He goes into the early days of producing out of his parents' garage, banging out records on a weekly basis, and he also speaks on his 'WoodWorks Records' movement, resembling something similar to what Nipsey Hussle was doing on Crenshaw, slanging hard copies of his music as well as clothing to promote his brand. 7:09 -- D Smoke speaks on his authenticity being a big selling point on paper when he entered the show ‘Rhythm + Flow’. He tells that the most challenging part of the competition, was to remain focused with all the tentative energy surrounding him and the other contestants leading up to performances. 8:59 -- Talib asks D Smoke about how his life changed at age 9, when his father came home from prison. He describes the contrasts of life inside and outside the home, fighting almost everyday he left the house. Then when his father arrived, being urged to channel his aggression in a more productive way through activities like Karate and other sports. 11:50 -- The trio discuss the myth of the black broken home in inner cities, and how that idea is being shattered as a real statistic, but still very prevalent in stereotypes. Jasmin also asks D if Chance The Rapper really didn't know that he played piano, on Rhythm + Flow, as he claimed. 20:24 -- D Smoke talks about one of his mentors being record producer Bryan-Michael Cox, who flew the WoodWorks crew out to Atlanta to write, and produce songs for Genuine, The Pusscat Dolls, Jahiem, Lloyd, Joe and others. 22:09 -- Talib asks Smoke if he thinks that his early introduction to the music industry gave him an advantage on ‘Rhythm + Flow’. He states that he went into that competition not even to necessarily win, but mainly to represent. They go on to discuss the different perspectives of what really defines success, and if winning should always be the ultimate goal. 27:17 -- D Smoke talks about his song "Free" being dedicated to his close friend and first rapping partner -- Chiz, who sadly passed away due to lymphoma. He reflects on Chiz being the one who taught him how to structure raps in a way that brings the listener in. 32:59 -- D Smoke speaks on the chapters of his family's history living in Inglewood, California, and also discusses how gang affiliations are inevitable when growing up in certain areas. 37:57 -- D Smoke explains his frequent use of the word "Latinx", being a gender-neutral alternative to Latino, and Latina. They also discuss the N-Word's usage by Hispanics depending on where they grew up, and also speaking truth to those with false assumptions of a pass to use it wherever they go. 44:28 -- Talib asks D about his Spanish speaking background, teaching it at Inglewood High School, as well as using it in his writing. He talks about learning it in order stop missing out on parts of conversations with his good friends that would frequently code-switch, alternating languages. 51:46 -- Talib asks D Smoke about his pro-black style and how that has drawn comparisons to Kendrick Lamar. Talib starts out asking D about how he's able to make his hustler attitude and pro-black music and personality work in an industry that frowns on it. D explains he has always worked to not compromise his pro-blackness even in the face of opposition, and he looks at how people have pointed to similarities between him and Kendrick. He then goes into how those comparisons always hit artists who stand out on their way into the industry. That is until they prove themselves. 56:33 -- D Smoke is asked to reflect on how his teaching Spanish and music theory at Inglewood High School has informed his artistry. He also defines what makes a real teacher as opposed to someone that goes there to simply put in the hours and collect a check. 1:00:12 -- Talib asks D Smoke what unique issues do teachers of color face dealing with marginalized communities. D responds, that teachers of color are not there just to teach, but to alter long-standing toxic paradigms that have plagued their communities, as well as to create as many opportunities as possible for them to succeed. 1:07:42 -- D Smoke talks about his memorable Snoop Dogg face-off on 'Rhythm & Flow'. D is asked to explain exactly what happened in the moment that Snoop asked him "Where you from though?" He thinks that Snoop could pick up on him being from Inglewood because of the energy and authenticity behind D's art, and Snoop was moved by it. D then goes into Snoop's energy and agrees with Talib that their 'Rhythm & Flow' exchange was unlike anything seen elsewhere on TV. They bonded in that moment, and D says Snoop has been his biggest ally in the game ever since. 1:15:14 -- Talib asks for D Smoke's take on Cardi-B's perceived growth as a judge on ‘Rhythm + Flow’, from someone solely concerned with marketing tactics, to really respecting the process, passion, and craftsmanship of these artists. D explains that there's much more to Cardi-B's creative abilities than many give her credit for. He's so dope. To hear his path is so inspiring to younger people and shows them that you can be multi faceted. You can be a college graduate, teacher, writer/producer, artist, speak another language fluently, and still have respect in your hood. I literally seen the first two or three episodes of the show and already knew D Smoke was going to win. Then I just went to the last episode and proved myself right.

I work in behavior intervention in a high school so when a student needs to be redirected I take that same approach like “bro you good “ to “ yo talk to me “ kids want someone to listen . Telling kids they can be whatever they want and opening them up to life outside their arena is a great gift .

An embattled survivor of Brooklyn's gutter life who pens reflections so exquisitely grim , all while working his redemptive life as a FDNY captain is imo one of hip hop's most interesting real life stories .
