FUN FACT: NPR named "Once In A Lifetime" one of the most important American Musical works of the 20th Century, and the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame lists it as one of the 500 Greatest Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll.
David Byrne -- musician, song writer, jokester, artist -- the brain behind Talking Heads one of the BEST bands. . .EVER. The band's concert film, "Stop Making Sense," is, for me, the BEST concert film. EVER. Try "Burning Down the House" from that concert film. You'll not stop smiling.
I got to see them in Berkeley for that tour and it’s in my top 5 best concerts of all time (The Beatles being 1st). For the encore they just did BURNING DOWN THE HOUSE again, which made everyone happy cuz when they did it the 1st time it was fantastic.
@@Jonni1027 I got hooked on the band with the first album ("Talking Heads: 77" in 1977) but never got to see them live! Maybe that's why I like the concert film so much. I envy you getting to see them!
Agree with all the above. Also add Nothing But Flowers. Thats their best song IMO. They are an extremely underrated band. David Byrne is a musical genius.
Everything people here tell you about Talking Heads is true. David Byrne is a bonafide genius. STOP MAKING SENSE Concert Film one of the greatest of all time. Brilliant in it's conception and execution. If any concert film was ever a MASTERPIECE, this is it! Songs on this film MUST be viewed in their proper order start to finish in order to get the full experience the way it was intended.✌🍁✌
You think this song was strange in 2020, guess what it was like in 1980?!! The universal reaction was "WTF?!?!?" This album blew my mind! And it spent a lot of time on my turntable..cranked up! This album was another one which they worked with the acclaimed producer Brian Eno, and expanded the band lineup to include some heavy hitters to fill in on instruments. Adrian Belew (Zappa, Bowie, King Crimson) on guitar, Nona Hendrix on backing vocals, and live they brought in Bernie Worrell from Parliament/Funkadelic on keyboards, and Brian Eno playing a little bit of everything. Trivia: the lead singer you saw in the video is David Byrne and he's a Baltimore boy, so us Marylanders are quite proud of that. Talking Heads, the main 4 people, met in art school in Boston and their art school sensibility sure shows on this album. Unlike anything before it. Try listening to "The Great Curve" next. Or go back an album and listen to "Life During Wartime", you might have heard that one before. Thanks for listening to these great bands! Peace from SF
You're right there was alot of wtf in the eighties. There were alot of choices with music and all of it new and fresh. I had a front row seat, GOOD TIMES. Kinda glad it's over because I haven't been right since😐
David Byrne modelled the weird movements after American evangelical pastors and people claiming to have out of body experiences. The channel Polyphonic has a great on it and the origins of the song. definitely worth a watch
I just looked that up, I have this song on my playlist and always thought the video was just random nonsense, and *it* was (pardon the pun 🤭) but it was also deliberately chosen and styled nonsense, this was interesting, thanks ✌🏻
Also the genius album "My Life in the Bush of Ghosts" with Brian Eno sampled evangelical preachers, sufi singers, and African story telling. But that's a whole other kettle of fish...
Talking Heads, Ramones, Blondie, were house bands at CBGB'S in the mid 70s to early 80s they all put their personal stamp on the punk and new wave( post punk) era. Loved them at least for being original and pioneers. Great reaction.
Psst. It's CBGB, not CBGB's. It's an acronym for Country Bluegrass Blues. That was the original intent of the owner, but it turned quickly into a punk venue.
@@karikells You're kind of right. The Talking Heads and Blonde were in the punk crowd, but were more cerebral. The guy that signed them to a label coined the term "new wave" just so he could get these bands played on the radio, since DJs wouldn't play punk.
You gotta remember: Videos were still coming into themselves. Everything and anything was possible. The Talking Heads had a reputation as being very much a performance act. And perform they did! Love this song. Everything from their live album, "Stop Making Sense" is awesome, BTW. Great reaction!
"The same as it ever was ..." "Is this my beautiful house? Is this my beautiful wife?" When you hear somebody say this sort of thing, they're quoting this song. Everybody over forty I guess knows it.
They also had big hits with "And She Was" and "Road to Nowhere." Also, how about some Pat Benatar sometime? "We Belong" and "Invincible" were later hits for her. Everyone likes "Love is a Battlefield," too, but it's a bit played out, lol. You'd get a lot of hits on it, tho.
They were one of the great bands that came when MTV first came out! They call it New Wave Music and I spent many hours watching MTV and getting stoned! Next, listen to "Burning Down The House"!
I really appreciate the fact that the Talking Heads make songs about all kinds of subjects, not only love and relationships like a lot of musicians do. Talking heads is one of my favorite bands of all time! ❤️
Better like and respond before it gets blocked! I remember hearing this for the first time. Unlike anything else being played on the radio at the time. Blew. My. Mind. Impact was greater on me without the video, which is a little distracting. Next try Burning Down The House.
Talking Heads are one of the best Rock Alternative bands of the 80's. David Burn's introduces other third world cultures to Western Society in his music and body gestures. Totally Spiritual.
I remember I was a 9 year old kid when this song was new on MTV, back in the very early 80's...You know it's great song because it still holds up almost 40 years later...Most definitely an 80's Pop classic.
I suggest "Burning Down the House" for your next Talking Heads song. With them, it's usually better to see them instead of just hearing them, so I suggest the official video, or if not that, then a live performance.
You will LOVE all their videos! They were art students before they started a band, so the videos reflect their unique music. Suggestions: “Stay Up Late” “And She Was” “Wild Wild Life” “Road To Nowhere “ “Love For Sale”
Love this sort of insane art. This is what "The Talking Heads" do. Check out their other songs, and you'll see. I think they all escaped from the mental institution. I see they made you smile.
O gosh, it’s been so fun watching you gather in the experience of the. 80s and 90s music and videos. There are great things about every era of music, but the 80s especially was something all its own.... the invention of more electronic recording and instrument options along with MTV and it brought a different approach.
The first time I heard this song was during the opening scene of "Down And Out In Beverly Hills". That version was from their Live Concert film "Stop Making Sense". Truly intriguing...
Wow! Loved the Talking Heads, a group that performed (back in the 70's) at punk places like Max's Kansas City in New York. I went to a job interview once and a friend, who knew the owner of the company, said that he was a Talking Heads fan. So, when I walked into the boss's office, he extended his hand to shake. I presented my arm and did the Talking Heads arm chop move. I'd like to think my experience had something to do with my being hired, but I know he was impressed with my being a fellow Talking Heads fan. Try to watch the video of their "Stop Making Sense" concert. It's amazing!
The first Talking Heads song I heard and first time I was even made aware of them was the video for Burning Down The House, watched it around 1983 possibly 1984 and it was among the earliest MTV videos I can recall watching, I wasn't aware of Once In A Lifetime which was released in 1980 until maybe 1989, MTV is known for playing a video a lot for 6 months then never playing it again. My girlfriend who is older than I am watched MTV the day it came out and she told me how much she loved this song and video and she loved the quirkiness that the singer David Byrne was displaying, the fact that he wasn't trying to look cool or badass or whatever that most people do in their videos, the fact that he was confident enough to let his geekiness, nerdiness, dorkiness, spaziness, whatever you want to call it to come forth for the world to see. The funny thing that she and I laugh about is that she said her mom was seriously disturbed by his actions in this video (her mom is pretty judgemental) and had to leave the room if the video came on, it really bothered her. I joked that David probably reminded her of some geek that tried asking her on a date in high school or stalked her and she never recovered that someone "beneath her" would dare to show an interest in her. David is actually really smart and has written a book on how the music industry works, detailing what you can expect when you're signed to a label, what you can expect in payment when you sell an album (about $1.30 depending on your negotiation) how much more you can expect if your listed as a writer on a song (about $0.09 per song) ,how often you get a royalty check for albums sold (twice a year) how much it costs to record an album, why you shouldn't be so excited when you're given a million dollars when you first sign to a record label because that money is given to be used to pay for recording studio time and is not intended for you to buy drugs, Ferraris and hookers AND the record company is going to want you to pay that money back. Just really informative things in case you're thinking of getting into the music business, written by someone who went through it. David is also one of those few celebrities that I would actually like to sit down with and talk about things that have nothing to do with their profession, things like, science, history, the universe, the possibility of life amongst the stars. Other celebs that come to mind for this are Dan Aykroyd and Marilyn Manson.
Watch the concert film Stop Making Sense. We Gen Xers all danced in the aisles at the movie theater. This band was key alternative 80s. They are legends. They formed the band when they were art students as RISD. So talented.
Talking Heads - Big Country and you will absolutely not regret Tina Weymouth's offshoot band Tom Tom Club and their seminal hit, Genius of Love! Oupsy Bobba Zeeba!
I know a bunch of people who take Talking Heads deathly seriously and like... yeah I totally agree they're 'important' songs but it's great to see someone just smiling and laughing at this song because it is also just a great time and should be enjoyed to the max :D
Oh yeah, I love this song - thrashed it in the 80s and hearing it again just now and watching David Byrne in action just made my day. So many great songs ... The Lady Don't Mind, Burning Down The House, Wild Wild Life, This Must Be The Place... so many others :) Enjoy!
LUV IT!! Great song about growing older & wondering if u made the right decisions~David Byrne( lead singer) was a NYC performance artist whose b4 their time grooves we just LOVED! 🤘💃
the director Spike Lee has filmed the most recent David Byrne concert (lead singer for the Talking Heads) and it is airing for "one day only" on HBO this saturday, the 17th of October. you can also check it out via Amazon on the same day. hopefully it'll go on sale after that. this dude used to work with Bernie Worell from P-Funk, and has been an inspiration for decades. thanks for doing this video, man!
OMG I laughed so hard I got rice up my nose, because I’m eating dinner! 😂 I’m watching for the 2nd time now. I knew you were a bit hesitant to listen to more Talking Heads, but you took a chance because we bugged you so much, and I’m grateful! Thank you! I love this band so much. They have some hits that are more accessible, too, like “Burning Down the House.” But I love them at their weirdest, too! Their concert film “Stop Making Sense” is considered by many to be the greatest concert film of all time. The way it builds from a simple beginning is incredible. I once met David Byrne, very briefly, and he has the most intense eyes I’ve ever seen. He has a new Broadway show coming out on HBO next week (“American Utopia”), and I’m so excited I can hardly stand it! You can find clips on here from a recent SNL performance he did that previews the show. Btw, the live version of this song, Once in a Lifetime (from Stop Making Sense) is even better! And here are some other Talking Heads recommendations: Burning Down the House Stay Up Late Road to Nowhere Slippery People And She Was Girlfriend Is Better Heaven The Lady Don't Mind Life During Wartime Making Flippy Floppy Pull Up the Roots THANKS AGAIN! 💕 P.S. I forgot to add that David Byrne is a big fan of Brazilian music and has put out some excellent compilation CDs that introduced new audiences to so many artists! Check out Umbabarauma by Jorge Ben - it’s a football (soccer) song! You will LOVE it. Phenomenal rhythm. I couldn’t stop listening to it when I first heard it and I still listen to it frequently!
This was one of the very early MTV videos. I was already a hunger Talking Heads fan from the late 70s. David Byrne was (still is) one of the most innovative, creative, and interpretive talents from the early New Wave movement. For a special treat, watch their “Life During Wartime” performance live from their 1984 Stop Making Sense tour (I was there!), movie, directed by Jonathan Demme (Silence of the Lambs). Absolutely brilliant performance by the entire band. Whoa!
One of the coolest concerts i ever saw. Watch Talking Heads "Stop Making Sense" in their 1984 concert. You will enjoy their live performance much more than this video. Always use this concert as the go to for any talking heads reviews.
They were an art school band, that's where they all met. Their visuals were heavily influenced by surrealism and the Dadaists, a group of artists from the 1920's. You might want to check out their concert film "Stop Making Sense" - very interesting and different!
Studio: Wild Wild Life, Burning Down the House, (Nothing But) Flowers, And She Was, Take Me to the River Stop Making Sense: Girlfriend Is Better, Life During Wartime, Psycho Killer (yes, again, trust me on this one), What a Day That Was It is *very* difficult to go wrong with these guys.
Talking Heads were amazing - and band members husband-and-wife team Tina Weymouth and Chris Frantz had another band called the Tom Tom Club -check out their fun and amazing song Genius of Love (lots of artists sampled portions of the song)
The Talking Heads album 'Stop Making Sense' along with a select few others got me through the cultural hellscape of the '80's. A true classic, no exaggeration. The video is sublime, starting with just David Byrne,a guitar and a tape player and building up bit by bit - joined next by Tina Weymouth then the rest of the band appear.along with the most athletic backing singers ever - all building up to the crescendo - 'Girlfriend Is Better' and THAT big bloody suit. Incredible.
"Stop Making Sense" concert from "Talking Heads"! You need to see it JayveeTV. Or react to parts of it. Everyone should see it. Most fun concert ever. They show all their talents there. Excellent musicians, absolutely cult and funny.
Glad you enjoyed it. Talking Heads were one of the great alternative sounding bands of the eighties. They deserve to be respected in the same way as the likes of The Smiths and The Cure.
Love the song and what a video! So odd, but that is the great part of it. Anything from the DVD Live show "Stop Making Sense" is gold. Some have rated that music concert video in the TOP 5, best ever.
Dude this is probably their best known song. Groundbreaking for sure. but they have so many great songs. Pleez try 'Girlfriend Better' or 'Burning Down the House'.
Awesome! It's really good to see this song (and this video) is still confusing people 40 years later! "There is water at the bottom of the ocean"! Remain In Light -- the album this song comes from -- is really good too! "Born Under Punches", "Crosseyed and Painless", "The Great Curve" and more!
