Great demo as always Travis. You'll be missed. Hope your new endeavors take you far and you come back to make some guest appearances every now and then!
I have a C5... roll the bass all the way off, back the mids to at least 12 o'clock and add treble to taste. Push the volume past 2 o'clock with the attenuator off. No pedals. Rock TF out.
"It's not a $3k amp" After a certain price you are paying for expensive small details . Clapton, Beck , Joe Perry , Joe Walsh recorded with a Fender champ . For a live tone , the bigger amp are desired cause of monitoring reasons but you could still use one if you desire the tone coming through the mic and PA speakers . I always thought the drive from smaller amps was better than a wall of sound . Most the sound comes through the fingers anyway !
I agree Tobi. I have the head version paired with a 4 12 bottom and the Bogner Ecstasy red and blue. My band mates told me I was too loud! Sounded great though.
*_Bonus at bottom_* *VERY COOL ' '1+ 1/2 THICK (cut from 2 pine BEE BOX kits) INTO SWEET 12" closed back speaker* I JUST BOUGHT A CRATE V16 PALOMINO CLASS-A PUSH PULL 15 WATTS (made in USA...weren't they all?). THEY ARE READILY OUT THERE BETWEEN 200-300 usd'$...mine was $247 TO MY DOOR IN 3 DAYS. THE BEST SOUNDING AMP IN THE LOCAL MUSIC-GO-ROUND STORE ( that one sold for $249 over night stupid me should have paid the $20 to hold it, but found one online the next day in like new condition and "recent tubes" but it s WITH TWEED FENDERS, A NEW SUPRO BLACK MAGICK, A MARSHALL CLASS 5 HEAD THROUGH A GREEN BACK, AND A CRATE PALOMINO 2-12" V32 for $279. I sort of regret not getting the behamouth on wheels Crate V32, but the V16 sounded better. In my haste though I failed to realize the V32 was the same insides, Class A, just bigger and with FX loop and foot sw. lead rhythm. That leads me to the mod. See, the V16 stock has no " cleandistortion rhythm channel" , just the "lead channel" of the V32. So below I show the bypass one triode stage, that is 1/2 of a 12AX7, '1 added capacitor, 1 removed' mod [ LEAVE THE SUGGESTED ELECTROLYTIC CATHODE CAPACITOR ALONE! REMOVING IT TOTALLY ROBS VOLUME AND TREBLE. CONTRARY TO THE MODDERS HOW-TO ARTICLE THE AMP NOT 'TREBLE HEAVY. NOT EVEN WITH MY STRAT'S SINGLE COILS. DEFINITELY NOT FOR HUMBUCKERS - My Guild Bluesbird JB SH in bridge, 59 in neck). In fact a good old treble booster would be welcome on the Guild...but better is explained below. These USA made Crate amps are absolutely on par with boutique amps costing 5-10 times as much. SUPER QUALITY. PLUS I AM CERTAIN THE 12" CELESTION SPEAKERS LABELED FOR CRATE IN THE PALOMINOS ARE *_NOT_* THE 70/80' people say they are. The magnet looks more like a Celestion Vintage 30 or in that vain. I've had so many varieties of amps. Mostly 50-120 watt tube pp ab's British, but my first amp was a bone stock pre CBS black face Bandmaster head on Fender 2-12" cab with stock Utah's* . I got it for $25 at the age of 15 in 1981 or 1982. A steal! It worked perfect. Only issue was cosmetic. Today it would qualify as a 'rat rod'. It had cigarette burns clear across the front top edge of the front of the amp. We're talking 1inch 'leave it sitting there for the whole song or two' burns. Today beautiful, in 1982 hideous🚬🚬🚬🚬🚬 Okay after all of that I want to express my total delight in an amp I picked up for $247 to my door two weeks ago. A mint condition Crate V16 Palomino. It's a very loud 15 watt CLASS A ,PUSH PULL amp with 2-EL84's and 3 12AX7's. It has excellent lead tone, and with a simple removal of one preamp tube stage it's become the perfect combo amp with good audio tapered clean gain to 12 o'clock, and picking clean to heavy rhythm at max...but being class A it does fine with the searing solo tone. However the super crunch is not there. No problem, it makes it ideal for pedal boost clipping...you know the jaw dropping biting, grinding formula of adding a Fuzz Face or Vox Tone Bender as a tightly clipped transistor booster fully controlled by the guitars volume knob... back off to clean up and turn up to push past the hard rocking 'clean distortion' for rhythm. Aw' man is it a great amp!!! At any price. AND DESIGNED AND MANUFACTURE IN St. Louis, MO USA. Now I'm very curious what I can do with that spare 12AX7 half. Hmm...an effects loop or SLAVE OUT. I do have a slave chassis (1 12AX7 PHASE INVERTER INTO 2-EL84 POWER SECTION. I can wire CLASS A pp or AB pp and drive the nice 1-12" cab I have my Crate V16 Palomino sitting on. I built the closed back 1-12" cab out of 2 bee box kits (seek out online for $15 ea. free shipping). I glue the cabs back to back AFTER I CUT 2AND1/4"s off of the depth of one of them***, (glue and clamp the larger remaining box to the whole box). You will want to ¶scrap the 2AND1/4" portion *** >*_with it's manufactured inner lip_* [_¶
My combo could have sounded better when I bought it, but I already had the head and it sounded fantastic through a 1922 2x12 cab with rola era greenbacks. so i kept playing the combo until the speaker broke in. All i can say is wow. It's like a whole new amp after the speaker broke in. I'm glad some of you guys gave up on the amps so i could buy one used for cheap. Keep dogging good gear so that competent musicians can buy it cheap!!
Excellent Video,👍👍👍. What a Cool Little Amp, Love the Retro look, Sounds Brilliant. Without sounding too Stupid is it 5Watts? Take care, Melbourne, Australia.
yeah it's not a bedroom amp. I use the head version and I cannot use it pass 2 or 3 :) To have a decent distortion your need a pedal . at full blast it's really loud :)
no mid control - what it like with humbuckers? sounds good for the price but i wouldnt gig with it - it doesn't take much to squish its pre tubes and then you loose your dynamic control (pick attack) and feeling gets Katy?
+Brian Cullen The amp has a mid control, though I think it would be better if the volume control was post phase inverter rather that immediately after the input buffer.
For any one commenting, it not scientific but Bed room or apt get that amp off the floor to at least waist height . you'll hear a lot more turned up a lot less. so if its Shady people your concerned about, walking by or Disturbing Mom & dad in the Front room~ you'll get the Full Rawk or needed fix with that Speaker more @ ear Level ... There's not really space for the amp anywhere up high, i know this... Unless you make a Place for it...Not a Common or Comfortable thing to Do,but the reward to the ears is my point
Hi there just a quick question, when you are saying you can get it for $300/400 that would actually mean a second hand amp, since Marshall doesn't make this anymore? I wasn't able to find out when this little amp were produced? Any ideas? Here in Europe I found some second hand at about €500 for a used one. So what was the it's price new? Any ideas? It sounds great and I was thinking to use it for recording, but I am going to hand build one since they sell ta kit and you can build it yourself which is also a great fun. 🙂
Tube amps are way louder than solid state amps. This thing can hit 120dB with humbuckers. And the Origin 5 has an 8" speaker so it doesn't sound as good.
@wamplerpedals I watched a review about this amp that said headphones can be used with it but I don't see any headphone socket. Can headphones be used with it?
There are 3 versions of same amp... V1 had no headphone out and tubes were covered/recessed, V2 had a 3 piece back, and V3 has a combination headphone/low power mode accessible by a switch on the back.
You wouldn't want to try headphones. It's way too loud, and if you're dumb enough to turn it up, it will destroy your hearing, and your headphones. But anyone that has a head version, and wants it to not be so loud, plug your speaker cab into the headphone jack, it'll cut the wattage way down. But the thing is, the only way you're going to get a Class 5 is used. Marshall discontinued them about 4 years ago.
