Larry Bobka is one of the most experienced and knowledgeable club fitters and club builders in the golf industry today, and we are lucky to have added him to our 2nd Swing staff earlier this year. Bobka has worked for companies like Titleist and Wilson in his career, and he has worked with some of the best players in the world to help them fine tune their equipment, including #Tiger Woods. You can read more about Larry Bobka in the October 24 edition of our At The Turn newsletter (www.2ndswing.com/t-at-the-tur...) and you can expect to see him featured in more videos that we’ll be doing on our RU-vid channel. One area of immense expertise for Bobka is #putters, and in this video he discusses #toehang, what it is, and its importance with 2nd Swing staff writer Drew Mahowald.
You can find more information about putter fitting at 2nd Swing at fitting.2ndswing.com/.

Great stuff ! I had the Ping putter app installed on a used iPod which I bought on eBay, it worked for about 1-2 hours then broke. (I got a full refund). When it worked it gave me an approx + 8 (strong arc) reading. Ive had an Evnroll ER2 in my bag for nearly 3 years now, and I love that putter. Over the summer i sent it to stability shaft and they installed their stability shaft and claimed they gave me 44 deg of toe hang (@3 deg flat @ 67 deg.). They told me thats the most amount of toe hang they could give me at 3 deg. Flat. OEM is 22 degrees. I just measured it with a level app on my iPhone and confirmed it again as 25 Deg. This year I had my best putting year ever, over 20 rounds and my ARCCOS stats show 29.5 putts/round, 1.7 per hole and 1.9 per GIR and 1 putt % of 30.3% all on a public course . Clearly not PGA course conditions, but very proud i got my average below 30 per round. My question is this: Considering i have a +8 strong arc stroke, is 25 deg,. Of toe hang enough ? By my stats it appears it does but I’m always searching for a better putter/stroke. Regards, Stephen

Hi Stephen. Thanks for following our channel. Based on your putting stats it sounds like you are a great putter! We are always searching for ways to be even better no matter the endeavor. 29.5 putts per round average on public greens is very good! Something to be very proud of. The best putters on the PGA Tour players average just under 28 on high quality surfaces. Keep in mind certain stats can be a little misleading. For example if you miss a lot of greens but chip it close you are going to have a good putts per round average, If you hit a lot of greens your putts per round average will be higher. The simple answer is if its working I wouldn't play with it. Usually during a putting fitting I will explain that you fit into a certain toe hang putter but at the end of the day you want to look down at something that inspires confidence. I do like that your current putter at least has some toe hang. If you are considered fitting into a strong arc putter but use a straight arc putter with no toe hang I will be having a conversation about your miss tendencies. A question for you is do you have a consistent miss when you do miss? If so you may want to consider a putter that has more toe hang to get that putter releasing better to get the ball rolling straight . Based on your stats that you presented I'm going to assume you don't miss many short putts and I would say don't mess with what works! I consider myself a very good putter and my stats are not as good as yours. Hope this helps.

Thomas Campbell awesome reply and thanks ! I don’t have a miss to either side of the hole, so you’re right, let me not mess with it ! As the old expression goes “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it “!

The putter lie angle to match each golfer's stance/ swing arc is important. See Sydney golf tech's YT videos.

The only way to have a straight back straight through putting stroke would be to close the face going back and open it coming through otherwise all strokes would have arc to varying degrees. With that being the case instead of saying a player has a strong arc and needs more toe hang wouldn't it be a better message to portray toe hang much like draw and fade bias of a driver with movable weights? The more toe hang the slower the toe wants to rotate like a fade bias so just because a golfer has arc doesn't mean they need toe hang. Wouldn't the proper indication be if that golfer is consistently missing left or right and then use toe hang to slow down or speed up the rate of rotation of the putter head to encourage a square strike?

This is an excellent point. This video doesn't actually explain WHY putters have different toe hang. What you said is correct. It has nothing to do with your arc. It has to do with you squaring the face at impact. All strokes have arc. If you have trouble squaring the putter at impact, try to understand why you miss. Assuming you are a right-handed putter, if you miss LEFT most often, chances are you are OVER-rotating the putter at impact (i.e the face is closed). It might be helpful for you to have a putter with a lot of toe hang (more weight in the toe) because it will slow that rotation and you'd have a better chance at returning the putter face square. Conversely, if you tend to miss RIGHT (i.e. you push the ball and leave the putter face open), try a putter that is more face-balanced. This will have a lighter toe and allow you to square the face up at impact.

@@NapCFA another interesting fitting fact that I recently found in a ping study is the effect of a straight vs pistol grip. Pistol grips promoted a more closed face at impact across all test groups so if you miss one direction maybe rather than using toe hang to influence miss you could use grip type or a combination of grip type and toe hang when selecting a new putter.

Couldn’t agree more. I just got fitted for a new putter. I thought I always had a straight back straight through putting stroke. But come to find out I actually have more of a cut putting stroke (out to in stroke). My fitter said that I need some toe hang because of this and because I believe I have a closed face when I address the ball. Does this sound right? The extra weight in the toe will create me hit it more square rather than being to closed on contact? I’ve heard so many people say you need a toe hang when you have an arch but people forget to mention if you have an out to in stroke like myself.

@@NapCFA Face Balanced Putters STAY Square to Path. Toe Flow/Hang Putters Close to Path in the Backswing and Open to Path in the Forward Swing. This SLOWS Face Rotation because of the INERTIA of the Toe Biased Weight. As for Grip Thickness, Thicker diminishes Toe Flow/Hang effectively making the Putter closer to Face Balanced. Thinner enhances T F/H. If the Predominant "MISS" is to the Push side LESS T F/H. A Pull "MISS" wants MORE TF/H. This is taking into account an Accurately Aimed Putt and a decently delivered Stroke to the Ball.
