STORYLINE:
Afghan Shiite Muslims on Tuesday gathered in Kabul to commemorate Ashoura, a remembrance of the 7th century martyrdom of the Prophet Muhammad’s grandson, Hussein, that gave birth to their faith.
Over 1,340 years after Hussein’s death, scores of faithful joined ‘funeral’ processions of chest-beating and self-flagellating.
The Taliban-run government-imposed limits on mourners and prevented them from beating themselves with knives and chains publicly.
"There were some restrictions this year. There was an order from the vice and virtue (morality police) that the boys (mourners) shouldn’t beat themselves with knives (publicly)," said one of the mourners, Habibullah Bashardos.
Shiites make up an estimated 15 percent of Afghanistan's population of around 30 million; most of them ethnic Hazaras.
Followers of Shiite Islam represent over 10% of the world’s 1.8 billion Muslims and view Hussein as the rightful successor to the Prophet Muhammad.
Hussein’s death in battle at the hands of Sunnis at Karbala, south of Baghdad, in 680 AD ingrained a deep rift in Islam and continues to this day to play a key role in shaping Shiite identity.
