It's a non-alcoholic drink with sedative effects and an acquired taste that is sometimes described as similar to drinking muddy water. Now an Australian-owned business in Fiji is giving the popular South Pacific beverage kava a flavour makeover to try to broaden its appeal. One of my favourite countries to visit… Fijians are lovely people and it’s a great place to visit…but there are more Indians and foreigners than Fijians living there now…I was invited to a Kava ceremony although it was an honour…it knocked me for six….and I do regularly have a tipple at the fountain at the weekend…the Karva tasted like strong pepper…my lips went numb then from my head down I slowly went numb…but I did get used to the feeling…it was a great experience and a lot of fun…I never knew it was medicinal…so when I visit again that will be my excuse to drink it again 😂

Yaqona wasn't drunk recreationally. The plant was kept sacred and only uprooted for special ocassions. For example, at the cumbersome process of finding a suitable candidate and then installing him as a chief by the elders (Sauturaga) and the priests (Bete).

One of my favourite medicinal and therapeutic herbs, has kept me off valium and benzos for 2 years now had a shell oat night and slept the beat I had in 2 weeks and it's not addictive I have a history of substance abuse and forget I even have the kava in the cupboard sometimes, also so happy to see Fiji trying to push sustainable farming I wish we did the same here in Aus as they are building healthy thriving soil that will provide for future generations whereas here in aus were stuck on contemporary farming with nitrates and phosphates instead of micro and macro nutrients and feeding the soil microbes

What a wonderful initiative. I hope to see this sold as a therapeutic for the modern-day scourge of stress, anxiety and insomnia. It's a wonderful chill herb which I take as needed in tablet/capsule. Great to see Zane Yoshida looking to get into the beverage market!

Best drug ever. Shame it's being commercialised by an 'entrepreneur'... And unfortunate that the ABC decided to talk about it via a for-profit western business. Ongoing colonialism in full flight.

The same could be said about “commercialised entrepreneurial” drug dealers and the profits they make.

Well us Fijians don't really aim for the skies to become something like an entrepreneur. We relax too much that foreigners can just come and be our bosses. Time to reflect on what the itaukei prioritizes. Most Fijians go to school then go back to the village life.
