It's been a joy watching Emily go from "Pedals? What are pedals?" to "That's a good smelling pedal."

A talk box is basically like a manually controlled wah pedal. With a a wah pedal, you can only do the "wah" syllable, or some version of it, whereas with a talk box, you can use the shape of the inside of your mouth to make any syllable sound you can think of. People often combine them with expression pedals just like you would control a wah pedal. You don't actually have to "talk" into it and say words 😆

This is now the gold standard of pedal review videos.

"Do You Feel Like We Do" by Peter Frampton is the quintessential talkbox track. It's a pretty neat tool because if you're good at it, you can use it to sing and not have to worry about finding the pitch. Swatkins is really good at it.

Watching you explore just how far the harp can be taken as a musical instrument is always a joy. I wonder how many of the techniques you're inventing in these videos will become popular in music?

The final track gave Radiohead's Kid A vibes. I genuinely think the talk box can be used musically, with intent, just like vocoders or autotune tracks. Nice work!

I love this. The channel in general. For someone to just send her a pedal, she decides to try it for her RU-vid channel on a whim, that video blows up, and suddenly she has a successful RU-vid career experimenting with guitar effect pedals with a harp. Amazing.

If there's a way to combine this and the Fart Box to make talking farts come out of your mouth, that would be the zenith of comedy.

I believe the “Talk Box” was originally designed for laryngectomees (people that have had their vocal chords removed, and they cannot create sound). The Talk Box was a way to inject sound into the oral cavity (mouth). Then, like you did, they were able to speak/talk. The tubes they used were smaller than the one that you had. 🤔

Imagine searching for harp music to help you sleep and come across this! Needless to say, I didn’t sleep well from laughing so hard…

The Talk Box goes all the way back to the early '70's, when it was first called the Fuzz Bag, used by guitarist Jeff Beck(RIP). Then it evolved into the Fuzz Box, when artists like Joe Walsh and Peter Frampton started using it not only in the studio but live, as well. It's one of those peripherals that's been around forever yet, very few people know about it until _someone_ turns it into a hit machine again.

I'm glad the algorithm sent you to me. I needed a person holding a harp softly shouting swear words into a tube today and there are very few videos that satisfy that specific need.

Now THIS is tube tone, and dare I say the true voice of the people. Today's episode confirms my suspicions that the Poly Blue Octave is secretly a harp pedal that just happens to work on guitar/bass, it sounds so darn good with the attack and the harmonics of the harp, especially pleased with how the in-built modulation works on these sounds. Plus I love seeing what makes you guys laugh your collective ass off ("what is this") and what cool stuff you come up even with something as simple as a volume pedal. "What do normal people say into a talk box?" hate to break it to you but the moment you put a speaker into a hose into your mouth uhhh normal's not even in the rear-view mirror because the figurative vehicle is a dune-buggy made out of a lawnmower, paperclips, the healing power of Shrim, and friendship. I'm a big fan of how the MXR Talk Box in particular has made the whole tube-in-your-mouth thing a bit more doable and honestly safer because prior designs you had to put the talk box between an amplifier head and speaker cabinet, so you were taking the full volume of whatever volume your were sending into the speaker cabinet literally right in the teeth and if the talk box stopped working your amp head would explode; some talk box users even have a separate amp and pedal chain just for talk box in order to minimize potential snafus. Much love and remember that pedals ain't shit but hose and tricks.

Talk box doesn't necessarily need talking; it's just named as such due to the way it's operated. It is, however, intended to let you use your mouth to change the sound of an instrument with whatever shapes you can make with your mouth. Glad I watched this. Don't believe I've ever heard someone make a classical harp swear before. =)

"Cause when you talkbox this is what you do: You play your notes on your "harp". What you play comes out of the tube not the other way round, which is a common misconception. So to clarify: No, you're not singing, you make the lyrics with your mouth but you cannot use your vodal cords, which is hard, which is hard." :D

That volume pedal with the reverb, into the talk box with a bunch of non-lexical vocals like "whoa," "ooh," "ahh," and other filler words could make for an interesting layer in a song

I think you should've gone with "my name is Emily and I'm here to say, I'm here to harp in a harpy way!"

Hey Emily Hopkins and Russ! Thanks for that joyful vid! The talk box was made world famous by Peter Frampton on this epic live 1976 double album "Frampton comes alive!" The big hit song was "Do you feel like we do?"! Ride ride ride!

These two were clearly the trouble makers in the classical music class! 😁 Seriously though, when she got to the pedal - the very first part sounded like music out of the movie Blade Runner. This deserves serious artistic exploration. The sounds coming out are awesome!

Is anyone here from the 70s when Peter Frampton made the Talkbox famous? He wasn’t the first to use it, but he certainly was the most well known for it. ✌🏻 The entire thing Emily was checking it out, I couldn’t get Frampton out of my head! So I had to jump around and watch a few of his videos❤

Talk boxes have been around for at around 50 years. First time I heard one was on either "Rocky Mountain Way" by Joe Walsh or "Show Me They Way" by Peter Frampton.

So. Much. Fun! That was seriously the most enjoyable pedal demo ever. Your laughter is infectious. So many innuendos.....

I can only hope that this leads to increasingly convoluted interfaces showing up unprompted. Emily figuring out how to hold the tube in her mouth is on my list for best things of '23.

I think my favorite use of a talk box is on Alice In Chains "Man In The Box." Unlike other more famous examples of talk box trickery where it's used to create a signature part the AIC song uses it in a subtle way that makes the whole track sound thicker and beefier.

This video popped up on my feed for the first time (Never come across the channel before) and I honestly have to say it's one of the funniest things I've seen in a long, long time!!

You were genuinely having a laugh there! Actually, the tube is supposed to be secured to the microphone using velcro strips. Thus, you can fully open your mouth without the tube falling down 😁 Check "STEVIE WONDER - TALKBOX" here for a great example of knowing what to say with the talk box 😉

Never have I laughed so hard or clicked "like" so fast, Emily (and Russ). I only know about the TalkBox from Alice In Chains using it once...but it's hilarious on harp!
