You can make free rooting hormone from cut twigs of any willow tree that you soak in water. When they start to sprout roots, it's ready. Willow was used to make aspirin, so it is also an antiseptic. The hormone is in water, so you can immerse the seedlings in it or water it. I hope that this ancient knowledge of gardener from Poland (Central Europe) will be useful.

We use honey in Australia for rooting cuttings. They say not to dip cuttings straight in the container of rooting powder but to empty some in a small lid to prevent contamination of the main container of powder.
@ecogarden3622

We in Europe too, but now honey is very expensive and willow branches are free. I believe that we need to use what is currently most available and does not generate additional costs. Best regards from Poland, you have great gardening education and wonderful native plants. I watch "Gardening Australia".

I did the same thing a few weeks ago, a few of mine were looking pretty shrivelled and it’s always awesome to see how fast they bounce back. I just barely moistened the soil and kept them in the cool so they wouldn’t sprout too soon. For next time, it actually works a bit better if you keep the bottom of the stem (closest to the tuber) and snip the top off.

Cinnamon powder is great for cuttings! Pour a spoonful onto a paper towel and roll damp stem ends in the cinnamon. Plant the stems in fresh potting soil. The cinnamon will encourage the stem to produce more roots, while helping to prevent the fungus that causes damping-off disease

@@NicolesGardenNS it's not a myth. Cinnamon is a natural anti-fungal. There even have been studies done about it (not experiments but real actual studies. Anti fungal properties are so good, that they are testing it to treat candida etc.) If one rather uses chemical stuf, that is a personal choice. I love it when there is a good natural alternative. There are several flower farmers that switched for that reason to cinnamon and love it.

Your dogs play fighting sounds like the Tasmanian Devil! I didn’t finish putting all my dahlias in grocery bags with pine shavings, and I didn’t get all the dirt off all the tubers last fall, it got so cold so fast, my tubers look good, but I wonder should I take them outside (39 degrees) and spray them, divide and dry on a rack with the fan drying them off? I’m going to start some like you are doing. I love this video.

Ooh, I'll have to try this with my pathetic little wrinkly haul of dahlia tubers. I watched a RU-vid video where they sliced a really tiny bit of the tuber off with the sprout. I don't know if it makes any difference. It seems like, with your way, you can maybe get another cutting from the same spot if it regrows. So, can you pot up the mother tubers later in the spring, and later plant them outside?

A quick google search...so you should get flowers the first year? Definitely a great way to produce more tubers. Question: Since you took a cutting from the tuber, is that tuber done? I suppose if it had more than one eye, maybe you will get another shoot. This is fascinating. Looking forward to the results.

Can I ask why you cut and root rather than just planting the tubers in pots indoors til it's time to put outside? Thanks! I left mine in pots for a season and then left them in the pots in our greenhouse over the winter. I have no idea if they are still viable so was going to bring them in the propogation room and see if they bud but maybe I should be considering this route????

I pre-sprout my dahlia tubers in shallow trays so that I don't end up potting the duds. You would be surprised at how much life there can be left in a wizened-up dahlia tuber -- don't assume it's dead unless it literally crumbles between your fingers or is mushy. I am going to try taking some cuttings although I have to admit that I have no shortage of dahlias :)

@FlowerHillFarm
@FlowerHillFarm 5 месяцев назад
I don't wash the domes typically. The trays are hand washed like any other one. I usually wash them as needed. I try to do my best to clean them out after using them so the wash isn't as intense.

I put my trays in the dishwasher after knocking off loose dirt. I did test one first to make sure it wouldn't melt since plastics differ. Mine are from Gardener's Supply. I think the domes would probably melt so I haven't tried those. I generally don't wash the domes if all I have used them for is covering things (sometimes they are called into service as trays).

I REALLY want to TRY growing Ranunculus again, last last two tries were a fail. Second try turned out much better than the first, but I don’t want to spend a lot of $$ and then have then not grow. I have to live on SS so any money spent has to have a good reason to spend it and if I can’t get them to successfully bloom again it’s like flushing money down the toilet. I saw the blooms on a Ranunculus many many years ago and I fell in love with them. It surreal to me how they can have so many papery petals and be so stunning. I have the time now to take care of them but unfortunately they’re a flowering plant that just don’t like me. Maybe, just maybe I can find them somewhere and I can bite the bullet for a last TRY. 🤞🏻❄️🫠💚🙃 P.S. anyone reading this please make sure you are saving enough money for retirement, don’t count on the government to take care of you with the money they were supposed to keep for you until you retired.. I’m old and back then there wasn’t much concern or emphasis on saving for the future. ❄️🫠💚🙃

If you're lucky, maybe a big box store or Walmart or Big Lots will have a mixed bag you can try with. How have you normally tried starting them? Do you soak the corms first? It also takes some patience. And sometimes, sprouting happens differently from one person to the next. I soak mine for 3-4 hours, and I change the water every hour. I have a flat bottom tray ready filled halfway with seed starting mix, damp, but not drenched. Place the corms octopus tentacles down, then cover lightly with more seed starting mix. Leave your tray in a cool dark place until you see sprouts. Only lightly water the mix of it's drying out. Plan on losing a few, but you should be able to get some growing! I have faith in you!
