Glad to see the Talkcast Podshow back after a lengthy one-month absence, and with Kenobi to boot. Though I’m hoping that you and Scott can do an episode on Ms. Marvel once it’s finished, since it’s honestly surprising great imo.
Obiwan and Anakin is what people wanted and so of course the show runners shoved baby Leia and Luke into this as well as a new character that no one cared for. Why are show runners so allergic to just giving the people what they want?
Because you can't make a whole 6-episode show out of just Anakin and Obi Wan, unfortunately. There just isn't enough plot between those two characters alone to fill out like 5-6 hours of storytelling. At the very least you need some kind of B-plot if only to justify the runtime. Problem is they came up with a pretty lackluster B-plot and an even worse C-plot. If this was a 2-hour movie instead, then okay, but for some reason they wanted a show.
@@magneto9210 and that's the crux. They need quantity to fill out the year with new content and so the quality suffers from filler and plot contrivances to artificially expand a story. The fans aren't happy and the franchise loses its luster. Nobody wins.
I liked the show lol though I do agree with the sentiment that I'm tired of delving into this limited span of time in the Star Wars universe and focusing on the the same legacy characters. I would love to see something moving forward past all this or something further in the past during the Old republic Era when jedi and sith were more present. shoot even like an origin story to the first jedi and sith. really just anything else but the same period of 100 years or so that we've been digging in this past 45 years
I dont understand this obsession with needing to not know whether a character will live or die. Like how do y'all enjoy entire genres of media where characters dont routinely die? Do you just not?
Kenobi is a show that felt rushed, was very poorly written, had no characters that I cared about and a narrative that was *SO* contrived and convenient, NOTHING was resolved and ultimately if you skipped it you came out net positive. You could have called Revas character arch from before even watching the show. It's just a waste.
The trouble with Disney’s obsession with the Imperial period is that, for all its innumerable flaws, Revenge of The Sith does an incredible job of eliminating loose ends.
I enjoy this series for the what it is. The flashback with Anakin and Obi-wan sparring was a highlight for me. Seeing their ep 2 outfits and lightsabers is a delight. But, they need to hire a better Camera guy the shaky cam is horrible in a lot of shots.
The scene where Vader tells Obi-Wan, 'You didn't kill Anakin, I did,' I saw that as a brief moment where Anakin broke through to tell his old master not to regret his past actions & to keep moving forward. That despite everything that happened, in the end it was ultimately Anakin's choice to walk the path he did, & HE is the only one to blame.
21:15 this is why in prefer the Lego Star Wars version of Rise of Skywalker it made that movie at least bearable for me. Top moment had to be Ben calling out the Knights of Ren for sneaking around, because they were useless in that movie and Anakin and Yoda telling Rey they both hate sand.
I was excited about Kenobi because it was adapting "The Last of the Jedi" book series that started with "The Desperate Mission". Star Wars content doesn't always need to progress the universe or plot forward the way the MCU does, it sometimes just tells stories. In this case it's a story about Kenobi coming to grips with the loss of his people, his best friend, his entire world; the series definitely had some contrivances but overall I thought it was very good in communicating the point and is my favorite piece of Star Wars content since the Clone Wars show. Considering the books kept Star Wars alive for years between movies, there were clearly stories people liked. If they continue adapting them with the care they deserve I think we'll finally have good Star Wars again some day.
The funniest take with the Grand Inquisitor and Reva thing I've seen is the other Inquisitors and the Grand Inquisitor doing an Impractical Jokers skit with Vader on Reva.
Obi Wan was weird to me because it was a collection of things I've seen before, retooled to star Obi Wan. Swimming into the fortress to break in was done in Fallen Order, Vader's mask being damaged and letting out a small glimpse of Anakin was done in Rebels when he fought Ahsoka, etc. I like it, but I couldn't help but think I've seen this stuff before.
This show was the Merriam-Webster definition of mixed bag. The more they try to fill in the gaps with main story characters, the more they risk fracturing or outright shattering Canon. They don't shatter anything here, but they sure do bend the heck out of it.
There were a couple of nuggets in this show that were nice, and at least I don't feel robbed of my time for watching it, but this show is probably the last show that I watch just because it's Star Wars. They've burned too much of my trust, and frankly, I don't need it. There is plenty of Star Wars out there. And to be honest, there is a good Kenobi story out there. It's a Legends book called Kenobi about Kenobi adjusting to his new status quo and getting used to not being a big bad jedi while dealing with a relatively minor issue involving tuskens, a corrupt business man, and a town that's stuck between it.
*Community to Reva:* “I was hoping for Kenobi. Why are you here?” That being said, Reva being like what Vader used to be was fun. She was like a competent Team Rocket. Just wish McGregor got a bit more screen time.
I love these talkcasts. You guys always talk about stuff that I kind of "felt" but couldn't quite articulate. And this time I actually finished the content in question before the related show came out! Usually I wait like 3 weeks to watch movies so I wait until after I've seen it so I can just go through the spoilers parts as well. Regarding this, it really was kind of hard to get past the "literally none of this can matter". It wasn't bad to watch, but it felt so pointless. In a MASSIVE extended universe with borderline endless potential, why would you write a show where you can't be too creative or interesting?
Hey, good episode guys, but the audio balance needs some improvement. I could barely hear a word out of Quinn at all so I had to turn up the TV, then the Austin Powers clip came in and it woke up my parents in the next room lmao.
Reva was very confusing but i think what they were going for at the end was she was pissed when she found out there was a kid being protected by Obi-wan. why should this kid be protected and my friends were killed? Maybe that's it? No idea, but thats what i got from it. I only think that because she asked kenobi "where were you when vader was kiling us?"
IMO: The Tusken Raider arc that Boba Fett had, should have been Kenobi's. This series should have been about him reflecting on raising Anakin and the Clone Wars, while losing faith in the force as he sees how terrible the people of Tattooine have it, and watches the degradation of the Galaxy under the rule of the Empire, while being powerless to do anything about it. Then as he's wondering into the desert, to bury the pair of lightsabers he's been hiding, a sand storm comes and he gets lost and blacks out, and wakes up basically where Boba Fett wakes up, tied up in a Tusken camp. Have him go through the whole arc Boba did, but have parts where Obi Wan is becoming truely horrified about Anakin, and how he's fallen, after meeting, humanizing and becoming a part of the Tusken tribe. This would give more weight to Obi Wan ttuely believe Anakan is gone, and only Vadar remains.
The exchange between Obi Wan and Anakin at the end was easily one of the best things to come from Disney’s Star Wars. Id much rather have a mediocre show/movie with awesome moments than one that was consistently just ok throughout.
I would have agreed... If Obi Wan didn't just leave him there. The logical conclusion was to off Anakin right there because of how dangerous he is, and the emotional solution to just leave him there doesn't function, because both of them end up agreeing that Anakin is dead and only Darth Vader remains. It's a case of the writers desperately wanting a scene to happen despite it being impossible, and pulling through anyway by breaking the story. It's wonderfully acted Ewan and Hayden deserve all the praise for that scene, but I blame the writers for choosing such a lazy route.
"Reva was the most compelling character" Stephan lost me real quick with that one. Finished watching the show with friends and despite really trying to like it we ended up just wanting it to end. I get lightsabers don't kill you if you are angry enough but she was able to survive it twice and one of those was as a child?? and what does she do to get revenge for the killed jedi? KILL MORE JEDI OF COURSE! Slice that old lady's hand because fuck it I am totally evil and will kill so many other innocents but it's ok guys, I fought that bully at the end so that means I'm good and relatable. Somehow finding the exit of the secret tunnel, somehow being the only one to put together a bunch of random information, somehow forgiven after literally letting Leia and Kenobi escape when soldiers have been killed for less. Kenobi didn't betray her, she didn't want to co-operate, that's why she started slicing the door and Kenobi had to run. Also that FUCKING FENCE SCENE. It has nothing to do with Reva, but I can't stop thinking about it. They made Kenobi exceptionally incompetent in this series, he was a damn general and gets outdone by a 6 year old
16:24 is where Kenobi talk starts. Edit: ....and audio is fucked from 57:10 honnestly surprised they felt it was still worth uploading. I get your burned out on content, but c'mon still should have some standards y'know?
the explanation i like for why vader let obi wan go after the fire is that vader wasnt satisfied. it didnt make him feel any better so he let kenobi go to savor the hunt for that much longer
I will say, as much as I liked physically seeing Liam Neeson again, that busts actual canon wide open. Quigon can't show up physically, he didn't finish learning how to when he was alive. He could send his voice to people, but that's about it, barring his appearance on the planet of Mortis, but that place was all sorts of crazy in the first place. So then that means he finished his training AFTER DEATH. That, combined with TROS, tells me one thing: Jedis shouldn't stay alive, that just makes them weaker.
@@Max-zg6ld You're right, Obi-Wan did say that, but he also didn't reappear right there and tear Vader a new one. The whole point of his "power" after being killed was that he could guide Luke in his times of need. That culminates when he tells Luke to use the Force, when he speaks of Yoda on Dagobah. Even then, he isn't omniscient, as seen in ROTJ, he only tells Luke to kill Vader, when Luke sees another option. But in Disney Canon, he should've just shown back up and DBZ thrown Vader, down a shaft of the first Death Star. And deal with Palpy too, wherever he was during ANH.
Nobody wants to remember resistance, every new starwars product gets hate for one reason or another but resistance is the only new show that is demonstrably bad, the rest only reach mediocre at worst
@@pillarsofsnow7940 I don’t know as a show yeah it’s pretty lackluster and I hate Kazuda with a burning passion. But, it’s better than the rest of the sequel movies in my opinion.
59:56 I think you've got that the wrong way around actually. I think they did the rocks again _because_ people complained about it in TLJ. Same with how they kept trying to make "burying lightsabers in the desert" a thing. Much like how TCW retroactively makes RotS less shit, I think this show is trying to make the sequels retroactively less shit. Which, fair play to them, it totally worked for TCW so they might as well try to pull that off again.
Honestly I loved it. Had fun watching it. Love episode 6 with that fight and the emotional Kenobi saying sorry to Anakin. Would of been nice to hear Vader taunting Kenobi he has the high ground haha.
I really liked the portrayal of young Leia in this show, her scenes with Obi Wan were second only to the scenes with Anakin for me. The show itself was very messy, but I think the main redeeming factor was having Ewan and Hayden back and the fact that they both clearly gave a shit about the characters.
@@wcthesecret People that like to pick things apart? I get that, but this for me was better Star Wars content than roughly 90% of what Disney has given us thus far.
@@wcthesecret I’d be VERY careful walking down that path, dude. Given what’s happened concerning the actress that plays her and the subhumans that attacked her, people might very easily get that vibe from comments like yours. Not saying there is, but people read into stuff like that. Personally, I have mixed feelings about Reva. She’s not quite as bad as Vader, but I still dislike her for stuff she’s done/was going to do. Honestly, I’m a fan of the prequels, so I was always going to be a little biased about this series.
@@magneto9210 their pulling from the legends books and comics for source the movies failed cause the CEO of Disney said they were redoing the parts of the series so those movies are the GT of star wars.
I personally feel like this is the best Disney Live Action Star Wars. Mando was good but with how they've handled Grogu I'm just a bit meh about it. But here we had a lot of fun and while Reva was questionable at best I think at the end I quite enjoyed her. at least until the last little bit with her. Kenobi, Leia, and Vader pull this show and it's only for them that I watched it. all in all an 8/10
This show has two of the best lightsaber fights of all time and the best use of Vader’s force power seen outside of video games. Leia had to explain about her father knowing Kenobi in A New Hope because the last time Obi-wan saw her, she was a kid. Leia didn’t know how important she was. She didn’t know that Kenobi would remember her as well as he did.
Spoilers: Ian McDiarmid 🫱🏻🫲🏼 John Krasinski Actors who clearly didn’t want to be involved but Disney put enough zeros behind their check to do a cameo
