I think your observations and take-aways are really spot on and mature. You were so so close to making finals and those margins can go either way really (look at the others who didn't make it) so really all you can do is keep putting yourself in that position and the results will come. Especially since you are travelling around so many beautiful places with their own history, culture and attractions it would be a waste just to see it as if it was another competition and leave without any sort of immersion!
