My tip would be even when you have trained prepare a plan b (for the worst case) My birds refused to go in the carrier and I had to catch them with a net. That necessary follow up visit was only possible because I had a net for the worst case already at home.

Ugh, i just took my new budgie to the vet..a large popular office with a highly educated board certified avian vet. It was an awful experience. They had me put my budgie in a tiny plastic critter carrier to be weighed....he freaked out obviously. Then they didnt know how to handle him because they said there clients with small parrots all have clipped wings. After all that i wanted to get bloodwork as part of a normal annual exam, especially one on a new bird...and they came back in saying they couldn't get it. I felt like i threw money out the window. It was just such a bad experience. Luckily i live outside of Philadelphia so i have a fairly large selection of certified avian vets around me, and i did get an appt at a new one. But im so nervous now....

Hey Sophie! Sorry for this long paragraph but I have few questions! I live in an area where there are not a lot of avian vets, I’ve been trying few vets because I wanted to choose which vet is offering both the least stressful experience and the most knowledgeable avian medicine. I have a lot of dilemmas about that. For example, one vet was specialized in avian medicine, yet told me he hated African Greys (and he is kind of an unfriendly persona), he’s expert in surgery and handled my bird with respect and didn’t stress him too much. Another veterinarian is an avian vet and has been working with parrots for long long time yet saying that the visit experience was unnecessarily uncomfortable and terrifying, I wouldn’t love to come back to her but I do appreciate that she’s very experienced in birds and probably would be very good in diagnosis and treatment. the other clinic which I seriously consider my go to clinic for Chako, is a bigger clinic and is not 100% specialized in avian veterinary but they do have one or two avian veterinarians in their vet staff, and have a lot of avian clients, Chako was mostly checked by the non specialists vets who took wonderful care of him, where he was least terrified and most willing to cooperate (and a bonus is that they told me they appreciated my extra data notes like weight charts, diet and nutrition data, and general care, which is good since I have big anxiety at vet visits and I don’t necessarily remember every little detail about Chako’s care), I wonder if the fact they’re not avian specialized will have a significant effect on how they treat or diagnose parrots. What do you prioritize while choosing a vet for your parrot? Would you recommend trying few vet options to determine who is the right one to treat your flock? Would you recommend prioritizing a pleasant experience as much as medicinal specialty?
@BirdNerdSophie
@BirdNerdSophie Год назад
Hi Guy! From the options you have, I'd pick the first or last one! The first guy sounds a bit odd for hating AGs, but if the experience went well and he was knowledgeable, that's awesome! The last option sounds good too but I would insist on anyone who is handling my bird to be trained or experienced in avian care, so if you can see the one or two vets that have experience then that's great too!
@chrish564
@chrish564 Год назад
Would love a video just about toweling. I have done it and never have the solid hold the vet does because I'm always afraid of hurting them, which then makes it easier for them to hurt themselves. Especially hard with little budgies.

I have one of Patreon, but I’m slightly concerned about putting it on RU-vid as I don’t want people to misinterpret how I’m doing it and then accidentally hurt their birds!

This is a more human question, any calming and grounding techniques for people who experience anxiety at vet visits? I know my bird needs me to be confident and calm in his experience of the vet visit, but sometimes there’s a lot of stress to handle.

It's a tough one for sure! I try and take the approach that I can deal with my emotions after, but in that appointment, I need to be focused so my bird can get what they need! I have no avian vets near me. I wanted a cockatoo as a first bird . I did all the research i know everything until I saw a video saying their bites are bad, they won’t like anyone else, and other stuff. It made me really sad realizing i might not even get a bird. I know everything about them but I’m still in school and still will be for another 5 years. I would also take it everywhere with me but I want it not small. Iwant a bird as a pet because I don’t really like other animals except snakes (I had one and had to be rehomes next day) and chinchillas but are extremely messy and hard to care for. I thought a bird was a good idea but I realized that I have no avian vets near me from what I know of and i want a medium sized bird. Near a cockatoo and African grey. If you know anything of a bird that is near that and bites wont hurt as bad please let me know also avian vets in Southern California. PLEASE I NEED A BIRDDD 😭😭.

There are avian vets in Southern California however id strongly advise waiting to get a bird - they are a lifelong commitment and d if you are still in school, there will be a lot of life changes happening over the next few years! There’s no rush - it’s better to wait sometimes 😊

We would like to see a video on how to prevent birds from fighting and encourage them to get along (not bond if they don't want to) but just get along. We already watched David's video on bonding birds in a neutral space with the communal feeding area and what not and that's really helped. Our birds are more chill with each other now but they still don't like being on the same stand or same surface as each other and think about starting a fight, obviously we step in before that happens and allow them to hang out wherever they want when we are around. We don't force them to share the same stand or space if they don't want to. But if they land on the same thing or one goes to check the other one out or they both land on one of us it'll be like 10-15 minutes of relaxing then one will be all cuddly and try and snuggle the other one and the other will be like "Back off or I'll bite you!" or chases them off the stand to scare them away from "their space" we are perhaps overly concerned and just don't want either to get bit.
@BirdNerdSophie
@BirdNerdSophie Год назад
I will add it to the list! Sometimes it's good to allow them to squabble as long as they aren't going for each other's feet or faces! It allows them to set boundaries with each other!
@SirGeren
@SirGeren Год назад
@@BirdNerdSophie True, we are just really scared of letting them cuddle or get to close to each other now and super paranoid in case they do go for the others face or feet, We don't know when to intervene or when to just let them be. We find ourselves intervening every time they get too close to eachother now, possibly to early out of our own panic.
@BirdNerdSophie
