Welcome to Atop the Fourth Wall, where bad comics burn. In this episode, Linkara reviews the first appearance of Tony Stark, AKA Iron Man!
atopthefourthwa...
Originally uploaded November 12th, 2012.
ORIGINAL INFO: Tony Stark - Billionaire playboy genius philanthropist… who is obsessed with transistors.
RUMINATIONS: Ah, drunk Tony Stark voice, how I missed you. I actually get the occasional message from people saying it’s offensive for me to do the drunk voice because of people who suffer from severe alcoholism. I’m usually one to agree about these sorts of things (I no longer use bitch as a pejorative, for instance) and am willing to change. After all, showing compassion and understanding for others is important and those who say “words don’t matter” or “they’re just words” don’t understand how powerful words and language are. However, in this case I have to disagree. It’s just mocking drunkenness in general, which affects perfectly healthy people who get drunk. Yes, Tony Stark suffered from severe alcoholism, himself, but it’s not really directed at the fact that they have a problem and need help - just that their speech is usually slurred when they’re under the influence. And especially in Tony Stark’s case, the guy is already such a larger than life figure it gives him a character of his own in my reviews when he shows up. It’d be one thing if I was doing the drunk voice while doing a review of “Demon in a Bottle.” It’s an entirely different thing when I’m having him do the drunk voice while trying to build a robot suit of armor and talking up transistors.

Quick thing on eye teeth: Originally your canines were referred to as 'eye teeth' because they approximately line up centerline with your eyes. And someone without 'eye teeth' would have a hard time eating a lot of foods. So, in that sort of weird roundabout logic, someone willing to give up their 'eye teeth' were essentially making their life harder to trade for whatever it is that is being referred to.

I love how the 2008 movie modernised this story, making it about the War in the Middle East less than Vietnam because the Stark from the movies wasn't even born in the Vietnam war, well, 1970.

Funny you should mention Tony's origin being tied to wars. Apparently Mark Waid's History of The Marvel Universe came up with something called the Siacong War that's supposed to help their floating timescale. Also, Tony saying his suit's going to keep him alive reminds me of another classic song. Domo Arigato Mr Roboto! 🤖

I've never heard the word "transistors" so often in such a little period of time. Note: I study electronics.
@arashimiyazawa8165
@arashimiyazawa8165 4 года назад
The comic was written two years after the inventors of the transistor won the Nobel Prize, right as the Transistor Radio was rapidly replacing the older tube systems, and in the same year that the MOSFET was invented. 'Transistor' was the current 'science magic' word of the day, so Iron Man justifies all kinds of crazy shit by saying 'transistors!'. Just like how cloning was the big new thing at the same time as the Clone Saga was going on in Spider-Man.

One of my favorite ideas is that the guy in Black Sabbath's Iron Man is an actual superhero. Or at least a super powered being, as his heroism seems to have been supplanted by vengeance. He travels in time! He's made of steel! He was altered by a magnetic field! That'd actual make a great start to a tragic villain origin.

From what I remember from a QVC television interview (yeah, they had those), Stan Lee came up with the whole "transistors" thing because of his ignorance of how technology worked. As a kid, he thought that vacuum tubes powered the radio he liked to listen to. So, when he heard about "Transistorized radios," as an adult, he put two and two together. What made it funny to me was that the host of the show was a national science fair project winner and spent years trying to hook up a transistor to an electromagnet, only to keep failing.

Yes, especially if you check Wikipedia and figure out what Tony seems to have forgotten during his booze fueled rampage: transistors don’t work that way. They don’t actually generate their own power, they just amplify or redirect it. Fortunately, Yinsen appears to have snuck a car battery or two into the armor’s design one of the times Tony was passed out.

From the consept of making stories based on sympathizing with hatable demographics is a generally good thing. I wouldn't call Lee a troll for it, really. It's more of a reminder that excecutives and corporates are human beings as well. When activism becomes vigilant, de-huminization of the opposition is a very real risk. I appreciate the kinds of stories that remind us that humanity and who deserves sympathy is not and should not be selective.

That being said, if you compare Spidy's outfit to other daredevil entertainers at the time (such as Evel Knievel) the flowy web wings and patriotic color pattern make a lot more sense.

Few years after the fact if commenting but a little side note... Tony while technically would have the alcoholism part in him already in this story it wouldn't be active and a problem until the demon in a bottle story. At this point and until that story it wasn't a problem yet, and he doesn't spend his time drunk. He pretty much drank at social events and dates, he was never shown to get drunk, and any of the other symptoms of alcoholism didn't develope yet.

I kind of dislike the constantly drunk Tony too. I think he deserves a bit more respect than that. Being so drunk all the time kills impares thinking and kills brain cells as much as liver cells. Part of Tony's thing, like Batmans, is that he is a genius. He couldn't design most of the stuff he does if he was really drunk ALL the time. Some of the modern stuff like movie #2 overplay his drinking I think. Smallvilles Lex Luthor also had a glass of scotch in almost every scene, especially later on, but only the one and rarely to the point of imparing him, only sometimes. I kind of see Tony like that. He likes to have a handy glass on hand, but isn't downing bottles to the point of slurred speech every moment of his life.

Justin Carawan Justin Carmical (Jew Wario) really did die. He sadly committed suicide in January 2014.

Justin Carawan Sorry your asking the wrong guy, sadly I can't even say I was a major fan. I only saw a few videos of You Can Play This and I mainly knew him from his crossovers and the anniversary film and he always seemed like a cheerful guy, but sometimes smile can be used to hid (sorry I feel very inappropriate talking like I knew the guy, when I never did)

Justin Carawan from what pat and Ian said on the cupodcast, he was fighting depression and his wife was outside of the bathroom he was in with him until the end. They didn't say how he did it or anything like that, just that he did.
