TAL J-8 // Roland Jupiter 8 Plugin - Review & Demo

Togu Audio Line (TAL) has released the J-8 plugin- an incredible rendition of the famous and insanely expensive and rare Roland Jupiter-8 synthesizer that was produced between 1981 and 1985. The original price was $5,295 whereas they currently sell for around $23,000 used (and often in pretty bad shape physically).
TAL took the time to do a physical model of their very own Jupiter-8 synthesizer by painstakingly recreating each oscillator, envelope, and filter. They even included the Juno 60 choruses, as well as "service control" and "calibration" panels that let you dial in some additional vintage wear-and-tear on your plugin.
Considering the rarity and going price for these things, having a plugin that accurately recreates the sound as well as let you stack instances and write automation... I think we can all agree it's a great time to be a musician (the original didn't include MIDI implementation).
In this video I don't go through every preset or feature of the plugin, but rather point out some of my favorite aspects of it, as well as do a brief comparison of TAL's Jupiter 8 rendition to Arturia's (must watch if you're deciding between one or the other).
To wrap things up, I'll demo some sounds for you in context of how I make my own music and use a synth like the J-8 in my music- Tech House mainly.
Have you tried the TAL J-8 yet? What are your thoughts? Are you lucky enough to be able to compare it to the real thing? Let me know in the comments below!

Great vid, I’m sold. I love the fact that we can have huge collections of quality synths for peanuts these days. Good times.

Absolutely lovely plugin. This is bound to happen with any plugin recently released, really, but it's doubly true for anything by TAL: the plugin already has a bunch of new features and changes, like the ability to randomize the settings in the service control tab with the use of a "random" button and a knob to control the intensity.

Looks like I need to update! It really is a fantastic plugin. Sound quality is top notch but really ease of use and features seems to take the cake for me these days. The easier it is to make awesome sounds, the more likely I am to use it. Also I LOVE random. I want random in everything

I had a real Jupiter 8 for years until around 1989 when I sold it for peanuts to help finance my awesome Korg M1 🙄 lol. Anyway today I have this, the Roland Cloud JP8, and the Arturia JP8, none of em sound like my real one, for instance the factory patch ‘cars sync’ just lacks the up front balls of the real one, however the plugin is a nice digital synth in its own right, and the effects are much better than what I had back in the day (Roland SDE1000 and Dimension pedal), and this version feels most like working with my real one with its split and layer buttons.
@ScottBrio
@ScottBrio 3 года назад
Ah yeah... hindsight is 20/20 😅 I think going forward none of us will ever trade vintage synths for anything new ever again. Glad you're digging the JP8 plugin. I do think it's one of the best ones out there, and certainly my favorite to use and program. Super easy to get wild yet usable sounds. Glad you enjoyed the video too!

The VCO and X-Mod calibration knob really helps you get the punchy bright sound the Jupiter 8 is known for, and adding neutral distortion and a bit of stereo EQ adds to the warmth.

I prefer it when the interface is modeled after the original keyboard modeled.

Everyone's different! For me, redesigned interfaces are generally done to make things easier to understand which is why I enjoy them :)

This thing is so close to a real one. There is a vid somewhere here where a guy asks the people to guess which is the HW and which is the Arturia Plugin. Most of the people have it all wrong. I only scored 2 on 5, meaning I felt the plugin sounded better in 3 out of 5 cases and the other 2 were just wild guesses. In other words, unless you're a multi millionaire having money to spare you're imo silly to throw 25k to a 40 year old synth that may break any minute now.

TAL Juno 106 is excellent, probably the best I've heard (discalimer - I haven't tested every one) and I own a hardware Juno 106. I see they now have the J-8 and I am very interested given my impressions of their Juno. I agree with you on the Arturia too. I don't hate on Arturia, they do some decent stuff but I think their Jupiter wasn't quite right. U-he Diva is another great option if you're looking for analog synth-wave goodness. edit - and of course there's Roland's cloud subscription too.

@@WestonStephens - I am just listening to some of the sound demos and have a trial license for the Softube Juno 106 model. These sound demos do sound...well rather spectacular. Thanks for the heads up. As I said, I have a hardware model but it's still great to compare where things are in the digital world and sometimes it's just more convenient to grab a plug. Interested to put it through its paces.

@@riloh58 I have the hardware as well and in the past week or so have gotten confused as to wether I am triggering the plugin or hardware. The 106 isn't known for it's harmonic distortion, which is where I feel alot of plugins still lack. Keep it up Softube!

The best review of the Tal-J-8 I've seen so far, and you're spot-on with the note of Arturia being sharper (that's why it sounds more "digital" to me). One thing though, your sounds of choice are terrible dude :) they sound like any generic cheap vst and are a poor representation of what the J-8 can do...sorry
@ScottBrio
@ScottBrio 3 года назад
Glad you enjoyed it! I definitely appreciate the warmer tone of TAL's J-8 too. As for the sounds- to each their own I guess. I'm not a huge fan of big glossy overly effected synth sounds and prefer a more raw sound. Also, each of those sounds were made from scratch within about 5 minutes each- mainly to explore and showcase the capabilities of the synth :)

Both are fantastic. Arturia's plugin is a bit more realistic whereas TAL's looks more like a typical plugin. I prefer the TAL version personally for its ease of use.

Sorry but it does not sound like an analog synth. And not like an analog Jupiter of any kind. You can do modern techno with it, just like with all other vst synths. Therefore most music sounds the same today because the vst and softsynths all sound close to eachother. And that is all fine if you want to produce that music.👍

There are people at the time that complained about the Jupiter 8's crystal clear sound compared to Oberheims and others 😅
@anthinea4495

Ok but we can say "like a true analog sounds like another analog" i use VST and I don't compose techno or electro.
