Tales of the Unexpected ‘The Dead Don’t Steal’ Glynis Barber Nicholas Ball

This delightful gem of an episode transports us back in time to the great fun days of the 1980's where the year Y2K was merely a distant pipe dream.
I had just passed my driving test at 17 and owned a blue Triumph Herald convertible, pretending to be Sonny Crockett from Miami Vice. Complete with pink jacket and espadrills - In rural Essex! LOL.
Anywho, in this 'Tales of the Unexpected' episode, written by Ella Griffiths, sees the delectable Miss Glynis Barber playing an air hostess, Oh there is a lord....How pretty is she? Wow.
Filmed just after Dempsey and Makepeace suffered it's untimely and unfortunate end, one can certainly recognise certain characteristics of Sergeant Harriet Makepeace in this episode.
However, many new emotions, never seen on D&M, make a welcome appearance to showcase Miss Barber's multi talented acting abilities.
In real life, Glynis hasn't actually got a twin sister but a younger one called Angela.
I recorded this live on my parent's clunky black ITT VHS recorder back in 1988 and then 25 years later onto DVD when I 'embraced' the internet and YooToob.
Thank you for all your comments. Please let me know if you’d like your favourite episode featured here on this channel. • Tales of the Unexpected

I'm 46 and have been watching Series 5 and 6 off the telly lately. I love it. Really brings back memories. The stories are sometimes a bit dodgy, but in a way that adds to the charm (because they feel like quick dives into social oddness) and they're so deliciously bite-sized at about 25 minutes each. In a weird way, it might have fuelled my interest in playing things like Dungeons and Dragons, where a simply structured 'high concept' idea and a devilish twist are most of the story :)

@Oakleaf700
@Oakleaf700 4 года назад
@Redblade The harassment and aggression was so serious...including court threats {I had a TV licence, but a B&W one} At the time, my son was young, and watching a lot more TV as computers weren't a thing then...but in those days they jailed people for non payment of TV licence that was criminal. They funded paedos like Savile, produce such crap nowadays... The trouble is, the b*stards check to see if you have an aerial...and I do. I think I will look into cancelling it...for something I hardly ever watch, it isn't worth it. Mostly if I watch anything, it is on ''catch up'' and legally one doesn't have to pay a licence for ''non live streamed'; TV... Thanks for the tip! Before I caved in with threats of court and prison ''we know you have a colour TV''...... Seems when a colour TV is sold, they tell the TV licence b@stards.
@Oakleaf700
@Oakleaf700 4 года назад
@Redblade A friend kept her TV in a box...I thought it was because she didn't;t want her husband and kids to watch TV.,...but turns out it was because she didn't have a licence at all... They do now.... because of harassment. TV licence people are some of the most aggressive out there.... very nasty indeed.

Great short story. This reminds me of another story about a true-life murderer who returns the grave of his victim and digs the corpse up. At first, he reckons the body is too close, only 3 miles away from his house. He figures 15 miles out safer. After reburying the corpse though, he can't rest. Gets worried he chose the spot a bit hastily, so goes back to move it to 20 or so miles south instead. A more remote area. For some reason he becomes like a dog with a bone. He moves this corpse seven times. On the seventh grave digging he is finally caught and charged with the murder.

@@Ytnzy250 I don't know much about the case but read about it in Truman Capote's true murder novel In Cold Blood. Apparently the Sherriff/lead detective on that case had arrested that particular man in an earlier murder case. It's briefly mentioned in that novel so if you Google for the detectives name you might find it (Capote became quite friendly with the detective and his wife and invited them to New York in 1960s). The murder itself happened in Kansas, possibly in or near Garden City where the Sheriff/detective was based.

There was an article in one of the Sunday supplements on 16/02/2020 about old TV shows and whether they stood the test of time. This was one of the shows featured and they basically slagged it off. I've just watched this to make my own judgment and, based on this story, it's still worth a watch. I'm sure there were some duff episodes but this certainly wasn't one of them.

I have to say I love retro TV but even with rose tinted specs, this series is poor. Generally the twist in tale is known approx 29 mins in advance and quite a lot of episodes are just unwatchable- almost every US based one definitely is. However, there is some compensation in that almost every major TV starlet in her prime appears in the series at some point. Small but important compensation!

So because he's under suspicion of murder the police steal his car, having somehow turned up a duplicate set of keys and identical key ring, disrupt a ferry crossing, get half the police force out and have a wpc imitate her supposedly dead sister? Sounds reasonable. Wonder if they investigated her drug smuggling activities?

Thought it odd how this episode of this series should pop up on the video list on the right, having not watched anything Glynis Barber was in for a while. Now realize the You tube system must have picked up on You tube recently being used to watch When The Boat Comes In, series 3: in both that series and this episode of Tales of the Unexpected I one Lois Baxter. Amazing how You Tube/computers work!

The sound that powder blue Jaguar makes is wonderful. A deep growl. The registration SWK 1H is still on the DVLA website for a blue Jaguar but there is no MOT history from 2005 onwards. The car was registered on 4/1/1974 and it would have had an M plate when new, as the H plate dates from 1969/70 which suggests the number must have been transferred to the Jaguar after its first registration. Wonder if the car still exists.

*SPOILER * The plot was very similar to a 1940s film I saw on TV many decades ago. A man strangled his wife and left her body in their car Off the side of a road. Kept seeing her after so went back to the car to check on the body and was arrested. It was a setup by the police to catch him. The woman was working for the police. Don't know what the film was and haven't been able to find it by searching by the plot.
