We're off to Dallas Burston Polo Grounds, and guess what? It's my first time riding Wilma on grass... Seems smart! After all the rain we've had, I couldn't resist entering this cross-country competition when it was put on last minute, even without a proper schooling session. Mum and Han are joining me, some of us are more excited than others.
This outing is all about getting ready for eventing next week. The course at Dallas Burston is known to be inviting and great for training, so it's perfect for this.
Join us as we see how Wilma and Winnie handle their first cross-country run of the year on grass. Will Wilma shine in her grass debut? And how will Winnie tackle only her third ever competition?

Well Meg they were both as good as gold, Winnie was so good she’s very careful over jumps but hell she has a pop in her. I know she jumps too high but you will get her right on that. Wilma is always wanting to please I think she will become one to watch she’s a lovely horse. As always Hannah and your mum held the fort well done ladies Meg is very lucky to have you. Great camera work Pete as always. I’m rooting for you you when the big day comes too not long now Meg. I really enjoyed this vlog.tfs🤗🏇🤗

Poor Hobbit! She takes a lot from you girls LOL! Both mares did great! Winnie is fab. She needs a lot of grid work so she can learn where to put her feet and control and channel that big jump. And she will get more forward--after all, Jam's her mom! But a little caution at this stage is not a bad thing! 🙂

2:00 it’s normal for horses to have 1 horse to stand up and keep watch for some of the herd to lay down and rest. Not necessarily sleep, but just lay down.

Heated seats Meg...that's what you need in a car :D Also my once in a life time horse literally couldnt be bothered with low jumps..he'd just plough through them...they had to be at least 3ft high preferably 4ft...and I also couldnt try and help him with strides you just had to point him at it and let him do it otherwise his little brain exploded ...but the jump in him..holy cow :D

In the herd it is common for at least one to stand while the others lay down. I assume it's a protection thing.

I just want to scream LET GO OF HER FACE Meg. When I was learning to jump as a novice and then training young horses to jump the FIRST thing I learned was to RELEASE over the jump as to not SNATCH them in the mouth hence punishing them for GOING, that is the best way to turn a confident, willing horse into one that balks and ducks out or refuses all together. If you watch you can see the horse raise or flip their head trying to get a release and when they don't get it they then FLIP their head up as they land and they are snatched in the mouth. I see so many riders doing this and it makes me cringe and wince in pain. I am OLD and I know that I learned long ago however I don't think that a horses ability to feel has changed that much. 😢

In through nose out through mouth. I used to breathe hard, too. If you can slow your breathe and think yogo breaths youll find youre hesrt rate stays low even when the adrenaline is high. I have asthma and it took years for me to masker a slow breath in such intense situations. ❤ try not to breathe through your teeth. that's why your breath gets short. In nose put mouth like blowing on a pin wheel xP just some fruit for thought in something i noticed today which i normally wouldnt of noticed lol
