Clematis is one of the easiest cuttings to propagate. When I pruned my clematis in the fall, I pick the woody part and cut about an inch below the nodes. The following spring the nodes started to sprout! I leave them in small pots out in the garden, where they are exposed to sunshine, rain, snow and wind.

Good for you. Hardwood cuttings can be more reliable but take longer to grow. What sort of clematis are you using this method for?

Hi Maxine I am pleased that you think my videos are helpful. Given how many climate zones there are in the world it is difficult to provide advice that meets everyone’s needs. I therefore base all my videos on my experience of growing clematis in the UK which is a temperate climate. However, my advice on softwood cuttings is that you should take them when the wood is new growth and that happens in the Spring or early Summer only. You will now need to wait until next year when the weather warms enough to promote new growth. Hope this helps

Jeez Ken killer intro and video. I'm just getting into softwood cuttings this year it's super exciting! I wish I had someone to shadow like you haha. My question to you is do you generally need to wait until the shrub or tree or flower stops flowering? Everything is late this year and I'd like to take some dogwood cuttings but it still has flowers

Hi, not Ken but this is one of the best times to take and root cuttings. It'll have enough time to grow roots and get established before winter months.

@@itkahsramal4983 I get frost in about a month, I think it might be late for me? My rains will hit soon

@@chompers11 so do I. But there’s nothing wrong with trying, you never know you might get one that roots quickly. Plus many perennials like to be transplanted in the early fall. I have a lot of transplanting to do this fall, but anyway good luck!
