Tales of the Far North: Finnish Influences on the Works of J.R.R. Tolkien 

Thank you. This is actually very important for me, as a Finnish person and Lord of the rings fan to hear someone say. Just to recognize the fact that our mythology and language, even the characters of Kalevala have been very big inspiration for Tolkien.

I'm American Finnish and was obsessed with Lord of the Rings as a kid.. I've probably read the books 10 times.. when I was a kid I wanted to learn the language of the elves I didn't realize Tolkien was so influenced by Finnish until recently... one of the best songs ever is Misty Mountain Hop by Led Zeppelin

In Finnish languge, alot of vauels are used. Our best is:" Alavilla mailla hallanvaara." . Meening: " Lowerlands might have frost"

Great video, As a Native speaker of Finnish, i find it fascinating that Tolkien finds my language beatiful and interesting 😆for most of our History our language has been treated as barbaric by the Swedish.

Just as Tolkien borrowed many elements from the tragedy of Kullervo, so did Lönnrot borrow a lot of the Kullervo from Oedipus
