Nice moments (apart from the camera !)...from what I can remember my first ever pillion ride was about 1976 on a Suzuki GT250.....and my 'instruction' was 'hold on and lean with me ' !....am still 'addicted' to biking...summer is coming...enjoy !...

Eons ago when I got my licence the instructor was riding pillion in every lesson, so until I had my full licence, I had never ridden a bike out on the roads without a pillion on the back. The bravery of those instructors getting on the back with complete beginners at the helm...

She did very well, better than some of my passengers did! Many years ago, my most regular pillion passenger was my mother and she was ace! She would jump on the back of my old Triumph 3TA, with a shopping bag under one arm and a mail order catalogue under the other arm and I would hardly know she was there. She would have been in her fifties at the time but sadly, she is no longer with us. Keep up the good mother/daughter work both of you.

Nice one Charlie. The 1st time I took my daughter on a pillion, I told her that I would stop a couple of miles away from home, just to see how she felt, we ended up doing over 150 miles! As for Rodger nor coping with the extra load, last year I chatted to a couple on a Himalayan (both of them were shall we say big boned), they did Wrynose and Hardnot in the lakes with no problem.

Great stuff, my eldest was 14 when I first took him out (pillion on 1200 Bandit!). It really shows you how smoothly you can ride when you have to (still lots of helmet bangs to figure out, especially braking). It also showed up the niggly vibrations that can appear at certain revs (particularly his right foot on the pillion peg - ended up zip-tying loads of compressed foam to it when we went camping in the Peak district the following summer). Your daughter seemed to enjoy it all - another future rider in the making? Congratulations, those are memories with mum she'll hopefully cherish forever.

That's a massive yellow box, lights were green at the start, turning amber approaching second set, is that a crafty way of sending you a bill if you stop in the box or a fine for going through a red if you're slow off the mark.

Great video, and great example of how to introduce someone to riding pillion - taking it easy, giving them signals to use if they want to stop, considering where they are in relation to traffic. Much better than my first (only) pillion experience with someone that wanted to show off, accelerating hard uphill etc, felt like I was going to be thrown off the back. How did Roger do with carrying the extra wait - did it have much impact on acceleration or handling?

Looked like a grand time Charlie. Shame about the camera, can you maybe just replace the lens ?. On another note, I've found that a top box to lean back against makes my pillion feel much safer & ergo more relaxed. Getting on & off more complicated, but does wonders for the riding experience. Your daughter did well for a first timer. Don't know whether you did, but I used to put the side stand down before the pillon got off. That was fun to watch. Personally I hate having a Pax, well hate is a strong word, but I prefer not to have one, My Suzuki boulevard was good for two with the low seating position and foot to ground contact. My Suzuki V-strom Adventure was horrible, almost dropped it first time 2 up as it was just too high for me to balance. The Himalayan is pretty good, foot to ground is good distance is good and it is not top heavy to start with. I find Having a medium size topbox is a blessing. My wife can lean back against the box backrest and that stops the helmet bonking for the most part. Plus the box is perfect for putting a helmet in or other bulky things. I have a Hitchcocks back rack for support. With quick locks it is 2 seconds to remove it to ride without it.

Love it! Once she (and you) are more relaxed/comfortable and she's into the swing of it … take a nice ride out along the lanes and minimise your actions, you'll find her movements will be enough to do most of the "ride", her weight transfer, sighting, shifting, etc will steer, just concentrate of smoothness for your part. I normally find it gave the pillion a real kick to realise after the ride when I explained they were essentially doing most of the "riding" on that trip. Bit of fun either way for everyone to appreciate weighting and countersteering effects. Getting a simple comms system setup is fantastic to make it all more enjoyable/engaging for both also if it becomes a regular thing. BTW, bit of a unique but expensive viewpoint from the 360 ;)

I've taken many people on the back before and since, but your own children are quite different. It was the same taking my son on too. The least stressful was my 60 odd year old Mother in Law who's first pillion ride was around 40 miles and you didn't know she was there! Head butts still occur too sometimes. A heartwarming video. What l wouldve also liked to see was how you instructed G. on what constitutes good pillion behaviour, l'm guessing by the lack of your pillion carrying experience, you passed on the instructions given to you by your Dad or brother when a young pillion yourself? Apart from an errant pillion being a weeble on the back, you know bobbing their heavy head around trying to see and showing off, the worst thing is the helmet clash! This is best avoided by the riders very slick gearchanges, soft initial brake application and in the pillions case learning to place one hand on the small of the riders back when they feel the machine start to slowdown or better still in anticipation of a roundabout or giveway triangle glimpsed over Mummys shoulder. Leaning back slightly with the other hand of course pulling the grabrail. As my Dad said "Sit like a sack of spuds don't try to help nor hinder me, l'm your Captain".

Hi Charlie. If you watch Ryan F9's latest vid about the Honda Ascot he does a quick plug of the Insta 360 and mentions that there's free crash damage repair in the first year. He's in Canada so may not apply in UK but worth a try!

Ha ha, my dauhters 21 and she goes on the back of her dad's bike, but so far shows no sign of want to learn to ride. That look your daughter gave at the end was very recognisable 😄

Loved your video 😁 I took my daughter out last year, and she’s not stopped pestering me since about having a bike( her mum won’t let her though ) I’m just about to purchase a insta 360 x3 , would you recommend it ? Is it easy to use as the GoPro ?

A good pillon you can forget they are there, but never have someone on pillion who has drunk a beer or two ...they will hesitate going into bends, then suddenly try leaning too far... I found that our by giving a mate a lift once, we arrived home safe but it was scary for me.... are you really a mum ? Most mums try to get heir offspring away from bikes ... You have to warn her that motorcycling is quite additive.... Lol have fun .

The best thing about a pillion getting on and off on the left side is you have the sidestand down in case your foot slipped on gravel or whatever. Think safety first, that's the way I have done things when carrying pillion . Nice to see daughter going out on bike with mum. Saw that with my wife with 2 of her daughters although, one of her daughters preferred being pillion on my bike as I went a bit faster. It's not always the boys that like speed. Nice to see you are continually building your skills and knowledge as a motorcyclist.

I watch your channel with interest and I have a question. which bike is more comfortable for long trips like yours to scotland, himalayan or meteor? Greetings from Poland
@restdayrider
@restdayrider Год назад
Hmmmm that's a tricky one. I think overall the Meteor for long journeys. ALTHOUGH, the ability to stand up while riding the Himmy gives the legs a break, and I do love the fluffy sheepskin bum seat my Himmy has. So, personally I'd take the Himmy!

Well done Charlie, its a difference to have luggage in the back then a person. On a light motorcycle you feel more then on a big cruiser. i´m waiting for the next video. Best regards Rüdiger
