The transition of seasons; people coming and going; a landscape of a myriad prayers. With a history of over 1,200 years, Kiyomizu-dera Temple in Kyoto has partaken in the FEEL KIYOMIZUDERA project since 2012, which aims to capture the essence of “now,” expressed not only in the form of Buddhist statues and structures, but also in the innumerable accumulated moments and expressions that have and will continue to emerge into existence. This year’s exhibition has presented the work of Takuro Kuwata. By engaging with the centuries-old traditions of Japanese ceramics, Kuwata creates innovative works that have attracted attention worldwide. Entering into a nuanced dialogue with these traditions through his contemporary sensibility, his work brings a renewed vibrancy to ceramic aesthetics. Vividly colored and metallic, unforgettable from first glance, yet faithful to traditional Japanese pottery techniques such as kairagi and ishihaze, Kuwata’s entirely unparalleled visual language continues to gain recognition for expanding the category of what constitutes ceramic work. In turn, the scale of his production has continued to grow over the years. Similar to how prayer is a deed performed as a daily ritual at a temple, production in turn is the act Kuwata as an artist performs day after day. Accordingly, the works resulting from his unceasing production were showcased during this exhibition. “To create is to be driven by the reality that we are living in today, by its encounters and partings, and sometimes by instinctive impulse. Such is an act act of giving form to the process of feeling emotions.” These words spoken by Kuwata resonate with the form of prayer that the FEEL KIYOMIZUDERA project explores. In other words, prayer is more than a simple act of joining one’s hands together; it can be a form of expression, work, or play; the notion of the process of earnestly refining something towards innocence is the Buddhist understanding of ideal prayer. It is also about facing what we express and how we choose to live in this rapidly changing contemporary age. Kuwata has mentioned, “In this this era of globalization and inundation of information, I want to be able to touch something and feel something.” Amidst the ancient history the ancient history of such places of artistic creation as Kiyomizu-dera Temple’s Jojuin and Kyodo Hall, it is a precious opportunity to encounter new moments and possibilities.
移る季節、⾏き交う⼈々、さまざまな祈りの⾵景。1200年余の歴史をもつ清⽔寺に、仏像やお堂といった形あるものだけでなく、数えきれないほどの⼀瞬の堆積を経て存在するさまざまな表情、「今」をとらえ、伝えようとするのが2012年から始まった「FEEL KIYOMIZUDERA」プロジェクトです。2019年のFEEL KIYOMIZUDERAの活動では、アーティストの桑⽥卓郎氏の作品を展⽰しました。桑田氏もまた、⻑い歴史をもつ陶芸の伝統と向き合いながらも、⽬の前にある素材や時代、その時代の中に⽣きる⾃分⾃⾝と徹底的に対話することによって、⾰新的な作品を制作し、世界的に注⽬されてきました。ビビッド、またメタリックな配⾊、そして⼀度⾒ると忘れられない、梅花⽪（かいらぎ）や⽯爆（いしはぜ）といった陶芸の技術に基づきながらも、極めて独特の表現がつくりだす桑田氏の視覚⾔語は、カテゴリーを超えて評価され、またそれと呼応するように、彼⾃⾝の制作のスケールも⼤きくなってきています。本展「日々（にちにち）」では、寺院にとって「祈る」という行為が日々の営みであるように、桑田氏が一日一日向き合ってきた「制作」という行為によって形となった作品群を展示しました。「制作するということは、今を⽣きているこの現実の中で、出会いや別れ、時に何もわからず衝動に駆られ無⼼になること、様々なことを感じた過程が形に現れて⾏く⾏為」。この桑田氏の⾔葉は、FEEL KIYOMIZUDERA プロジェクトが模索する、表現活動を通した「祈りのかたち」と共鳴します。つまり⼿を合わせる⾏為だけではなく、表現でも、仕事でも、遊びであっても、なにかに⼀⼼に尽くし、次第に無⼼へと研ぎ澄まされていくその過程こそが、仏教が理想とする「祈り」であるという考えです。それは変化の激しいこの現代に何を表現し、どう⽣きるのか、ということに向かい合うことでもあります。桑田氏は「グローバルに多くの情報が⾶び交う世の中だからこそ、実際に何かに触れ、何かを感じるものでありたい」と語っています。 ⻑い歴史の中でその時代時代に寄り添い、芸術創造の場であった清⽔寺の経堂と成就院で、新しい瞬間、可能性と出会うことができる貴重な機会となりました。
