You have to be steady with the camera and focused on the project. I’m getting sea sick. Thanks for sharing though I appreciate it. Blessing and keep at it 😄

Your input gear that is on the top half of the transaxle is more than likely stripped and that's why it doesn't move in forward or reverse and it's not a automatic transmission its a single speed axle and speed is changed by the tension on the vari-druve belt system , when you select 5 the gear your actually selecting is not a gear but rather the tension on the belt from the engine to the vari-drive pulley system ! So basically the rear axle is a single speed with a direction reverser gear inside of it therefore forward and reverse but it's STILL a single speed axle ! The gear assembly you were flopping around in there is the forward and reverse gear , it slides on all pin and is activated by the forward and reverse lever on the lol left side of the mower body ! As for the brake rotor they have small pads you have to adjust to have a very small clearance between the pad and rotor when the brake is off and the small clearance allows for more pressure to be applied to the rotor when the brake pedal is pushed down !

So how do you "service" these MTD transaxles? There is not even a grease port.

There honestly probably isnt a way. I was alot less knowledgeable then vs how i am now and these are probably throw away units anyway

@@Xxdayday99 Thanks for responding. Based on what I've researched, these do seem like "throw away" units. The actual differential appears to be riveted together, so you'd need to grind the rivets out to rebuild it and weld it back closed. And the axle itself runs on two sealed cartridge bearings, so a grease port wouldn't do anything anyway (heck even the factory grease does nothing for those bearings). It seems like you just run these rear ends until they break and then either try to fix it or get a whole unit. It's mind boggling to me that MTD don't make these with gear oil in them. It would not be that hard or more expensive to add four axle seals, drain/fill plugs, and RTV the case halves together... They would probably last so much longer.

@cup_and_cone most likely but we live in a disposable world. Most things made, especially cheaper things are not intended to be fixed.

Please work on your camera skills...its a huge loss of points when someone is watching and the camera isnt looking at what you are talking about

I know. My camera skills need improvement i have realized i do better with either a voiceover or just talking while the camera is on a tripod

How do you take apart the differential assembly inside the transmission?
@Xxdayday99
@Xxdayday99 4 года назад
i have no idea. i fooled with it for awhile trying to figure it out but had no luck

@@Xxdayday99 Hm. I somehow managed to bend an axle and am trying to fix it or replace it. I thought if I could take the differential apart I might be able to put a new axle in? Any suggestions?
@Xxdayday99
@Xxdayday99 4 года назад
@@huntersmith4153 i would swap the entire differential. it will save you some headache
@huntersmith4153
@huntersmith4153 4 года назад
@@Xxdayday99 I looked into that. The differential costs around $200 for what I could find. I'm not wanting to pay that much. Would it be better for my wallet to find a junk mower (perferably free) with a working transmission and just swap the whole thing?

@@huntersmith4153 sorry for the late reply i got busy. but yes that would be way cheaper, and maybe even easier

that is the grease they use its like a cv joint type lubricant ,,,,mine is apart and its just like that just saying , my gears are wobbling on the shaft that they slide back and forth no wear any place else ,,,,they should not be wobbling on that shaft , in my view the pinion that goes in between them would slip at some point and make a grinding noise like i am hearing but i am not 100% sure LOL ,,,,everything else apears to be good ,,,,thanks for posting
