’s…. Huge part of it is because you don’t use a harness, you have actual control over the dog. Bailey is a cutie.
What's the problem with harnesses? Just that it doesn't have the same effect as correcting at the neck? Harnesses are really convenient for small dogs, I pick mine up like a handbag haha
A lot of small dogs cannot have collars due to medical issues. Brachiocephalic dogs like pugs, Frenchies, bulldogs for example, have difficult times with breathing even more so with collars. Yorkies can easily have trachea collapses because of collars. There's good reasons certain breeds can't use them plus it's a lot easier for them to slip out of collars. I'd like to see that addressed and recognized and then shown how to do this with a harness like it's supposed to be with those breeds.
We have a bike path in front of our house and part of it goes through the woods. At the end of the path in the woods 3 huge boxers live (fenced in) and literally terrorize every person, dog, biker that walks by. My Mini Aussie (10 months, 23 lbs) literally pulls my arm so bad I can hardly stand it because they are running up and down their fence barking jumping and scaring her. I have tried everything but she looses it when we get to that area. I've tried stopping every few steps, backing up and just running through. I realize the bike path goes through what they think is their domain but it's a nightmare. Every person that owns a dog on this path have a problem with their dogs barking at people; running, walking, biking. We do have Invisible Fence so that helps. I'm glad I found you!
I have an English springer who is rubbish on her lead. I hate walking her. In the park or beach she is great, checks in and recall is great. I’m going to try this at the front door and start there. I would love to be able to enjoy a walk.
This is great and even one session helped. Since I have a chihuahua I started using collar + harness (used to only have harness) and for the first time my dog noticed I exist on walks. However I don’t know what to do when he feels insecure and stops walking. Sometimes it’s stubborn behavior but sometimes I can see he’s genuinely afraid so I don’t want to drag him. The dog in the video seems super eager to walk but I don’t know what to do when mine just puts the breaks on?

I see how you are not afraid to get your point across with your voice and again, I was the same way. I’m thinking by watching some of your other videos that your distraction methods in addition to a loud voice may remedy the situation however I look to the experts like you for the best possible advice. Can’t wait to watch that video you have coming on this. Keep up the great videos!
Love the effort, the focus, the experience and the knowledge you offer; as well as the demonstrations. My only negative is that you presume you know your audience and seem to paint everyone (okay, most) with the same brush. For the most part, I watch you for reassurance that I'm doing/did it right. Don't put your audience in a bucket. I can't relate when you talk about the audience like we are all ignorant. Less criticism on the audience and more discussion on the individual dog your demonstrating, please. Thank you for everything you do, your time and your dedication to results. I appreciate you.
I will allow my corgi to say hi to females with owners permission of course and that eliminates some lunging and growling as he is a charming gentleman. If it is boy then we will not say hi and all the hell brakes loose.
I have the same situation, after correcting or stopping and my dog stops too she doesn't automatically look at me so just after the correction I get her to look at me with noises and as soon as she makes eye contact I say good girl and let's go. Hopefully over time (could take months, a year!) she will look at me on her own.
Then you need to do more obedience training and socialisation. People tend to forget that a dog needs structure for training to succeed. Dogs have feelings, dogs have needs. You have to look at the dog as a whole. It's not the same as a video game where you press a certain number of buttons (= training technique) to get a result (= a behaved dog). A dog is not a robot.
This is really helpful. Putting treats in front of them to get their attention genuinely doesn't work at all for me Yorkshire terrier, he's just not interested in food outside, especially with any distractions like dogs around. He's not aggressive at all but whines and pulls to get to other dogs to say hello. I'm definitely going to try this, I may need to switch him to a collar as he is usually on a harness as I worry about collapsing trachea (he has a very frail neck, he's only about 5.5 pounds) but if I can get him into a good pattern of behaviour so he doesn't pull to other dogs in the first place I'd be happy

Hi Joel, thanks for all of your videos they are really helpful. I have loved watching your RU-vid community grow. You really deserve that. I have a question about how to apply this method to a dog that doesn’t pull when they see another dog, but rather stops and stares hard at them, and fur on her back goes up because she’s quite scared and anxious of other especially larger dogs. As they walk closer then she reacts (growls and lunges), but has never bitten or attacked another dog since she’s not aggressive (she’s a fearful street dog). What would you do in that case? Just as an aside she’s very good at loose leash walking, she doesn’t pull on walks.
i hope you come back here to see this! what about when your puppy of this size requires a harness. she has a mild tracheal collapse and unsure of how to train her and afraid of hurting her.
He also has harness videos - front correcting - so clip in the front as the back connecting harnesses just tend to encourage pulling. It can be done, just takes a lot longer with a back correcting harness. We practice in the house first with an empty dish across the room. If they can't get to the dish on a loose leash in the house, they're not ready for a walk. Suzanne Clothier's automatic check in is one of the first things we teach in any of our classes. So without making any noises or saying their name, you're just waiting for them to look at you. As soon as they do, Yes, pause, treat. Thank you. It has help Me on walks tremendously, yet working on the reactivity when distance is small, he can handle it when they are a bit far but if to close he whine and bark and lunges, it is getting better. I will apply the walking away and coming back until he can manage it

Yes! I’d love to see your advice on this question too. Our 8yr recently adopted small dog does great on our usual walk around the neighborhood, doesn’t pull and listens when we say “wait” or “let’s go” at intersections. But if we take her in a different direction or new place she’ll just freeze. Like a statue. For no apparent reason. I’ve tried to give her a gentle pop/ tug on the leash forward but she’Il just let herself be dragged rather than start walking. I end up having to pick her up and carry her.
Keep working on it consistently. I was able to make huge progress with my rescue Cattle Dog in a few weeks, and I initially thought he’d end up getting put down. I totally subscribe to the idea you have to take control before you even step out the door.
@Ben sparv The only other thing I can offer from my experience is this: it took a variety of methods to progress my dog, and things that worked initially didn’t continue to work. I do wish you luck, and suggest trying different approaches. The loose leash methods in this video really have helped me get my dog to a new level of reliability after some strong corrections initially. I appreciate how difficult it can be when you love your dog, but they act crazy sometimes. Everyone in that situation just wants to fix the problem.

That’s one of the most important factors and not ONCE do you allow misbehavior or pulling you might not even be able to get a block but under no circumstance do you let them throw you around and have them continue to walk you
