While I haven't seen this movie, I figured that the hand is basically a metaphorical monkey's paw. I'm glad that they decided to go an unexpected route.

Okay, now I need to see this movie. Watching horror movies growing up, I had a tendency to imagine how it would turn out and be disappointed in the conclusion, to the point I scared myself more than the movie. I get the feeling this is one of those movies that’s going to outdo my imagination.

I saw this film at Overlook Film Festival in New Orleans, where it was the Secret Centerpiece Screening. Without going into spoilers, I know EXACTLY which scene you're referring to at 12:45. Trust me, that was the scene that got the biggest reaction out of my audience there, and is currently the horror moment to beat this year. And actually, when trailers came out for this (as they did after I'd already seen it), that was the one scene I was BEGGING to not be shown in any of them, as I wanted general audiences to be as surprised as I was when it happened. And I'm so glad they didn't include it.

Seen this one twice already, probably my favourite horror of the year (infinity pool and evil dead rise are close seconds). although I laughed when my friend who I saw it with text me later to say "remember in the movie when that girl was absolutely cemented by a pillow?", for some reason that was so loud in the cinema. Also Sophie Wilde is so good, I hope she's in more things

Australia makes great horror movies because we are a terrifying country.

There’s something I’ve often said about Australian Vs. New Zealand horror movies: Australia makes the horror movies scary, New Zealand makes them funny.

'Next of Kin' from 1982 is especially good in terms of psychological horror.

i really enjoyed your review. this movie unnerved me, which is something not many horrors do for me. what was also refreshing was the horror came from a place removed from the usual fare- there was no explanation for the occurrence, no allusions to weird native curses or some long dead serial killer or ableist ohh scary disfigured person or inbreeding. The young cast was awesome, the best friend seemed so familiar to me- like a mix between lorde and thomasin mackensie. Being from New Zealand this felt close to home and the banter was on point. The make up nailed it- an uncanny demonic makeup during possession that adds so much with so little, to the rotting decayed impression of those souls trapped in the dark, was very well done- reminded me a little of the oozy decaying ghosts from The Frighteners. The dog scene had me horrified, and the fact everything was being filmed was a great device for adding to that dread. the embarrassment and social repercussions were much more a scary threat to me in that moment than the possession of the poor lad, but also we have moved past the ole "exposure is the end of the film," like, pre social media the "uncover the truth" trope was very strong, but i think we are all past that these days, living with the awareness that everything moves so fast online that aliens can be confirmed as real and we all swipe up to the next video, but also the lasting repercussions of being "cancelled" and the digital footprint that goes hand in hand with clout chasing. I agree fully that i cant wait to see what's next from these creators

It is great to see them use their RU-vid experience to enhance their skills rather than as an ‘easy’ launch pad to fame.

Australian horror has been popping off. That's almost enough to sell me on it alone lol. Did you ever see the movie Relic (2020)? Another Aussie horror from a young director. I loved it.

I did, saw that at LFF digitally, although I didn't review it as it was out for a while by that time. It was pretty solid, although worked more as drama than straight-up horror.

Finally got around to seeing this one, life just got in the way for too long. I agree so much with you about the POTENTIAL on display here by the cast and crew. I really hope the directors continue to hone their craft, because there is greatness close at hand (ha) with this film. I think it would be a perfect starter horror film for younger audiences, like 14-21. It's got that great cautionary tale aspect to it but doesn't come across as preachy. It's interesting enough in concept but not too complex. And yes definitely scary! It's certainly better than most of the "teen horror" that i grew up with in the late 90s/early 00s dominated by slashers.

I thought Alexandra Jenson who played Jade was great too. I hope she gets better roles in the future.
