Wanted to thank you for an excellent video. I have used one of these as my workhorse for the past 10 years or so, and never had a lick of trouble with it. Then a few months ago it hit Canon's inevitable dreaded "ink absorbing pad is full" warning. I could not find It anyone (including Canon) who was willing to service such an "old" printer (by replacing the pad.) You showed me just what I needed to confirm, ie, that you have to take the printer pretty much completely apart before you get even see, let alone access, the ink pad. (16:55) It was obvious for me to just buy a new printer. Thanks for the insight!
Had a peice of address lable stuck in the paper loading mechanism. as basically stopping the duples function and not able to load to tray (rear was fine). This video help disassemble and find/ retrieve the offencing sticky paper - awesome. Here to another 14 years of use :-)
Canon made it as DIFFICULT as possible to clean/replace the ink absorber. It should be as easy as replacing ink cartridges. Instead, Canon says "throw it away and buy a new one", now with embedded chips so you can't use non-Canon ink.
I am going to take my POS Canon printer apart to see if cleaning everything will make it work again. I get the b200 error and it won't print, yet I have been able to trick it into printing a test page and it prints perfectly. A lifetime of trouble with this machine.
I had a tough paper jam. While trying to clear it, a spring and what looks like a type of plastic lever came out. If I send you pictures of them can you tell me how to put them back in? At first I couldn't clear the jam but the printer ejected it today when I turned it on.
Seems like your printhead went bad. It does that to the printer and it is almost impossible to remove printhead. You will need to remove some covers and remove the printhead. After that you will see the carriage move as it should. You will need a new printhead and that is not very expensive for MX870. The printhead for MX870 costs approximately $30-$40
