The "robes" are tallesim gadolim. They have 4 corners, each with fringes (tassels). This shawl is worn such that two fringes are worn in front and two behind. Male adult Jews wear their tallis during religious services. Very observant Jews wear a smaller 4 cornered fringed garment, a tallis katan concealed under their clothing, wearing the tallis katan every day. The very most religious will wear the fringes outside their outer garment even as the rest of this garment remains concealed under the shirt. This commandment to wear fringes is found in Nmbers 15:38-40.
