Very interesting. THANK YOU 🌹

They probably hunted with my grandparents, Lattie and Vivian Gillis,and Ratha Thomas. Also Ratha’s brother Theron. I have a photo of a map drawn on a paper bag of where they camped and hunted in Flag Pond, TN and Madison Co. NC by Winfred Fender about 1935. All the hunters’ names are listed.

10/15/2023: “Mike Snider: A Boy and His Foxhorn” is the name of my article in Bluegrass Unlimited. It appeared in the magazine around the year that Mike won the top banjo prize at Winfield, KS. He recalled that when he called his church back home in tiny Gleason, TN, to tell them he won, the members just nearly “tore the roof off the church” with their shouting and excitement!

10/6/2023: More about the foxhorn! I interviewed the banjo-playing funny man from Gleason, TN, Mike Snider, for an article in Bluegrass Unlimited. Mike said his interest in music began when he was roaming the fields around the family homeplace, and he came up on a foxhorn, picked it up, blew on it, and the rest as they say, is history. Mike’s fans are surely glad he ran up on that foxhorn all those years ago. Pick away!

Yes, I've heard of it but not sure I've been through there although I've traveled that area a lot. I am always amazed at the names of coves, mountains and roads in the mountains and how there are similarities in communities that probably had little contact originally.

What a great job and story. My mom was a McHone, and my family tree is full of Sheltons and Notons. But I'm pretty sure Delane D McHone was not Native American.

I think there are a lot of folks that think they have Cherokee ancestors as there was intermarrying but certainly not to the extent that every family here has that in their background. I know in my own family I was always told there was Cherokee blood but DNA test never bore that out. I guess lots of folks like to think they have those connections to history and a wonderful culture.

Every fox hunter blew his horn in his own distinct way that his hounds were trained to. That allowed for his dogs to know that it was him calling them in. My grandpa was a fox hunter in Kentucky back in the 1920's and 1930's. Funny that they called it "hunting" ... They never did catch the fox, just listened to the dogs run them.
@thefaceofappalachia
@thefaceofappalachia Год назад
So true. I think they just loved having a reason to stay out in the woods with friends and share stories, whether or not they caught any prey!
