On this episode of People's Party, Talib Kweli and Jasmin Leigh sit down with former NBA star, talk show host, actor, vegan activist, and all-around renaissance man John Salley. With a resume as long as John's, the crew has plenty to discuss. The conversion jumps off with Talib mentioning his first performance on TV being on BET Live -- with John as the host. They talk about basketball not being Salley's first career choice and his ambitions in the arts. He also details being the first to sign Slum Village and J-Dilla to a record deal, the current battle rap scene, and playing on the Detroit Pistons during their 'Bad Boys' years. Fan's of "The Last Dance" will be glad to see Salley dispute the fact that Michael Jordan hated the Pistons.
Later, Salley goes on to talk about his friendship with Eddie Murphy, studying the genius of Richard Pryor, and some of his cameos in music videos. The trio also discusses the importance of black-owned businesses, pro-black vs. anti-white, John and his daughter's cannabis company 'Deuces22', and black superstars who transcended race. They go on to debate reality television and its perceived corrosive effects on society.
Deep into the episode, John speaks on growing up in Bed Stuy, Brooklyn, and then moving to the overwhelmingly Jewish neighborhood of Canarsie. They talk about censorship, and Talib brings up RZA's creative use of sound effects to mask curse words. John also talks extensively about his veganism and why he chose to commit to the lifestyle so fully. He also speaks on the all-vegan restaurant he opened on Compton Blvd in LA, 'Planet Health Compton', and how he was inspired by Nipsey Hussle. John outlines his love for the hip-hop group The Lox, discusses the history of Bad Boy Records, shares stories from his friendships with Diddy and Will Smith, and talks about starring in the film "Black Dynamite." In closing, John shares his upcoming plans for a move to Africa for six months on a mission to explore his ancestral heritage.
It's a riveting conversation with an NBA legend and deeply curious human. Check it!

TIME STAMPS: 1:58 -- Talib asks John if he ever finds old unlabeled VHS tapes laying around that he doesn't know what's on them. John responds with the fact that he has 200 VHS tapes in his garage that he won't let go of. Talib mentions he found a tape recently with his first performance ever on TV, that happened to be on 'BET Live', while John was the host. The trio discuss how the movie industry has changed, schools in Brooklyn, and the Decepticons gang. 8:18 -- John admits to not being a huge basketball fan coming up, having ambitions of being a rapper, painter, actor, or dancer. However with a family full of athletes he felt like he was obligated to play sports. They also discuss Salley being the first one to sign Slum Village and J-Dilla to a record label, John's love for hip hop, and the current battle rap scene. 11:52 -- John speaks on playing for Georgia Tech in his college years, and him being the engine in bringing them up from being the worst team in the country to number one. He also talks about his time on the Detroit Pistons when he was a part of the infamous 'The Bad Boys', and gives us some insight on what it was like playing against Michael Jordan, and disputes that Michael hated the Pistons. 19:50 -- Talib brings John's close friendship with Eddie Murphy and John says that he inspired him to try standup. John reflects on early days of studying the genius of Richard Pryor and his elements of comedy. They discuss comedy coming from pain, John shares some lessons he learned from Eddie, John talks about a cameo in a Luther Vandross music video, and one for LL Cool J, and explains why he asked the producers to edit him out of it. 25:10 -- Jasmin asks John what it was like coming up in an era when black celebrities had to be liked by white people to reach true fame, and to compare and contrast that era to the 90's and 2000's. The trio debate the idea that integration has destroyed black culture, black owned businesses, and pro-black not meaning being anti-white. They also discuss in length John and his daughter's cannabis business, how that came to fruition, and what the true intent behind that venture. 36:34 -- John illustrates the people that inspired his move from the NBA star to the media world. One of the names mentioned being O.J. Simpson. They talk about celebrities like O.J. and others transcending race. Talib also asks John how he navigated his talk show 'The Best Damn Sports Show' without having extensive knowledge of sports, John speaks on how much the sports celebrity has changed, Jasmin asks John about his experience doing reality television, and Talib asks John if he thinks that type of programming has been corrosive to society. The trio debate how much TV, music, and social media influences the youth, especially those from broken homes and don't have great role models. 49:55 -- John talks about his youth growing up in Bed Stuy Brooklyn, and his mom winning a lottery to move into a brand new apartment complex built in the Jewish neighborhood of Canarsie, them being the second black family to live there. They also continue the discussion of parental discretion, and censorship. Talib brings up RZA's creative use of sword sounds to mask ODB's cursing on the Brooklyn Zoo album. John also tells how he got his daughter to leave the nest. 54:35 -- Talib brings up an interview where John said, "I had high cholesterol at 27 years old. I was full of sugar, honey, and iced-tea". John touches on his path of choosing the life of veganism, talks about how people of color get the worst of every disease, speaks on how he views food as medicine, and outlines his regiment of eating only fresh vegetables, seeds, and nuts. Salley also digs into his thought process in regards to animal treatment that's helped him keep the discipline needed in order to maintain this lifestyle. 1:08:14 -- John is asked about the vegan restaurant he opened called 'Planet Health Compton' on Compton Blvd in Los Angeles, largely inspired by Nipsey Hussle and his Maraton clothing store venture. He talks about him feeling the need to provide a healthy alternative to a community that has long been considered a food desert. He also expresses his desire to turn it into a franchise and expand it's reach to as many underserved communities as possible. 1:14:38 -- John talks about his love for the hip-hop group The Lox, and he asks why people slept on them. This leads Talib to outlining the history and evolution of Bad Boy Records, and especially how Diddy and The Lox had to fill the void for Biggie. John goes on to talk about how he got introduced to Diddy when Bad Boy records was first getting started, while John was still playing in the NBA. He also touches on his wine 'Vegan Line'. 1:20:37 -- John speaks of his friendship with Will Smith, how he inspires Salley to remember that keeping yourself happy is nobody else's job but your own, and they discuss Will's son Jaden and his vegan food truck. Then Talib brings up John starring in one of his personal favorite movies 'Black Dynamite'. John remarks on how much fun he had being in the movie, and details how seriously he took getting into character. Talib talks about auditioning for 'Tropic Thunder' and 'Benjamin Button', and they touch on the versatility of Queen Latifah and Common. 1:28:45 -- John gets back to talking about his plans of moving to Africa for 6 months, and attempting to visit as many countries on the continent as possible, with a desire to get in touch with his historical heritage. They also discuss how black people have been programmed to believe that Africa is a place lesser than the rest of the world.

Im so glad they bashed that love & hiphop show cause for years Ive been saying that show is the complete opposite of love and theres no hiphop in it what so ever. There should be a board of members that represent hiphop that comprise of people that had a valuable contribution to the culture from artists, record company executives, Djs/producers, even clothing designers and break dancers. This board should obtain the legal right and ownerdship of the word hiphop so when shows like L&HHNY would either have to change its name or pay a heafty fee to get licensing rights to use it. Im even getting tired of Hot97 claiming to be the home of hiphop but when was the last time you heard any hiphop on it? They should change it to the home of Trap cause thats all you hear. Hiphop has elements they are Music/Rapper/Dj, Dance, Graffiti, Clothing, and slang/swag if one of these elements are absent then you have no right to call it hiphop. Once radio stations sold out to the mainstream beast system they replaced the Dj with programmers that program your mind to force you to like there records made from the beast system by playing it so many times that you catch yoursefl singing them when cleaning or taking a shower. Talib you have the power to make this possible if I was you I’d be outraged all these companies benefitting from the word hiphop needs to pay and that money needs to go to the appropriate people the ones that put in all the hard work to get it where it is today however sadly those people dont have anything to show for it. Wheres Roxane Shante? I saw her Twitter page I think she works at the post office and I have more followers then her, wheres Stesasonic at??? The list goes on and on...

People didn’t like the LOX because their debut album lacked a lot of focus. People in the late 90s didn’t care if your punchlines were great and you’ve sold a million bricks. That shit was trash to us. And to this day, people love Jada and Styles skills, but people can’t tolerate an album full of skills and frills. And on top of that, one of the niggas is an African immigrant, ones father owns a fucking coffee company, and the other one is insignificant. They’re just not relatable to the masses of black people.

I respect John Sally but he's comparison of eating animals to how slave owners see Black people is a little extreme. People have been eating meat way before slavery yo. If you choose to be vegan, cool, but there are ways to not be vegan and still be as healthy even while eating meat. But I do agree on the immense sugar intake of people though, too much.
