We don’t need more language textbooks, with limited language content, drills and explanations. We just need each other to talk about what interests us, record it, transcribe it and offer it to learners of our language.

I always have the same short conversations, in specific situations of my day by day life in my native language (Spanish), like when I go to the market to buy my groceries, when I take a taxi, when I choose the meal in a restaurant, protocols in places like the airport, and so on. Every day the same conventions and chunks. I believe that if someone made short videos about his/her high frequently interactions in a normal week it would be great helpful for people learning that language, especially beginners and tourist (on student books you always see the extremely formal way to the the things and not real people in real life interactions)

Exactly, listening to the language more and more is the only way. Using LingQ doesn't seem so easy as I thought it would be but hopefully I can get the hang of it and make use of its courses like the one you mentioned.

I really enjoy your broadcasts, Steve. I've made a RU-vid collection of you interviewing your French guests in French. I play them again and again. As you say it is the language going over the brain and I've learnt so much from you and your fellow polyglots. I've also become a fan of Stephen Krashen and a firm believer in Comprehensive Input.. French is the first language that I've language I learned other than English and I'm at an Intermediate Level with it, I have been doing it for two years. I started it after I spent five months of speech therapy, 3 hours a day recovering from a stroke that nearly killed me so I could go back to teaching full time. I'm a high school teacher of history and geography. Thanks for all the work you've done with people learning languages.

Hi Steve, these are good points, thanks. And with the transcriptions, I have found that upper intermediate students of a language can to some extent punctuate the text as well. In fact, it is good practice to listen to the intonation to indicate ends of sentences. I have done that with some of my Spanish lessons (in LingQ) if I have time. A very Merry Christmas to you too, and a blessed new year. Regards from South Africa.

This sounds a lot like what's happening on the "Dreaming Spanish" RU-vid Channel and a few other channels are popping up like it too. Cool stuff! I first heard about this from the AUA school in Bangkok, Thailand and went more in depth on the subject by reading the book "From the Outside In" by Dr. J. Marvin Brown. How they have named it is "crosstalk" so that it's not confused with "language exchange" haha

@Thelinguist

I will do so. The best is if you just speak and transcribe afterwards, but you can also write it first and then record. Either way works. Check out what we have. To add content, just make sure you have the mp3 file, and the text, and hopefully a picture or graphic of some kind. Then click on Import in the top right hand corner and follow instructions. Once you import the lesson, if there are no copyright issues, you can share the lesson.

As an enjoyment learner who can always go back to improve on languages of the past, I still don't see what the problem is with doing what Lindie does, which is focusing on a couple of languages for a few months and then switch and do the same for the next set, instead of focusing on like 2 for several months or a year on end which is how you miss out. Sorry to say this Steve but we're not getting any younger, so is setting yourself up to feel the regret of lost chances really a good Idea? Lindie also says we should have other activities besides language learning to really have engaging conversations which I completely agree with, but something tells me you barely have anything significant in life worth sharing if all your interactions with native speakers are one-off and never see them again. Very surprising coming from a pensioner to have so few social connections in life

Good morning Steve, I love your videos! I have a question for you, I think it's probably a stupid one however I often ask myself when you say you notice when they use formal speech versus informal that you just listen to hear the differences in conversation but you don't look up grammar. How do you know the difference then how are you able to recognize the differences? Maybe this is with experience of the many languages you have acquired? Thank's for your point of view on learning languages, it always reassures me in one way or another when I feel frustrated.
@Thelinguist
@Thelinguist 3 года назад
You get used to certain patterns, and at some point you read about these patterns in a grammar book. At that point, these explanations are no longer predicting what you will experience in the language, and therefore they are easier to understand and remember because they refer to things you have already experienced, but may not have noticed.
@annettemcnabb5856
@annettemcnabb5856 3 года назад
@@Thelinguist hmm, so you are saying that you first acquire the language and then you put in the grammar? I have done this backward, I have been taking courses in french which is grammar-based /related to life, from travel to everyday stuff, but the focus is on grammar no attention to speaking the language at all. I have not developed my speaking ability because of this and had hoped it would happen in the process of learning. This year I am changing my approach to no more courses, only focussing on listening and speaking. The speaking is a problem because I have no one to practice with but I am in the process of finding a tutor.
