We interview JonnyGuru (Jon Gerow) at Corsair's HQ to talk about power supply reviews, showcasing some PSU testing equipment while there.
Ad: Buy Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut on Amazon goo.gl/pygud5 (or their standard Kryonaut on Amazon goo.gl/8ySAVs)
We talk about catastrophic power supply failures, what makes a good power supply, voltage ripple, and other PSU characteristics with Jon Gerow of Corsair (founder of JonnyGuru). This also marks the start of GN's exploration of power supply testing, which we can now do with some high-end PSU testing equipment. We'll need more time yet to explore this testing approach, but we will get there. Our goal is to produce detailed power supply reviews for both YT and written articles, as we find them lacking presence in general on the web.

I started paying attention to JonnyGuru's reviews after I had an Antec PSU cut loose and catch fire in my case. To their credit, Antec was pretty cool about it and offered to RMA the unit even though it was past warranty, but I went with a Corsair instead.

Ye I started paying attention myself after my brand new Intel platform was randomly crashing on idle. I then realized that certain PSU's could actually damage your hardware over time and that quality actually mattered.

Ripple measurement was the single most selling point of me purchasing an Enermax EVO Galaxy 1250 in 2009. So clean. Never an issue, especially in a town that was once notorious for brownouts. It was the best 350 bucks I ever spent. There's a reason why you can't find these PSU's on the second-hand market. It's a keeper.

I invested in a fairly beefy UPS that feeds a constant 120v to my PC. I never noticed how bad my power grid was until I kept hearing my UPS beep to indicate it turned on the battery.

You're fine. I used to have an R9 290X which is far more power hungry than a 1070 on a VS550. Other than PSU getting audible (still drowned by the reference 290X cooler, obvs) under high load it worked without a hitch. oh, my CPU is 2500K at 4.8GHz, I also have two 3TB hard drives with I think 5 platters each, so they quite power hungry as well so yeah, a 1070 is fine on a 550W PSU

Don Guru de Bro Corsair, like many psu companies, have their low tier, poor manufacture rebrands, and then they have their good psus from good manufactures. The AX1500i is one of the best psus you can get. You just have to look up JG reviews (you see people mentioning the sticker colors because they come from different manufactures)

It will be nice to have a bit more objective information instead of having to to rely on reviews by users who are just as clueless as the people asking. Not only that, but I'm glad this will be reviewed instead of a sixth rbg gaming chair like in most other youtube tech channels.

Long time watcher, first time commenter -- I just wanted to say that the title to this video literally made me sit up in my seat. When I saw "JonnyGuru" in the title, it made me so happy because I have been an avid JonnyGuru reader for about 10 years now. I love his methodology, he's always thorough but straight to the point with a bit of fun added into the mix. I am beyond excited for the folks at GN to start reviewing power supplies and I cannot wait to see what you have in store for the future. Edit: I've based all my PSU purchases since I started building off JonnyGuru reviews. A++ source and always my go-to. I look forward to seeing the same level of quality and professionalism from GN as I've come to expect from them having been a subscriber for some time now.

Easy to Understand PSU Electronics for nubs, laymen and noobs from an E/E Engineer: 110/240V goes in, Passes through a transformer (reduces the voltage) & bridge rectifier (4 diodes in a diamond which changes AC to DC). The transformer will have multiple "tapped" voltages, giving you the 12V, 3.3V & 5V buses inside (a "bus" is basically a common conductor). This then passes through capacitors and inductors (capacitors are usually electrolytic tall and black, and stick of fish when they pop, inductors are coils of insulated wire around an iron core or ceramic). Then you plug your cables in to your components. Different companies add in various other things, some proprietary, to give you added features, deal with frequency (ie: if it has a built in switch to change from 50 or 60 Hz), use of Integrated Circuits (ICs) to cut down on component count and improve power factor (an efficiency measurement that has no units). Smoothing helps flatten out the DC voltage. A full bridge rectifier won't completely get rid of ripple. Diodes act like a valve, and if you've ever used a garden hose, you know they still leak a bit. This is basically "ripple", in short. And if it's too high you end up with instability & unstable clocks. You can use decent, off the shelf components, LEADED solder (as it doesn't bloody fracture, split or break like lead free shite) & a local cheap PCB maker (still good quality usually) and build a PSU that'll last you years. You would just need to buy some plastic, cut it to size and build your own housing. Acryllic would work well, and you can just glue it. I've thought about doing this and testing it on a bastardised pentium (celeron) based PC.
@demoniack81
@demoniack81 4 года назад
Leakage in diodes has absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with ripple, which is caused by the switching regulation (or just by the input AC waveform in linear supplies). I have to seriously question your "engineering" credentials if you make such a basic mistake. Also you forgot the entire voltage regulation step. The transformer output is completely unregulated and varies wildly depending on the AC input, and needs regulating to get a stable voltage. Computer PSUs are switchmode which means they switch the (regulator) input on and off at very high frequency, as opposed to linear regulators which use basically a variable resistor to pull down the voltage if it floats too high. Linear regulators are more stable but they're horribly inefficient.

This is why GN is my favorite tech channel. Fantastic stuff. I killed a 500 watt Antec PSU back in 2008ish from running a pair of 8800gt's with it. It was then that I started learning about why PSUs matter, and how much is enough.

Fascinating. I never thought about overloading a cable... like adding Y cables to one so 6 devicees are connected to one while I have 2 spare cables and ports that could be used to reduce the load on a single cable. Great info and I look forward to your reviews of power supplies. PS - Just luckily, I just completed my first full Z370 i7-8700K build and got a Corsair PSU and case for it. I hope you make a practice of testing existing PSU's in pre-built PC's and also cheap replacement PSU's to show what they are missing, including cable quality.

I've used JonnyGuru's web site to buy all of my power supplies. The PSU is one thing a person doesn't want to skimp on. With Jonny's help I feel that I got the most stable and clean producing PSUs that I could get. I had almost forgot that he went to work for Corsair. I'll always check out Tagan and Enermax but now feel fairly comfortable that Corsair is likely putting out a decent PSU also.

Rock-n-Roller They don't test the protections and noise, though. The result being things like the EVGA B3. Basically, EVGA sent out review samples to Jonnyguru. The consumer samples were manufactured by RSY instead of SF, had aweful soldering, and had non functional OPP.

So far I've stayed away from re-branded. Its been awhile since I bought a PSU. If I need one I'll start by checking out quality ones. Like say Seasonic. Then look for confirmation that it delivers. I've seen some scary stuff in the build quality of some PSUs. You have to check, though, because even good brands make stinkers some times.

Great Video I actually use JohnnyGuru as my go to for power supply tests when I need a new PSU. That is why I chose the Inwin Desert Fox 800 80+ Gold unit. When he tested the PSU it performed great and also performed way above it's weight as being able to handle way higher power output than what is listed on the spec sheet my unit was tested to about 950 watts and still had 89-90% EFF so it was good to know this before buying the unit and also knwing that if ever the power reaches or surpasses the 800 watts the unit will handle it fine.

That it makes sense that my computer that has an AX 860 power supply from Corsair still is so stable and so little problems with. Since a good power supply makes a good environment for the components to live in. And it may also be the reason why the sound that comes from my PC is so jitter free.

Bit of a failure a temporary desktop. I burned one of the negative wires+the FDD connector due to a Thermaltake "500W" (400W off peak) PSU with unknowingly exposed-in-connector wiring. The PSU entirely stopped working, but the (1993) FDD still works despite its connector being badly burned and melted. The entire system would have been pulling well under 150W total, with most of that on the abnormally strong 5V rail.

I am looking foward to PSU reviews and also better understanding what's happening with those. Since last year, I had a bad times with PSU, it was a first in years. I had a eVGA 650B that died after only 6-7 months of use. The PSU was trying to power up for a fraction of a second than would not have enough to start the PC anymore. So I replaced it with a CX750M from Corsair, but after a 2 months the power supply would take sometime a few seconds to some minutes after pressing the power button to actually power up. I read online that may be caused by low temperature (but the AC in my house is only around 18 oC). I replaced it with a RM 750 i from Corsair and those issues went away. I really would like to understand more how PSU works in different conditions: variation in power from the wall, variation in temperature, how much power it requires to boot a system up. I hope you guys can look at that if you get the time and the knowledge. You always make interesting videos!

I have an R9 290 that does 1250MHz 1.35v and memory at 1650MHz on water. It was beating R9 Fury's and GTX 980s in benches. I was powering it with a 1000w Enermax Triathlor PSU. It melted a total of 4 (separate) PSU PCI-E 8-pin/6-pin connectors, and it's own PCI-E 8-pin/6-pin connectors which eventually started to snap off due to thermal fatigue. I know those connectors can withstand at least 210c. In my case it wasn't the wires that were the weakest point, but the connectors. The 290 was a fun card, but now that I have a 5700 XT my room is on average 6c cooler.

Two decades ago I was definitely on the $25 500w power supply train. With overclocking and tweaking all these years I have figured out its just not worth my time or risk investment to go with a no name brand (or even many well known brands that are just junk). I have never had a problem with corsair power supplies including my favorite cheapo cx430 supplies for friend's and family's budget builds. I had an Antec PSU fail. It took out a R9 290X 8GB, and one of the 2 SATA SSDs I had in RAID 0.

Well, all things aside, I never underestimated the importance of a good PSU in a high-end PC. I was using 80+ Gold Enermax MaxRevo for the last 7~8 years (cant remember the month I bought it), and as I'm upgrading my computer this winter, I got a Seasonic TX-1000 Titanium certified PSU. I could've gone with 850 or even 700 watt titanium certified one, but this is the case when going a bit overkill is OK - who knows what you'll upgrade in 2-3-5 years, what if it's something with the power draw of RTX3090, so it's better to go overspec with that.

Good to see that Gamers Nexus starts to test PSU's, too few reviewers do so while it is an incredibly important component. Something to think about, a good PSU lasts longer than 10 years, spending a bit more on such an important component which powers your entire system and which also often is one of the big contributors to noise in your system is a pretty good idea.

Just had a corsair RM 850x bite the dust after 20 hours of use and it wasn't even under load at the time I was out side.

Great video when you do start the PSU reviews I think would be cool to do video showing how bad the cheep 20 quid ones really are so less people make that mistake 👍

It's funny that the only two PSUs failure that I had were with corsair. And now this guy works there. Despite the failure Corsair sent me back a replacement one but yeah, it makes you wonder about the quality of what's in there. To share my experience one PSU just died like that while the rig was off, but the other one was quite a show. The computer shut down instantly, I was like ok is that a blue screen or what. I turn it back on 5-10sec later I hear a loud POP, pc goes off again and it started to smell burned condensator. PSU was dead but other components were still working strong. The build was not overloading the psu.

Any PSU can die. At least a good PSU will protect other components from dying too.

Awesome content thanks for the work/video! TTL ( Tiny Tom Logan ) on OC3D occasionally does this kind of testing haphazardly. I am interested in more of it though ... and he is right ... about popping power supplies ... you always jump ....

Thanks to Jonny Guru I bought 2011 Corsair AX750 power supply, I read the article at that time: www.jonnyguru.com/modules.php?name=NDReviews&op=Story&reid=236 The AX750 is still strong, just did it with the 8600k@5.3ghz Oc clocking experiment :). So 7 years... it may soon be time to buy something as good as this psu. Great interview and great to see the man himself!

This makes me really curious about what happened to my EVGA 650 GQ, I was playing a game and my PC just turned off and everything that was plugged into the surge protector also turned off, it also tripped the breaker for my room. I then switched the PSU off and back on and I got the magic pop but no smoke or smell.

Got the Prime Ultra Titanium to power the battle station. Most premium PSUs on the market and their the OEM for Corsair's mid and high end power supplies. Seasonic always gets Mythic rating on JonnyGURU.com too. Badass.

EVGA has made some good stuff. I picked a Supernova 1300 G2, after Jonny said it was better than Seasonic.

Peanutbudda hmm it's a good power supply (made by Seasonic) but idk that a 350 dollar gold rated PSU is Better value than 250 dollar 80 plus titanium that is Better in every way. I get you're basically paying extra for that 1300 wattage, but that's a very very, specific use case. I'm running threadripper 1950x OC to 4.8 regularly with a 1080ti OCed custom loop on everything with 12 fans in my caselabs sma8 and don't even come close to utilizing the 1000 watts my psu can push. So my guess is you're running 4 way SLI or a crypto miner. There's no way corsair beats Seasonic for gaming, you get 12 year warranty free rma for 3 years, and best efficiency for the money. Corsair kinda just king of the gold rated PSU.

I didn't know that Seasonic made EVGA PSU's. I definitely didn't pay 350 for it, more like 150.

Switching P/S make so much hash on the DC side that ham radio operators use 50"s tech P/S. Half the A/C wave goes to heat. Look at the ATT D4 channel bank 24 volt P/S from the 50's on an oscilliscope. Pick up a 70 watt amp from the 70"s and a 5 channel x 100 watt music amp from today.

There is no problem in sending power over one pair of wires, which just has to be thick enough. we could do it without the rat's nest of cables. in front of or behind the pcie slots a power rail and you can reduce it down to two plugs. one for the power supply and one for the control and usb supply.
